ASSIGNMENT:
STUDENT 1
Question 1: What is your greatest strength culturally speaking? Explain.
According to me the strength of Dubai’s culture is the fact that even in the light of sky scrapers it has not let down its rules and regulations. Moreover I think it has tried to blend in with the western culture. The process of making the country more urbanized has lead to its reputation as the world centre of beautiful and highly modern buildings. The culture here is highly influenced by the religion of Islam. The influence can be prominently seen on its music, architecture, fashion, food and lifestyle. Dubai has learned how to make a proper blend of the culture of the native people with the culture of the foreign-born. One good example of this

According to me one tool could be to increase your level of sensitivity and your powers of observation. I think when you’re in a foreign country; you should learn how those around you conduct themselves and one another. Listen more than you talk and chances are you’ll learn more, faster. It’s not easy to absorb everything that is happening around you at such times; it can be beneficial to tap into your self-awareness skills. Another step to increasing cultural sensitivity is building the cultural knowledge of the workforce. One should set an example and see what he/she can learn online or through books and encourage others to practice the same. Anything you can do to celebrate the diversity will help increase cultural awareness and acceptance. Make an effort to recognize the festivals and holidays of other cultures to show others that their cultures are being recognized.
Question 4: Choose one dimension in which the results were a surprise.
What I found surprising is that according to the results work is done by the rules and bylaws when decisions are made, but I think we do consider relationships among the people. The people in Dubai are united and have a feeling of unity and brotherhood towards each other. They support one another and when a crucial decision is to be made the views of the whole community are taken into account. The rules hold an important part but the relationships among the natives is also very important.
Communicators who succeed in a diverse workplace must educate themselves about different cultures and co-cultures. Treating people from different cultural backgrounds with respect is essential. Finally, being willing to acknowledge and discuss cultural differences can help communicators understand and appreciate one another. The impact of culture and listening is very important in everyday life. Think about how many times you have had problems understanding someone from a different culture or even a different sub-culture. Now think about how many times someone from a different cultural background may have had problems understanding you. I know realize once that e-mail was
"The World," a series of 300 islets laid out to resemble a map of the world. These manmade islands will also offer tourists beach real estate and extensive opportunities for leisure.1° Finally, the emirate has begun work on a structure that is set to become the world's tallest building, the Burj Dubai. The exact height of this edifice is a closelyguarded secret.'' Another facet of Dubai that visitors quickly take note of is the city's shoppingoriented culture. The city contains numerous malls, many of which offer stand-alone outlets for upscale
Cultural Competence is a complicated assimilation of education, beliefs, and experiences which would strengthen communication and efficient interaction cross-culturally. However, culture is defined as one way of life. It is not defined by race, language, food, religion, and ethics. With a job that involves constant involvement or entanglement with different culture, it is important for cultural competence. To be cultural competent is the ability to know one difference but still understands, respect, and safeguard the individual right to self-confidence, self- interpretation and status. Nevertheless, working with people of different cultural diversity might be difficult especially it differs from our own core culture. Therefore to prevent bias
I was able to demonstrate cultural competence when I volunteered at the hospital reading books to patients. I had a chance to interact with diverse groups and learn about different cultures. Some patients used to teach me their language and this is how I became more culturally sensitive. In the beginning, I had a hard problem connecting with them because I lacked the knowledge of their cultural practices. So to solve this, first I had to become aware of my own culture by asking my parents some questions and reading books that pertain to my culture. I had to understand how my culture has affected me before I understand how it affects others. The reason that I thought this was important was because if I become comfortable talking about my culture
The best way to do this is to learn about groups different from yoursand recognize your limitations and the need to refer clients on occasion. This also helps the way a person discusses issues and problems. We should be aware if the problem resides in the individual or the environment. We should also improve our awareness, knowledge, and skills to work with clients who are culturally different from you. It should be our lifetime task to avoid stereotyping any group or individual while trying to learn as much as possible anout various cultural groups. Also keep in mind that everyone is unique. Worldview is how people view humanity and the world. We should listen to the client and respect their worldview. Diversity is endemic to races and ethnicities. Race, religion, ability, disability will always be important to learn more about our widely diverse populations. We also need to give special attention to how socioeconomic ractors, racism, sexism, heterosexism, and other oppressive forces may influence a client's worldview. We should increase our own awareness, knowledge, and skills to understand our clients point of view. Attend and listen to undersyand and learn the worldview of others as they tell you their stories. Be mindful of the history of the culture bias and impact of discrimination on the client. Over time we will expand our knowledge and skills with
I think I have a relatively good cultural sensitivity, since I am a minority ethnic group in my home country, and I had the chance to explore more diverse cultures at here in the US. My strategy is talking to more people. I used to scared to talk to people at here, because I was so worried about my words can offense others due to the cultural differences. Nevertheless, throughout all these years, I found that people in general have higher tolerance than I thought. With this finding, I talked and asked people when I see something. I have been using this strategy since last year, and it worked pretty well. Now, I would just ask if I have things unsure. If for problems might not be appropriate to ask, I would get their permission before I ask questions. I will keep doing this in the future, which is talking to more people, listening to their
What is culture? How does one simply provide a meaning to a word that explains every aspect of life and how we choose to live it? Well, Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary defines culture as such, “the customary beliefs, social forms, and material traits of a racial, religious, or social group; also: the characteristic features of everyday existence (as diversions or a way of life} shared by people in a place or time” (Merriam-Webster’s concise dictionary, 2002). With that being said the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is quite possibly one of the most complex and crucial cultures that we have among us today. It is extremely diverse in the ecosystems and biomes that make up the region. It has several different forms of cultures and that is specifically
Transcend differences to work productively with people whose cultural context is different from one’s own (State of Oregon, DHS – Diversity Development Coordinating Council, n.d.).
