Norma’s milk around for her. I found her in the kitchen with the tea brewing. “Would you like a cup?” she said when I handed her the milk. “Yes, I’d love a cup,” I replied. We both sat at the dining room table to drink it and she started to talk. “I’m sorry if I haven’t seemed neighborly in the past, I tend to keep away from other people for various reasons,” said Norma. “That’s OK, there’s no apology needed. You’ve always been polite to me whether we’ve talked or not and you’re a quiet neighbor. There’s something to be said for that,” I replied with a laugh. She laughed as well. She took a sip of her tea and I found myself staring at her eyes, and then suddenly realized what I was doing.

I just noticed your eyes, and how striking they are,” I said. I think that embarrassed her, so I quickly changed the subject. “So tell me Norma, what do you do for a living?” “I actually don’t have a job at the moment.
What do you do?” “I work for the stock exchange and am finding it hard work. I’ve only been there for six months though, fresh out of college,” I replied. “That’s interesting, are you any good at
“A commissary!” the matron was struck breathless when Lizabeth asked this. She had decided that Lizabeth was not normal. She had seemed too stupid to defend herself in court. “She must be interested in food!” the matron had decided to herself.
There are many different ways to save money and there are different things to save for. A savings plan for an immediate want is apparently different than a savings strategy for retirement. One may choose to select stocks, bonds, or mutual funds for a savings strategy, however, my personal choice is to invest in bonds first, then mutual funds.
I open it and jump a little when I see an elderly woman with a teenager. The woman is holding a plate of muffins and the boy is holding some flowers. “Hello.” They say in sync. “Welcome to the neighborhood, I’m Edna, and this is my grandson Ethan” The boys brushes the bangs out of his eyes and extends his hand, which I shake politely. “Maybe we could hang out sometime.” Ethan said staring at the ground. Edna smacked the back of his head. “C’mon Ethan. She just moved here. Help the poor girl unpack!” She said demandingly. I had no clue what to do so I just led him inside. He helped me unpack my boxes and put my clothes away. We hooked up my television set and watched Judge Judy for
Her eyes were at once roguish and innocent. Ueffqo I tried to repeat the name and failed, rather predictably; phonology isn't my strong suit. I tried aligning the sound with the New England glottal stop that I was much more familiar with, and had more success. There was then a moment of silence, and, attempting to interject something to fill it, I asked, "And your employer's name--?" "Will be made known to you when it becomes appropriate," she said, and I was surprised to hear the slightest note of asperity in her voice. Apparently I had overstepped some boundary by asking. "My apologies," I said. L'lana made no verbal response to this, but the level, expectant gaze she now aimed at me I found even more disconcerting. "I assume you know my name," I said, "since you --" "--sought you out," she finished. "Indeed we did, it being of vital importance that everyone associated with this undertaking be of the Old Blood. We were extremely gratified to learn that one of the last of the Carters still lived." A thought suddenly and obviously struck her; she opened her pocketbook, the while exclaiming "Excuse me; I meant no offense. Obviously custom and formality must be observed." L'lana continued to root in her pocket book as she spoke, and after another few moments she pulled something triumphantly from its innards. It was a crumpled wad of paper, clasped tight in her fist, which she extended to
He then apologized to us for the delusional woman having came into the diner ruining our lunch. Then, asked us to pay her no mind, telling us that, Caroline Hemstock was just a harmless, old woman who was suffering from some form of Alzheimer’s or schizophrenia, or some other type of neurological disease, as he had put it. He then mentioned that Caroline could no-longer distinguish between reality and the old myths and wives tales that the village was known for. He then offered to pay for our lunches, to which my mama—finally no longer being taciturn—said, “Oh, that’s very kind of you, but it wasn’t any of your fault what happened. Your business shouldn’t suffer because of what someone else did. Besides, the old woman didn’t harm anyone, we’re just fine.” The large man then smiled warmly at me first then at my mama before saying, “That’s very kind of you. You two be sure to let me know if you needed anything else then.” he then turned around and headed back to the kitchen. After that my mama promptly paid for our food and we left even though we hadn’t yet finished our meals. Neither one of us felt much like eating any longer anyways
About a month after the loss of her husband, Audrey decided to return to the ranks of the employed. Still encumbered by her cast, she asked her son, Jim, to assist with a job search. In addition to a willingness to facilitate her search, Jim responded with a summation of her challenge and an inquiry into her plans. “You haven’t been a practicing beautician since leaving South Dakota and you haven’t even been employed since working in the shipyards during the war. What are you qualified to do? What kind of job are you looking for?”
On 6/3/15 worker made an unannounced visit to the residence of Ms. Gertrude Carter, for the purpose of assessing her home environment. When worker arrived, Ms. Gertrude Carter and Floyd Carter greeted her. They welcomed worker into the home. Once inside Ms. Victoria Carter was picking up things off the couch so worker could sit down. Victoria, Gertrude, and Floyd had been to town and purchased Floyd a backpack and Victoria a new purse. They both appeared happy with this purchase. Victoria Carter refused to talk with worker and stated, "The hospital said everyone should just leave me alone." When worker asked Ms. Victoria Carter for Floyd and her SS # she became very agitated and refused."
