People are dying from pollution : The case for stricter environmental regulations.
Why are so many American getting sick? Because of pollution. According to a pew Research Center Survey people are saying we should have laws to stop pollution. It might lose money but we should do it. The majority of Americans think we need stricter environmental regulations (rules). The U.S needs stricter environmental regulations because toxic chemical cause health problems. Children under 5 are dying due to preventable environmental factors and saves lives of children.
First of all toxic chemical cause health problem. According to the university of Toronto, The toxicity is the ability of a substance to produce an unwanted effect which the chemical reached a sufficient at a certain site in the body. (E.H.S) toxic chemical harm us when they enter or contain the body. If too much is absorbed,it has negative effects on the body. Chemical we can find in our daily life we use toothpaste, cosmetic goods that we enjoy. (The world counts, 2014). It affects our body day by day and there is no benefit to health. A toxic chemical is one of the kind of Health problems and it may be caused by air pollution.
Air pollution levels are often dangerously high for breath. 47% of Americans lives in countries with frequently unhealthy levels because of air pollution (Roppolo 1). Due to the warmer temperature and average levels of pollutants from 2010,2011 and 2012, found ozone levels are higher. It is a risk
Air pollution is generally any substance that people introduce into the atmosphere that has damaging effects on living things and the environment.(www.nationalgeographic.com/environment/global-warming/pollution/) There are many causes, effects and many reasons like the environment, public health, and any other reasons. Air pollution is harmful for our present and future lives and should be avoided at all costs.
Air pollution is specifically dangerous because of the effects in can have on a person’s health. There is an unknown when referring to the health effects because the toxins released from various substances can be different. The most common form of air pollutants is carbon monoxide (CO) which is typically produced from vehicles and factories. Huge cities in the United Sates, such as New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco are some of the primary contributors to these toxic releases. The American Lung association claims that “about 47 percent of Americans live in counties with frequently unhealthy levels of either ozone or particulate pollution” (Roppolo). This suggest that the daily activities of the average American, causes them to live in polluted areas. If you compare this to the rate of population growth, it can be said that this number would
The author begins the article by discussing the death percentage related to air pollution and what causes the elevated levels of air pollution. Huth continues the article by pointing out that different areas have different problems related to air pollution. Finally, Huth draws attention to the fact that different countries have different solutions to the air pollution. Though this piece was written for the entire United States, the fact that air pollution can be deadly to humans is universally applicable. Though Huth is a reporter and not an environmental scientist, Huth does cite reports made by credible institutions. Though this article talks only about how air pollution is deadly and does not expand the idea to talk about other health complications, the fact that air pollution is dangerous to human health does support my claim that a reduction in air pollution will lead to a better quality of
Did you know many upper respiratory diseases such as asthma and others diseases like cataracts and skin cancer are aggravated by air pollution. The NRDC (Natural Resources Defense Council) states that “the following air pollutants are common triggers of asthma, ground level ozone, sulfur dioxide, fine particulate matter and nitrogen oxide.” Air pollution is the presence in or introduction into the air of a substance which has harmful or poisonous effects.
According to scientific studies, climate change could be a responsible factor behind the formation of more ozone smog, and increased production of allergenic pollen (Drought Increases Air Pollution… (n.d.) The health of many people is susceptible to irritation of respiratory system from coming in contact with this polluted air from smog, pollen pollution, and wildfire smoke (NRDC: Climate Change Threatens ....... (n.d.). Anybody can be affected by breathing ozone, but certain age group and disease condition make them more vulnerable. Outdoor workers and even people exercising outside, vulnerable age groups such as children, teens, and older individuals, people with existing respiratory and cardiovascular diseases, are more prone to outdoor ozone ”(Ozone Pollution - American Lung…n.d.). Health risk could range from mild "shortness of breath, wheezing and coughing; asthma attacks;"certain individuals might be prone to lung infections; their lungs could be inflamed (Ozone Pollution - American Lung…n.d.). People diagnosed with asthma, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease might face more infections and in need of more care (Ozone Pollution - American Lung…n.d.). According to Natural Resources Defense Council, an approximated "881,500 kids and 2,294,800 adults" are asthma victim per year (Climate Change Threatens Health....n.d.).
The earth is a wonderful place which we share with the plants, animals and birds. We must preserve the land we live on. A pollutant is any substance which contaminates the air, water and land. Pollution is the introduction of harmful substances or products into the environment or harmful changes that occur in the environment due to human actives are pollution. Pollution could be in air, water and land. As these harmful substances, gases and quality of life of all living beings will affect the humans. Pollution is very dangerous for health, environment, can cause sickness death in living beings, unnatural weather conditions and damage the crops. Pollutants are the key elements or components of pollution which are generally waste materials of different forms. Pollution disturbs our ecosystem and the balance in the environment. With modernization and development in our lives pollution has reached its peak; giving rise
After numerous complaints from citizens about the overwhelming pollution in the United States, Congress decided to pass both the Clean Air Act and the Clean Water Act in order to protect America’s environment and its citizens. Through the tight restrictions placed on businesses in these acts, Congress hoped that the pollution put out by large industries would decrease and its affect on the lives of everyone in the United States would lessen. Under the Clean Air Act, cities, businesses, and automobiles must meet air quality standards and follow provisions created by the Environmental Protection Agency. Under the Clean Water Act, businesses must have licenses to release certain pollutants and national water quality standards must be met. The Clean Air and Water Acts are extremely effective, therefore, it was necessary the government create them. These acts have helped drastically decrease the pollution in America and have improved the health of citizens as well as the environment.
