Subcultures are around us everywhere. It’s a group within a larger culture, who have something in common. An example of this would be in ‘Body Ritual among the Nacirema’ which is a story filled with weird perspectives and traditions. Including the charm-box of the household shrine and the medicine men that have an imposing temple, or latispo. Culture is such a strong aspect in people as it determines how a person behaves and does things, which is shown in this book. The Nacirema people are not so far off from us modern day Americans.

Introduction The 1950s rock ‘n’ roll movement was rooted from a style of music created by black people and their descendants (Scaruffi, 2005). The lives of Americans were changed, as the older generation looked down upon this genre and life style, while the young generation fell in love with it (“America,” 2008). Artist of the 1950s played a huge roll in the ideas that influenced every aspect of it such as legends Buddy Holly and Little Richard. From moral changes to political changes rock ‘n’ roll arrived to America ready to make an everlasting impact (Stewart, 2008).

Most of the original rebellion was directed towards the British class structure. They wanted to express their disapproval of the structure that governed their country. In The Jam’s “Eton Rifles”, the band sarcastically attacks the upper class, calling them arrogant and preaching to them that rugby is the only thing making them strong (Punk 68). The Sex Pistols’ album “God Save The Queen” portrays the Queen of England with a safety pin through her nose on their cover. The reaction to this outburst of shocking rebellion from the mainstream society was a strong, displeased one. American writer Greil Marcus defined punk as, “…refusing the future society has planned for you.” Thousands of social misfits attempted just that. Through the many causes for this rebellious political expression: communism, anarchy, feminism, etc., the punks of England had a focus and a reason. It was this that made the “punk” a valid, yet undesired member of society, and the British public got to see this sociological change first hand (Chamberlain par.8). Although this movement was short lived, its impact was a phenomenon, and its effects were long- lasting, which distinguished this group from previous generations.

One of the biggest cultural movements to arise from Reggae was the Skinheads. Skinhead culture grew from the fusion between the modernists or ‘Mods’ and Jamaican rude boys. Mod culture was a youth movement in British cities that originated in the late 1950s, that represented a certain fashion, music tastes and scooter riding. The peak of the Mod culture matched up with the time when the majority of Caribbean immigrants arrived in the UK, in the mid 60’s. Due to a large amount of Mods being of working-class backgrounds, they were one of the few groups to mix with the Caribbean immigrants. Once Mod culture declined, due to commercialisation of the style and their demonisation due to the violence between them and rival ‘Rockers’, some Mods began the Skinhead movement by integrating Jamacian style and music into Mod fashion.

When discussing subcultures it’s important to establish what a subculture is to be able to correctly identify a specific subculture and differentiate it from a main culture. An example of a main culture or parent culture could be the most prominent culture of Great Britain, which would be its development from an island to a civilized prospering democratic country. The main culture that is associated with Britain that separates it from other cultures is that it is seen as a liberal democracy. The main religion associated with British culture would be Christianity, and most people would generalise British culture to be drinking tea, eating scones and having a particular “posh” accent.
