“The story of an hour” is a short story written by Kate Chopin. According to Wikipedia, she was born Katherine O’Flaherty on February 8, 1850, in St. Louis, Missouri. She was an American author of short stories and novels. She is now considered by some to have been a forerunner of feminist authors of the 20th century. “The story of an hour” was written on April 19, 1894 but was originally published in Vogue on December 6, 1894 as “The Dream of an Hour”. It was first reprinted in St. Louis Life on January 5, 1895 as “The story of an Hour”. The reason behind the title of the short story is because the whole story is within an hour. Women really were the ones that just stayed home, took care of the family and the house while men just went out and worked and expected women to do everything for them. The women have same feelings as men, but men never wanted to hear of them and wouldn't care because thats just how men were back in that period of time, Women lived a life of impowering men, like a shadow and never spoke their opinions. Even if their husbands would abuse them, they couldnt say anything because no one would believe it or even care what she had to say.

After she divorces the death of her husband. Mrs. Mallard locks herself in her room "facing the open window" she starts thinking about her new life. Possibly at first she feels truly happy, happy that she was now free from her husband and the life they onced shared together, the open window in "The Story of an hour" also symbolizes the open path to a new inspiration leading to a new choices and to a new spirit for a new life, as Chopin later clearly represents that Louise is drinking in a very elixir of life through that open window. Now that she could live for herself, she wanted nothing more than to have a long time to enjoy it.