The most widespread pollutant in the U.S. is ozone which is also one of the most dangerous. The ozone layer found high in the stratosphere shields us from a lot of the sun’s UV rays. When Ozone pollution (or smog) is at ground level where we can breathe it, it causes serious health problems; it’s dangerous to breathe, it aggressively attacks lung tissue by reacting chemically with it, it may also cause premature birth, premature death, infant mortality, and neurodevelopmental disorders like autism.
The primary health issues that come with the impact of air pollution are asthma, cardiovascular illnesses and premature mortality. These health issues are due to pollution and the poor air quality such as ozone. Thus, human health becomes a concern and issue. The individuals who are usually more vulnerable to such illnesses are the children and elderly. For example, there’s approximately 162,438 children under the age of and 258,586 adults aged 65 years and older in Riverside county that are prone to environmental health illnesses (cdph). According to UCLA institute of the Environment and Sustainability,
Air pollution has been recognized as a major threat to environmental health, and the effects that it can have on the population are extremely varied. In the environmental aspects, air
The first legislation for air pollution was the Air Pollution Control Act of 1955. Although air pollution was not a new phenomenon this legislation was the first to fund research to investigate the sources of air pollution, and raise public awareness. This legislation followed the 1948 incident in Donora, Pennsylvania of industrial smog that killed 21 people and sickened over 6000 people, and the international incident in London where smog killed over 4000. After research and investigation the Air Pollution Control Act was expanded into the Clean Air Act of 1963 and this Act was amended up until 1990. I believe that political/governmental reactions has been the biggest influence on reducing air pollution. Once the data and research was available the potential health risks were obvious. The CAA identified the largest contributors and imposed limits and subjected them to monitoring. The CAA has reduced emissions, removed lead from gasoline, reduced byproducts of fossil fuel combustion (SO2,NO2), increased fuel economy standards, and reduced the use of hydrofluorocarbons (HFC's) and chlorofluorocarbons (CFC's). A lot of these help regulate one of the biggest human contributors to air pollution, DRIVING. Big cities all suffer from traffic and congestion so my city (DC) implemented an anti-idiling law where vehicles are not allowed to idle for more than three minutes. My city also offers education and outreach services for air quality issues. The government in my opinion is the
One environmental problems that greatly impacts the United States, and more severely threatens low-income countries is pollution; specifically air pollution. Air pollution is caused when the ozone (smog) is a pollutant close to the ground, unfortunately so much pollution causes irritation to the eyes and lungs that leads to serious medical attention. This causes million of deaths worldwide annually, ranking it to be the worlds fourth highest risk factor for death. A fairly recent new article dated, February 12, 2016, titled Poor air quality kills 5.5 million worldwide annually, by University of British Columbia closely annualizes the serious threat air pollution has and states some eye opening facts about the issue needed to raise awareness.
Medline-plus states that “some air Pollutants are poisonous to us”, I agree with them because us humans are destroying air with fuel, factories, and even cars, we just don’t seem to care much for the earth we live on. Since we are contaminating air with chemicals and diseases and other stuff that can harm the earth the oxygen levels have decreased since the 1990. In the 90’s there was 21% oxygen level it has decreased over the last 20 years to 19%, although that might not look like a big deal but it is because if we keep decreasing the oxygen level we might not even have oxygen by the time the 22 century comes
Many scientific researchers have said that our environment has been filled with toxic chemicals, which us humans have had a part of. There are many different issues that should concern us surrounding these toxic chemicals. The major concern is that many of these toxic chemicals have been claimed to be causing damage to the health of humans and even other life forms. Another concern is that most of the theses toxic chemicals have just recently been produced; and by our environment changing everyday there is no telling what effects these toxic chemicals may have in the long run on the public 's health. Just about all of these toxic chemicals exist in the way they do because of humans. As humans we practice a lot of different activities that cause toxic chemicals to pollute our environment such as, agriculture, industrial, and many domestic activities as well. Many of the toxic chemicals that we produce and use don 't get used in a effective way, which causes them to be wasted, left abandoned, and disposed of. When toxic chemicals are not disposed of properly they effect the environment and the public 's health in a negative way.
Pollution is the introduction of harmful substances or products into the environment. It is a major problem in America and as well as the world. Pollution not only damages the environment, but damages us also. It has cause many problems ranging from lung cancer to the greenhouse effect. It is all among us but we continue to live in our own filth. What is the reason behind this flawed logic? In this paper I will examine the problems and solutions for this issue.
