Strengths And Weaknesses In Literature

I have experienced many strengths and weaknesses throughout my writing in AP Literature. From quick writes on quizzes to in-class essays, my knowledge on my own writing has increased more and more. Writing is a skill I will continue to work on as I have come a long way since the beginning of the year, believe it or not. But my skills still have their ups and downs. Overall, I still need to improve on my ability to specify details in my evidence and avoid plot summary. On the other hand, I do well in my ability to follow the structure in the “roadmap” of a piece of writing and to provide analysis of different themes within a piece of writing.
Some of my low points in writing is not providing enough detailed evidence and having more summary than analysis. When one reads any type of writing, they should be able to pinpoint any particular scene and open up to that exact page in the book of the evidence being used. However, my writing contains evidence that is too broad. I merely only state a characteristic of a character, but not a specific occurrence in which the character shows off this specific trait. For example, in my Jane Eyre essay final, I claim that St. John “allows religion to devour his life”. I then go on and on about how he overworks himself, misses out on marrying Rosamond, and convinces Jane that she is going against God when she doesn’t accept his marriage proposal.
