A stonemason has his own set of tools that he uses to complete any form of stonework. But this does not mean that Freemasons do not have tools of their own. Just because they do not lay bricks or work on stone inside their lodges does not mean that they do not need anything else. In fact, aside from the different Mason regalia used in rituals, there are also tools associated with each degree that a Mason lands on.

• 24-inch Gauge
A gauge (or a ruler) is used to measure the hours of each day. At this degree, Masons are taught to divide their day into three, spending 3 hours on sleep or refreshment, 8 hours on the service of God and others in need, and 8 hours on work and the usual vocations.

It also shows that every Masonic brother shares the same goal and will be judged by the same laws.
• Plumb
Also called as a plumb line (for stonemasons), it reminds Masons to stay just, honest and upright.

• Trowel
The trowel symbolizes the need to spread brotherly love, with the theoretical cement it is spreading symbolizing the strong unity or bond among brothers.
• Pencil
Although the pencil seems to be a common tool in an actual stonemason’s job, in Freemasonry, it symbolizes how God has everything that people do written down. On the judgment day, this list will be consulted and will be the basis for how one will be judged.
• Skirrit
The skirrit, in stonework, is used to draw a perfect line on the ground. In Freemasonry, it is a reminder to stick to the goal of perfection that the brotherhood has set.
• Compass
The compasses are among the most popular symbols of Freemasonry, and also proves to be one of the most important tools. It reminds Freemasons to know the limits between good and evil based on the rules of the Great Architect of the Universe.
Seeing how these tools help in every degree of Freemasonry, it is no wonder that they are also among the most common symbols that appear on important Masonic
The staff, which is fashioned from a maple branch by the guide, can be interpreted as a symbolic link. This link connects the dark, inner forces (the id) with the higher, rational forces that govern our benevolence (the superego). When Goodman Brown states that he will go no further, the
The symbolism behind the stones is clear; they are not only murder weapons, but the first tools ever made by men were made of stone, which denote the savage and violent customs of ancestors.
When doing magic you can draw them in sand, on paper you can stitch them onto charm bags, and any other way you can think of to incorporate them into your workings. Some of the hex signs were geometric, colorful designs that were used in order to ward off witches and curses. Some of the geometric designs have different meanings all together.
Bill Mize, my great grandfather, watched in awe everyday as his father did the difficult job of being a railroad conductor in the 1940s. “I was completely fascinated by my father, he worked tirelessly to provide for the family, and was an incredible man,” Bill recalls. At the young age of fourteen Bill suffered the devastating loss of his father, the man he spent most of his childhood admiring. His father died abruptly of tuberculosis at the age of fifty-nine the family was completely shocked and devastated by this loss. Without his father, Bill watched everything in his once normal life quickly fall away; the family’s finances were slim to nothing and his mother could no longer support Bill and his sisters. Throughout the extremely rough time following his father’s death, Bill was forced to make some difficult decisions that no fourteen year old should have to make. Bill had to make the impossible decision to leave the rest of his family so that they would not starve, and move into a home for the children of Freemasons.
What do they have to do with the dollar bill? The number thirteen was, in theory, an important number to the masons, “There were 13 original colonies, 13 colonies signed on for independence, there are 13 stars above the eagle, there are 13 steps on the pyramid, there are 13 letters in the Latin phrase ANNUIT COEPTIS, there are 13 stripes on the U.S. flag and eagles shield, there are 13 olive branches (each olive branch has 13 pieces of fruit attached to it), and there are 13 arrows(4).” Thirteen can be seen all over the dollar bill and in our history. The back of the dollar has the U.S. seal. on the back of the seal there is an unfinished pyramid with an eye in a triangle floating over the top. The eye is also known as the eye of providence or lucifers eye(2). The three sides of this eye are the antichrist, the beast, and the false prophet(2). This eye is a masonic symbol as
Nathaniel Hawthorne also uses different objects in the story as symbols. One of these is the staff of Satan. Hawthorne describes the staff as bearing the “likeness of a great black snake” (318). This eludes the cane as being symbolic of the serpent in the Bible that corrupts Adam and Eve. This could also show the reader the evil that is involved with the devil character because the serpent is believed to be a model of the devil.

Relations between Grand Lodges (bodies that govern masons) are determined by the concept of recognition. All the Grand Lodges keep a record of other Grand Lodges that they identify. In cases where two Grand Lodges recognize and are in Masonic communication with each other, the two are said to be in peace (Harwood, pg 40). Some of the other functions as seen from Poe’s story include exclusive jurisdiction and regularity. Exclusive jurisdiction is a theory whereby just one Grand Lodge will be recognized in any area. If jurisdiction in one area is claimed by two Lodges, the other grand lodges choose between them and may all not choose to identify the same one. This can be ignored when the two overlapping Grand Lodges are in harmony and consent to share power. On the other hand, regularity perception in freemason is based on devotion to Masonic signs, the necessary membership requirements, beliefs and rites of the
Early Christians in the Roman Empire had symbols that other Christians could identify. This later led to more symbolic than literal at face value meanings. I would say that Secret Societies that exist today built from traditions of Templars took much of this Iconography and added their own meanings to them. Masons built many of the Cathedrals of Europe and Templars joined the Masons once the Catholic Church denounced them. Sir Francis Bacon learning of America through tales of Templars is said to have wrote many of the degrees of Freemasonry which were built upon Christian morality.
As Mr. Brown goes deeper in the forest with the Devil, he notices his staff which resembles a serpent. This is obviously a literary allegory to the story of Adam and Eve in the bible in which a serpent, the most slyest and keen of all animals, convinces Eve to eat from the tree of knowledge. This seems like a symbol where later on in the story, When Mr. Brown is deeper in the forest, he learns things about the people in the town that he never knew, nor did he want to know.
The hands are folded at the chest resembling that he is laid to rest. The objects in his hands must represent the tools he needs in the afterlife. One of the tools looks like a striped cane and the other looks like it has three tassels almost like it’s used for whipping as if it were a weapon. It also seems that he is grasping the tools and holding
This was the most prestigious level of a stonemason. In a construction project, stone masons would be responsible for cutting stones and placing them into the correct slot. Although it seemed like a simple job, it required much skill to complete it well. They also sometimes had to make complex decorations on the stone which required tremendous skill. The money that the stonemason received was based off of the number of blocks he completed. To differentiate between stonemasons, each mason would carve his own unique symbol onto each block of stone. These stonemason were well respected because of the important role they played in building cathedrals and churches. In addition to stonemasons, there were also many other jobs that people performed, such as a master mortar maker, carpenter, blacksmith, sculptor, and more (“Medieval Cathedrals”). Without these jobs, these cathedrals could not have been completed. They were equally as important and required cooperation, such as the master mortar mason creating and applying mortar in between stones that the master stonemason made to make sure they were stable and