Many say keep the same culture separate on the job, but that is not fair, I just have to deal with being the foreigner in America. Many times while at work when the different cultures get together to talk, I try to sit near to get an understanding of what they might be saying, but the results are the same, so I just venture off to doing something to occupy my time at work to help time go by. Many times at work I keep telling myself that I am bigger than them. How knowledgeable are you about the values, practices, and experiences of individuals who are culturally different from yourself? Explain your answer. As long as I have been in the working field the thought of knowing the culture, valves and practices of those from other culture never cross my mind. I always believe that through conversation one could learn about another person just by being there and watching how someone deals with the different portions of life, some in a good way, some in a not so good way. People are hard to understand, especially those from a different culture, many culture are still practice here in the United States the same if it they were in their own country. Many have said that many forget about their culture once they move to another country, this is true but is false as well. Many come to the United States and learn the
Unquestionably, organizations rely on business professionals that can manage their business across a variety of cultures. With the rise in globalization, it is imperative that business professionals have a high cultural intelligence, which is the ability to adapt to individuals of other cultures. Luckily, cultural intelligence can be developed and ameliorated with experience, training, and with a conscious effort (Cardon, 2013). As a Human Resources Manager, I have worked with people from numerous countries throughout my career, but they were all here in America. It was not until I took my most recent position that I traveled outside of the United States to one of our facilities in Mexico. Unfortunately, I knew a minuscule amount about their culture, but have been intrigued by them ever since
Being culturally competent in society today is so important, no matter what career field we plan to enter. As you said well, we live in a diverse world. If we view that world through our own ethnocentrism, there is a probability that eventually we will fail to recognize or underestimate how different someone else's experiences have been. I have an off-book but relevant example that I would like to share with you. I just began a new job, as I shared during our course introductions. One of the interview questions that was asked was about diversity, e.g. "Why is diversity in the workplace important? What are the advantages and disadvantages of diversity in the workplace?" I answered the question well, I thought, citing various definitions and examples that I had learned in my sociology classes. During the first week at work, I had met a few people around my age that had been very helpful as I strove to acclimate. I had some Welch's fruit snacks, and shared some of the packs with those people one day. I got a message from one of the girls that she wasn't able to eat fruit snacks because they were made from pork. I had not considered that there would possibly be a
I have to admit that we are very blessed with so many beautiful and breathe taking cities in the world. Dubai is just one of the many countries which has advanced from their humble beginnings and today are multi million tourist. Dubai is another city which has moved from having not as much as other countries once did such as money and a stable economy, to one of the richest cities in the world. In 1966 oil was discovered in Dubai and was a catalyst for Dubai’s economic growth. From a country that had come from not having a stable economy and not a lot of money, it has become like I said earlier, one of the richest cities in the
If one achieve cultural competency, the cultural bias will minimize itself. However, one can follow some steps to get the desired results. The foremost of which is building awareness about the beliefs, attitudes, and thought patterns of people of other cultures.
As a manager one would have to examine their views and cultural biases before trying to implement cultural literacy to their employees. Once managers and professionals become culturally literate then the cultural bridges at work can be formed. This can happen by
The United Arab Emirates is one of the most important tourist destinations in the region. The Arab spring had a very minor effect on the country’s tourism as it did not have a revolution but tourists in countries such as the Americas and Eastern Asia and some European countries were still slightly worried to visit any Arab country as it could be hit by the domino effect of the Arab Spring. UAE is not a neighboring country of any of the countries that had revolutions but it is in the same region.
