Suffering is a subconscious state of mind that people put themselves through and can unequivocally be avoided. The way an individual interprets the meaning of suffering determines their answer to the given question. My belief is that suffering is a state of mind that many people choose to endure, it is brought on by the individual not the outside world. Pain is sometimes seen as being synonymous with suffering; however, it is my personal belief that while suffering can be avoided pain cannot. Furthermore, one is essential while the other can be averted. People must experience pain, no matter the degree, in order to live a healthy and balanced life. The negative experiences that people go through can cause pain but how the person chooses to
Suffering originates from anger and sadness but then happiness is also suffering because it comes and goes.
Why do we suffer? Humans have spent years searching for meaning in the grievous events that happen in life. Some find comfort through religions that give reason to tragedy and teach that suffering is not always eternal. Others just accept that this is the way the world is and then do their best to adapt to that reality. Religions and philosophies, like Buddhism and stoicism, may try to teach its followers how to end their pain, because no one likes hurting. However, suffering is not necessarily a bad thing. It is painful, but suffering can bring new levels of meaning and appreciation to happiness. Pain is inevitable for anyone who cares about the people or things in his/her life. But if we were to eliminate suffering then life would become meaningless, because real joy is not possible without the risk of pain, and those who find contentment after enduring some tribulations appreciate their joy much more.
A time when I experienced suffering was when I was faced to deal with the deaths of both my mother and father in law in 2014-2015. Loosing someone close is never easy. My father in law was terribly ill. He was weighing 250 and ended up weighing barely 120 before death. He had 2 cancers in the body, the throat and bone.
Suffering is something everyone has to deal with, but what we become from it changes us.The definition of suffering is the state of undergoing pain, distress, or hardship. When undergoing pain, we might be hurting on the outside and the inside, but in the long run, we can put that suffering to some great use. In A Separate Peace written by John Knowles, some characters experience suffering throughout their lives. The act of suffering caused Phineas to be tough enough to do anything without fear standing in his way. Suffering can make a person stronger because it gives one strength, allows one to control the future, and prepares one for difficult situations.
Suffering is an unfortunate normality. However, we can look at it in a new and positive light. The pain from suffering can warn us of danger. Suffering reveals what is in our hearts. Suffering gives opportunity to trust God. In fact, God suffers with us in our suffering, and he comforts us. 2 Corinthians 12:9 says, “My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness. So now I am glad to boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ can work through me” (Bible, NLT). God can turn our suffering around for our own good, and in times of crisis can allow for us to find each other. “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all
Suffering is one of the mysteries of human existence. Redemptive suffering, suffering willingly offered up, can be of tremendous use; but the natural human reaction to suffering is not willing acceptance. On the contrary, the natural reaction is to avoid it as much as
Suffering-can describe a person who is filled with misery and despair. This isn't just something that is shown through actual people but can be shown through characters in books as well. One way to show how suffering is used in books is through John Steinbecks Of Mice and Men. The one character in his book whose suffering is the most undeniable would be curley's wife because of all of the hatred she gets from other people.
Suffering is happening all over the world at this very moment, it’s something we as people cannot escape or get rid. Years ago Bethany Hamilton was surfing in Hawaii when she was attacked by a great white shark. Her arm was removed instantly and she had to undergo surgery. After she was released from the hospital she assumed she would suffer the rest of her life, but she proved everyone wrong. Niebuhr says, “It is in the response to suffering that many and perhaps all men individually, and their groups, define themselves, take on character, develop their ethos.” Niebuhr is correct because suffering shows how you deal with situations, it reveals who you are as a person, and it proves how strong you are.
I agree with you because suffering is to undergo, feel pain or distress. Suffering make people lost in a maze that they made and it is hard for them to get out of it. Alaska suffer was quick, she didn’t feel it. However, the Colonel and Miles suffer was way more pain feel and lasted longer. The Colonel suffered from his thought about being the one responsible for her death by letting her go out drink at mid night. Miles suffer was more about him not seeing her again especially after the relationship that he had with her before she die.
There are many different perspectives on suffering with regard to its meaning, significance and purposes. Pope John Paul II (1984) wrote "On the Christian Meaning of Human Suffering", that it centres on the notion of redemptive suffering - to remit one’s sins in order to save the soul from eternal suffering (damnation). Personally, I believe suffering can have a purpose. It can enrich life by giving us knowledge of both the good and the bad, arguably making us more appreciative of what we have . Indeed, James Stewart (2005) purports, "If there were no suffering, would there be compassion? If there were no discipline and hardship, would we ever learn patience and endurance? Construct a universe with no trouble in it and immediately you banish some of the finest qualities in the world."
What is Suffering? Suffering is the state of undergoing pain, distress , or hardship.Pervasive suffering is suffering of change. Suffering from change means starting out with pleasure and it turning into pain. There are three different ways of suffering visible, hidden and invisible. I think the most common way is hidden because nobody wants to show that inside there really suffering .Is there a way to end suffering? No there is not a way to simply end it. Suffering is something everyone encounters there is no way around it. Everyone encounters death, old age , sickness, etc. . The story that i most find interesting is the story of Dza Mura Tulka. He was deeply in love with his wife and didn't do anything without her. He loved her so much that
“Suffering” is a word which carries negative connotations, used to incite pity, empathy or fear. Why would it not? Is suffering not simply agony, defined justly by the Oxford Dictionary as “the state of undergoing pain, distress, or hardship” (“Suffering)? Yet, we accept suffering as part of life, a fundamental aspect that defines living. Nietzsche tells us that the very act of living is suffering itself, but to survive is to find value in that suffering. Yet, what sort of value can be attached to an idea so negative? Pico Iyer’s editorial in the New York Times explores the value of suffering, likening suffering to passion and “[p]assion with the plight of other’s makes for ‘compassion’” (________________).I began to think upon the cohesive
Alain de Botton's "The Consolations of Philosophy" addresses essential chapters in the field of philosophy and the last chapter is focused on providing Nietzsche's view on human pain as an important concept in people's lives. The German philosopher believed that society had a flawed understanding of ideas like suffering and failure. From his perspective, individuals failed to understand the complexity of suffering and embrace it in order for them to be able to succeed. Considering Nietzsche's theory, great people only become great as a result of overcoming their problems and refraining from spending most of their time trying to appreciate simple pleasures in life.
The suffering of man is a very complicated matter that is most likely impossible to understand completely. It is a subject that people have grappled with since the dawn of recorded history. In fact, suffering is evident in every form of art man has created. Suffering is in our paintings, our poetry, our music, our plays, and in anything else that is conceivable. But still, we as a whole still struggle with the idea of suffering. It is my opinion that some individuals may grasp the notion of suffering more than others, but that no one person will ever fully understand suffering in every form. A person may only understand his or her own personal suffering, not suffering as a whole. It is the next step to then say
Human suffering happens every day, everywhere, in many types and ways all around us. We do not always see it, but that does not mean it does not exist. When we do see it exist we commonly ask ourselves, "Does human suffering have meaning?" I can answer this question easily. Yes, it does have meaning. I can answer this because of the four readings we read. However, as I examine this question deeper I see that the four readings have different ideas on "meaning" or the reason for suffering. Looking at the definition of the verb (to) suffer, "feel or undergo pain; sustain damage or loss," we see that suffering is something that can happen because of more than one action. Each of the readings explained a different
