The Story of an hour vs.The Interlopers:
“The Story of an hour” and “The Interlopers” are quite different but have some similarities. They both showed expressions of heartbreak and being at the face of death. These story show a place of a internal and external conflict. Also the characters are all together tired of fighting.
In “ The Interlopers” Ulrich’s and Georg's’ fate is that they are at the face of death over a feud their families have been having since before their birth. “The Interlopers” author using an omniscient narrator shows examples of irony. For example the narrator knows about the fate and feelings of the characters before they know what is going on. This is just like “ The Story of an hour” using irony about the death of Mrs. Mallard's husband.
This being said because the author says that Mrs. Mallard had heart problems so her

For example in these pieces one shows overall internal conflict with Mrs. Mallard having a feeling of relief and utmost serenity in her heart.
While Georg and Ulrich are dealing with external conflict between past generations of family and the present feuding of the two characters families now. Another example of external conflict shown in “The Interlopers” is when both characters wish death upon each other and in the end they both die. They were fighting instead of trying to fix the problem which was to end the feud now and for generations to come.
With all the similarities and differences in these two stroy the authors whether or whether not they were trying to created two works of literature that are easily brought together. These pieces are so relatable it's crazy. These amazing authors show excellent examples of irony suspense and foreshadowing to create these brilliant stories that are highly unpredictable leaving enormous ambiguity till the end of the
Thesis statement: The Story of an Hour by Kate Chopin has a unique and intelligent concept, but is defeated by lack of story building and a rushed, badly constructed ending. The Interlopers by Saki has a much more basic premise, but uses natural storytelling elements to create seamless story progression and a more powerful message.
Some of the things that are very different about these two stories are the setting. In The Interlopers the setting is outside in the woods on a cold and stormy winter night. In the story of an hour the setting is in an apartment building during a warm sunny spring day. Another thing that is very different between the two stories is the characters in the story The Interlopers the characters are two rough German men who are are disputing over a piece of land. The story of hour however a features a woman in a cozy little apartment with a heart problem. You also see her sister friend and
"The Interlopers" an "The story of an hour" are both very eventful short stories. The characters and setting of both stories have big life changing decisions. There is a lot of differences but there is also a lost of similarities.
The external conflict is that Ulrich von Gradwitz and Georg Znaeym Through the years the feud has only grown stronger. The theme is based on the hatred or enmity that Ulrich and Georg have one for the other. These two men have allowed their hatred to culminate to a point which now involves serious dangerous actions. The two enemies are in the woods waiting for the other one to run into the other. With guns in hand the two men look at each other with murderous
In the first story, Mrs. Mallard is within the privacy of her home, unlike “The Interlopers” which takes place in the outdoors. “The Interlopers” had a long standing rivalry and wished ill upon each other, while in “The Story of an Hour”, Mrs. Mallard is sad to hear of her husband’s death, even if later she feels it has set her free. The death at the end of the two stories differs as well. In “The Story of an Hour” Louise dies from sadness that her newfound freedom is now taken away, in contrast to “The Interlopers” where the two men die from man eating
Mallard’s sad reaction, after she ponders on her initial emotions by herself, she learns that the relationship with her husband becomes irrelevant to the wonderful feelings of individual freedom. Initially, Mrs. Mallard grieves upon hearing her husband’s death. As the story progresses, Mrs. Mallard begins to develop her true emotions towards the death of her husband after reflecting in her room alone. Finally, Mrs. Mallard’s initial feelings of sadness are overpowered by her discovery of the feelings of freedom. In conclusion, although individuals may react dramatically when facing a sad situation, their emotions may change as a result of the discovery of a previously unknown feeling of
Whatever side one picks on the character of Mrs. Mallard, it is hard to overlook her tragic ending. Some might disagree with the doctor’s opinion in the end of the story in that she died from “a joy that kills” (CITE). It could be quite the opposite, they might say she died in despair at the idea of her newly found freedom being taken
I chose to do my analysis on the short story, “The Story Of An Hour”. The themes I see in this story is the quest for identity/coming of age, romantic/love, birth, and death. It is about a woman named Mrs. Mallard. She was an elderly lady and had a heart complications. Her sister Josephine and her husband’s friend Richards had to break the news to her that her husband, Brently Mallard, has been killed in a railroad disaster. Mrs. Mallard was sorrowful and sobbed in her sisters’ arms. After her grieving process, she wanted to be alone, so she went to her room and locked herself in. As she sat in the window, she seem to be calmer and accepted her husband’s death. She was not distressed of what had happened. She began to say the words “free” and her heart
The environments of these two stories are opposites. “The Interlopers” is set in a rugged forest in the Carpathian mountains. The atmosphere is cold, dark, and desolate on a “wind-scourged winter night”(Saki). On the other hand “The Story of an Hour” takes place in a large city. The atmosphere is bright and sunny with the trees, “all aquiver with the new spring life”(Chopin). The physical state of the characters in the two stories are also opposites. For most of the time, the characters in
“The Interlopers” and “The Story of an Hour” both have some similarities and some differences between them. They both start out as completely different stories, but further into the stories, it is easier to find the similarities between the two. The main storylines are nothing alike. The settings of the two are completely different, such as both stories have happiness before they die, which in both stories they do in fact die; and while one deals with physical struggle and the other with emotional, they both contain emotional resolutions. However, they share similarities in terms of use of irony and also the ending of each story.
The story the Interlopers is a great story with a deeper meaning to it.There were conflicts in the story creating a difficult relationship between Ulrich Von Gradwitz and Georg Znaeym. They got into a tough situation in the forest which led to them working things out. The characters feelings towards each other changed throughout the story. The situation they ended up being in was caused by their hatred for each other. This story shows how relationships can be impossible to achieve.
In "The Story of an Hour" by Kate Chopin, there are many different themes that depicts the relationship between Mr. And Mrs. Mallard throughout the story. These themes such as freedom, confinement, loss of self, escape and alienation. These themes shows the life of a woman's life in the mid 1800's, irony and marriage. The apparent death of Mrs. Mallard's husband shows us that she was living a life without freedom, suggesting that marriage in any form is confining.
For this assignment I decided to compare and contrast two short stories, “The story of an hour” written by Kate Chopin and “A good man is hard to find” written by Flannery O’ Connor. Both stories were written by amazing writers who provide a unique style of writing, characters and narration. In the “Story of an hour” Chopin employs specific structural and stylist techniques to exaggerate the drama of the hour. The story is told in different small paragraphs making it easier to read and comprehend. Since the story is considered a short story the structure of the story is made up of short paragraphs, many which only consist of two or three sentences.
Mallard’s unexpected bout of joy also supports the theme; if she was not feeling confined, her feelings of grief would not have been replaced by excessive joy. Time moves along, and she continues to whisper “free! Body and soul free!” (Chopin 2). It is further understood that the character was released from a constricted marriage because the words willingly slip roll off her tongue.
Firstly, these stories have different themes; the theme in “The Interlopers” is fear, anger, mysterious however in the short story “Two Friends” the theme is war, tragedy and true friendship.