Roderick Cross stared blankly across the counter at the jovial woman. She was old, comfortable in her spot; it was the kind of woman who had worked at the same place for her whole life, and couldn't fathom doing anything else. At some point along the way, what was supposed to be a fake smile donned by those in the service industry had been replaced with a real one. Roderick wasn't sure whether to pity the woman, or be jealous that she had managed to keep the same job for so long without going crazy.
“Sir, several weeks ago, my wife accused me of being insensitive and gave me a stack of books to read. Therefore, when I approached Mrs. Morrison, I politely asked her if she was ready.”
Two people, from completely different lives, began a journey through life on the day of their college graduation. Although Emma knew Dexter because of classes they shared, through an amusing act of fate, Dexter met Emma for the first time on that night. Left stranded at the graduation, Emma needed a ride home and Dexter was more than willing to help her. He drove her home and was invited into her appartment. Emma really liked Dexter so, to no surprise, her nerves got the best of her. After excusing herself, for a chance to calm down in private, Emma returned only to discover that him was about to leave. She came to the realization that him was a playboy and proclaimed, “I’ sorry, but I’m not good at this”. Following suit, he replied,
A new nurse arrives after a couple minutes pass. She opens the door and enters the room, shutting the door behind her loudly. “Hello, Alice. I’m nurse Cherry.” She smiles a bit and sits next to Alice cautiously. Nurse Cherry’s the exact opposite of nurse Goody. She’s tall and slim, with long dirty blonde hair that’s natural other than the products she puts in it. She has beautiful fair skin with a slight tan and light brown eyes. Her lipstick is just like her name; cherry red, and she wears the color with pride. Alice looks at the new nurse and plays with the bandages on her arms. Nurse Cherry quickly takes notice and clears her throat to get the young 16-year-old girl to stop, which she does. “So,” The nurse starts, her voice deep yet smooth, “I’m going to ask you a series of questions and I want you to answer with complete honesty.” Alice again nods and waits for the questions. The nurse starts asking about things drug, alcohol, and diet related to which Alice answered them all with a bored tone of voice. After the bland Q-and-A was over and done with Nurse Cherry left, her heels loudly clacking on the
An hour after the moving van parked in the driveway of 406 Clybourne street in Clybourne Park the younger family waved at the van when it slowly moved away and they went inside when the van was out of view. The family worked together to put away their belongings and they stood hand and hand and they took a breath of fresh air. Beneatha went first to her room to put away her stuff then Ruth and Walter went next and Travis left to go hunt for his new room. They all left until Mama was left there alone looking out the big window. Mama gingerly stepped to the window and put her plant down smiling in thought. When the door bell rung she jumped and went to the door. At the door was a white woman and when the door opened and saw mama she flinched and said “Hello, I’m your neighbor it’s nice to meet you.” She said “I’m Susan it’s nice to meet you.” She said this slowly, deliberately like she’s talking to a foreign person and Susan put out her hand and mama did not reach for it her face was just a blank stare. Then after a while mama stammered “h-hello I’m Lena Younger its very nice to meet you.” And she reached out and shook Susan’s hand and Susan quickly took it away. Then she said “Well I just came to say,” Susan took mama’s shirt and pulled her face so close to mama’s that their noses were touching. “stay out of our way, we will stay out of your way if you stay out of ours.” She shoved mama into their brand new house and slammed the door so hard that
“Sorry about that, have a good day,” Amaru told the lady as she was walking away. "Whatever," the women spat. Amaru then dialed someone else to come down and take care of the rest of the people in line. Soon enough one of her co coworkers came down and started on the next customers. “Thank you, I'll be right back,” Amaru said to her coworker Sandrah. Amaru then went to go find rasta, after looking basically throughout the whole store she finally found him. He was in one of the cleaning closets in the back, pacing back and forth. “You okay?” Amaru hesitated, Rasta turned around and gazed at Amaru with teary eyes ‘Amaru that lady was so mean, why would that lady think it's okay to talk to not just me, but anyone in that way?” oh Amaru, that just not right. Rasta said now crying in Amaru Skinny arms. “Amaru, if we are going to start this babysitting business, we need to start it now! I can't take much more of this. He finally said through his tears. Amaru was shocked to hear rasta say this. At one point, That's all Amaru would ever talk about is her future babysitting business, Rasta would just laugh it off. "You're right! I just need you to
It’s a nice, sunny, afternoon after an enduring day at work. She sits in the black, mesh, rolling chair at the desk where she wraps up her unfinished assignments. Still completely dressed up as if ready for a job interview, she sits up straight and prepares for the stream of questions I have fabricated. As I question her, she answers in a formal manner, just like when she prepares for job interviews by speaking to a mirror.
Its 9:30pm; Jean and I are driving down the street. “OH my! I hope we make it to the gas station.” It’s really dark and very hard to see down this road. Two miles down the road we reach a local gas station in a far off city. I get out of the car and turn to Jean. “Okay you can pump the gas; and I will go inside to pay.” I asked if she needed anything she replied, yes and asked could I bring her a soda and a bag of chips. It was very windy and cold out and by the way Jean looked I just knew she did not feel comfortable being out at this gas station. I rushed inside the gas station to fill it up . The clerk greeted me when I walked in, and ask how he could help me tonight. The clerk was very tall, with a raspy voice, with not much I’m going to put $20 in the gas tank.
