I believe it’s important for everyone to have strong communication skills, especially college students. Reading and writing are fundamental in building those skills. In the online setting, the majority of our assignments will be in the form of discussion posts, narrative posts, and essays, making those skills paramount in our success. We need to be able to convey our thoughts and ideas in a clear, concise manner as to not confuse the reader. It is also important to stay on topic so that the reader doesn’t get bored or lose interest. One of my main goals in returning to college is to become a better writer. I look forward to strengthening my communication skills so that I may achieve that
College writing is a lot more difficult than it was in high-school. Obviously, this will be the case for everyone, but I am really not used to having the freedom to write what I want in my own unique style or be able to choose out of an array of articles. By the end of the semester, I expect to be able to have the rhetorical strategies nailed into my brain, similar to how everyone as children learned common
In order to effectively communicate, one has to be able to convey a message through a letter, which would be an easy thing to do if one has a mastery of their writing skills. The following presentation describes what a letter is and outlines various types of letters. Also included in the presentation is the various rhetorical elements that can be used to help strengthen one’s quality of writing. The letter presentation helped in developing skills in not only writing, but also public speaking, which is another skill that is highly valuable. Verbal communication is just as important as written communication. Having a multitude can make one marketable when trying to achieve professional goals. In relation to the college essay example, an interview is another common component of the college admissions process, and being able to convey thoughts verbally can show one’s intelligence and
After taking Honors Written and Oral Communication freshman year I have changed as a communicator. I have grown in many areas as a writer and speaker; however, I have also have skills that need improvement. From the Fahrenheit 451 essay to the six-word memoir, my writing capabilities and experience has changed. I have sincerely grown in certain areas whereas I have also fell short in other areas.
In “Expectations for College Writing,” the author indicates the importance of thinking and communicating to succeed after college. A writer’s style acknowledges a social or academic expression. A writer’s skill to rationalize ideas and think critically demonstrates an essential technique for enhancing communication in the work environment.
Once again, Marian’s English department has taught me how to do that. During grade school, I had to write essays and give reports, but I never really went beyond what the rubric wanted, especially with the essays. I had a formula that I followed on every essay, and although I always got an A, I never appreciated how important good writing was until sophomore year when we had to write our research papers. At the start of the paper, every paragraph I wrote was closer to flowery prose than academic writing, but with the help of Miss Royal, I was able to transform it into academic writing that focused on informational content rather than flowery prose-like writing. During the last two years, I have had to integrate my ability to write academically with my ability to write critically. Beyond that, my ability to communicate verbally has also been improved by the English department. Although I have always been good at public speaking and never been afraid of it, the many oral reports I have given have greatly improved my style of presentation. In particular, the quarterly book reports we did with Miss Royal enabled me to refine my style to be focused more on the meaning of the book, not just the characters and plot. The ability to write and speak well will inevitably be
I now know that I am capable of writing anything I set my mind to, before I used to struggle coming up with a topic to write about and now the topics are quick to come up with which is great because it means less time being wasted doing absolutely nothing when most classmates are already on their final draft. What I thought about reading before entering college and what I think now about reading is still the same, I still don’t enjoy reading as much as I should in order to succeed in college. Strategies that i’ve learned and improved in writing are many, as
Have your written communication skills improved? What has been your best piece of written work so far this semester?
Working a full-time job, raising children, and attending college are not an easy task as many people could think. Parents always have difficulties in managing and prioritizing their time. I had to sacrifice my social life as well as my family this semester because I needed to focus on my English 1100 class. MacCaughey, who is my English 1100 instructor, has helped me grow as a writer because of the way he taught us on how to be a good writer. My confidence as a writer had always been low and I never had a clear direction in writing. Through this class, I was able to learn how to develop my ideas into writing process. Ascending the banisters of my writing process, I greatly learned about the narrative style of writing, the formal way to critical analyze a text, and write a response about it. I also learned how to write a persuasive text in a conveying manner and answering a question with the help of a secondary source more of
Students should care about learning how to write at the college level because it is part of the foundation of learning how to comprehend readings. Learning to understand any type of readings can help in the workplace as well as college. This is because the reader will be able to fully the grasp the idea of what is being told to to them. Therefore, the best way to learn this skill is being able to be a writer that knows how to “influence a student's comprehension”(Alhabri 2). This could also help in the workplace because you know what to do in order to get the job done effectively.
Life is a cycle of learning and the dissemination of what we’ve learned. In each day of our lives we learn something new to add to our list of skills and knowledge. When I first entered university, I thought the writing courses were useless and just a waste of time since we all can write. Later, however, I realized how those courses are beneficial in improving our critical thinking and communication skills not only the style of writing.
A learner’s ability to communicate effectively through writing to his/her target audiences is a major prerequisite for academic success. It is also a major pillar of success in one’s career across all areas of practice. Even though, writing clearly is critical to one’s academic and career success, I have not always loved writing. In fact, for a long time I despised writing. At one point, I had a feeling that my writings skills were bound to remain stagnated throughout my life. However, time has proven that I was wrong. My attitude and outlook towards virtually all genres of writing has changed positively. The various helpful methods I have been exposed to by my English teachers through different grades have helped me
During the course of this semester; the variety of writing styles and essays assigned to me in my communication skills class encouraged the development of my writing skills, as well as provided me with more self-assurance in my abilities. My writing, research, and presentation abilities enhanced through practice, determination, and the understanding I gained during this course. With every single writing assignment, I learned new innovative approaches and skills, which enhanced my abilities to improve my thoughts logically, enabling me to write more clearly, and to organize my papers more effectively. At the beginning of this semester; despite the fact that I already knew the terminology MAP: message, audience, purpose; I never really
Research types of writings at college helped me strengthen my writing skills because as I started to research on a topic, not only I learned more in depth, but also learned how to draw further connections outside of the course(class). I want to improve my writings in making correct connections and organizing ideas. Sometimes, I misunderstand the readings and end up making the wrong connections. In fact, my ideas are all over the place whenever I try to make connections, which does not clearly show that I have understood the assignment. These mistakes often led to downside of my grades. The most useful advice I received that helped me improve my writing is that “the word ‘writing’ actually means to put things together, so don’t be afraid of express your opinions in your writing your opinion.” This encourage me not to be afraid of writing and expressing my opinions.
Of the many expectations I have of English 1101, three are very important to me: improving my vocabulary, communication skills, and the ability to enhance my writing skills. During college the most fundamental class will be English. English will help me with all subjects in my curriculum, by building better communication skills, and will help with me with everyday life. In today's world of increased communications, particularly of a digital nature, writing skills are an important aspect of expression on a personal, professional and educational level. People send written communications more frequently and quickly than ever in the form of text messages, emails and social media updates.
In writing it’s important to have an understanding of what you’re trying to convey for your audience in addition to how you you will present your ideas. Effective communication extends beyond having well organized writing expressed in complete and coherent sentences. The style, tone and clarity of writing must also be considered, as they are constantly changing relative to the audience. Again, analyzing one’s audience and purpose is essential to successful writing. Appropriately, when choosing the most effective language, it is important to consider the document objective as well as the reader. In essence, this idea of effective use of language has been the overarching theme of this online English course. Each writing assignment
