The four main classifications of the illicit drugs are stimulants, depressants, narcotics, and hallucinogens. Stimulants are a type of drug that you can get sold off of the street that makes a person alert at all times and energetic. Depressants are a type of drug that makes a person calm down, normally given to one when they have anxiety problems. Narcotics are a type of drug that is normally prescribed to a person when they need treatment but that individual can be addicted to it just because of the relief it gives. Hallucinogens are a type of drug that causes a person to see things that aren't really there. In this essay I will be writing about these four illicit drugs: stimulants, depressants, narcotics, and hallucinogens.

If you have been working in EMS for longer than a week you will probably already know the epidemic that America is facing. The epidemic that I am referring to has no discrimination and anyone can fall victim to it. If it hasn't already destroyed your family in some way then you are one of the lucky few.

Opiates are only one of many substances used in North America for recreational purposes. Opiates compromise a class of drugs used for dealing with pain. Opiates are made from opium which is derived from the poppy plant. Such examples include codeine, morphine, and heroin. Many people use opiates for multiple reasons such as recreation, medication, and personal escape. This essay will consider how economic stability, cultural groups, stress among youth, and accessibility contribute to trends in the recreational use and abuse of opiates.

The toxic stimulant called methamphetamine is one of the most commonly used illicit drugs in pregnancy. The drug’s noxious make-up can have terrible consequences when taken during pregnancy. Unbeknownst to the everyday individual, there is a raging issue going on within our nation that involves the rising surge of narcotic misuse and overdose. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), from 1999 to 2014, more than 165,000 people have died in the United States from overdoses related to prescription opioids. In 2014, almost 2 billion people either abused or overdosed on prescription opioids, and of which 14,000 were fatal. Today, the heartbreaking statistics indicate to us that at least half of all overdose deaths involve a prescription opioid. (CDC, 2016) Thus, this information leads us all to wonder where these addictions are sparked and where the prescriptions are being administered. One extremely popular route, involves our Emergency Departments (ED) all across the nation. For the remainder of this paper, we will discuss the clinical portion of this issue, and the interventions that all medical professionals can put into place to help lower the numbers of these statistics.

I have always wondered why people want to distort the view or perception of reality and live partially or perhaps fully in a world that we all know is unreality. Even though we may try to escape the situation or problem that we are currently facing, it is not going to go away unless we do something about. I do not understand why people are trying or want to lose their senses of reality. I question why do people take hallucinogenic drugs and what are things that they see or how do they feel when on the hallucinogenic drugs?
