For the general groceries, sugar is considered as the fundamental spice to American family. However, consuming sugar excessively will conduct a series of negative effects for the health issue. According to Harvard study, the author mentioned that people are absolutely aware of consuming a huge amount of sugar could be harmful for the human bodies. Instead, they don’t seriously care much about ‘added sugar’ (“How to Spot”, 2014). For this point of view, people are not knowledgeable about consuming a large quantity of added sugar will be harmful. Moreover, people omit the negative effects of added sugar (“How to Spot”, 2014). Additionally, added sugar is a rapidly absorbed food, which totally increases chance to produce higher blood glucose and the insulin for human bodies. With either the level of insulin or blood sugar raised, the chance of getting diabetes will be easily conducted (“How to Spot”, 2014). To take a closer look at it, consuming too much added sugar will directly result in obesity, heart disease, cancer, high blood pressure, and dementia. Consequently, people are slowly dying by the added sugar. Another precise study conducted by Harvard health publications, a long-term study found that people who consume twenty five percent or more added sugar have higher risk of dying than people who consume less than ten percent of added sugar (A Sugar Diet, 2014). Also, the author refer that added sugar contains nearly ten percent of calories in diet per day (A Sugar Diet,
I grew up playing the game “Candyland”, and I dreamed of finding the golden ticket and living in Willie Wonka’s factory. I was also given a Gatorade after every sporting event I ever played in so what could be so bad about sugar? Sugar, real and artificial, can be found in almost every product we consume and although sugar is a simple carbohydrate that the body uses for energy, its impact on our body is far from simple. The consumption of sugar has been linked to a host of chronic health problems, including obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. The addictive nature of sugar is also a significant problem that leads to the other detrimental effects listed above. Sugar has also been useful to help preserve goods, fuel fermentation, balance acidity, and add flavor to other foods. Whether it’s cereal, spaghetti sauce, or yogurt, sugar is everywhere and has become unavoidable in our daily diets. As Americans, we have become accustomed to the sweet addictive taste of sugar, and our dependence on excessive amounts of sugar in its different forms has become alarming to many health experts. In analyzing preference and dependency with sugar, I will trace the addictive nature and major risks sugar has placed on society.
The past fifty years has seen a spike in the consumption of sugar, that number totaling a tripling increase. However, sugar is not the only risk factor here, alcohol and tobacco can also be attributed with the spike, albeit not as prevalent as sugar. The biggest question that Lustig et al. poses to its’ readers is this: “What aspects of the Western diet should be the focus of intervention”? (par. 3) The current USDA has been deemed “boogeymen” of diets, as well as the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). Lustig et al. all believe that our attention should be turned towards “added sugar”, which is a sweetener that has fructose in it. Perhaps the biggest controversy from the past fifty years has been none other than a severe culprit that experts know as high fructose corn syrup or HFCS.
The American diet is based mostly in processed food which contains enormous amount of sugar. The excessive consumption of sugar can cause diseases such as obesity, heart diseases, alzheimer, liver diseases, diabetes and others. One of the problems with the consumption of sugar is that people get sick progressively without the knowledge that it is caused by sugar. In addition, sugar is an addictive food and life without it is almost impossible. As a result, processed foods are cheaper than healthy food. It is hard to avoid processed food when Americans do not have time to cook because of their life style. Americans need to know the way to change their diet and improve their lifestyles. Americans sometimes forget about the amount of sugar that a soda or flavored drink contains. These drinks are tasty, but it will not satisfy thirst. Sugar is equally dangerous and has the same health effects than smoke cigarettes. Consume sugar in excessive amounts per day have a significant effect in Americans ' daily life. Americans should be aware of the diseases caused by their eating habits, therefore; they should be more conscious of what they eat and change their diet.
In the article from USA Today, “Eating Too Much Added Sugars May Be Killing You,” Nanci Hellmich claims added sugars in soda, candy, and many more sweets may be killing you. Hellmich says that added sugar can lead to an increased risk of death caused by heart disease, obesity, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, and stroke. She supports her claim by referring to a survey recorded by the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey done on 31,000 people, then reflecting on the dietary habits of citizens based on interviews, and finally providing the evidence that most adults consume 10% of their daily calories from added sugar which is very unhealthy and hazardous for people’s health. Hellmich writes it in an informative tone for the public
In the article, “How The Food Industry Manipulates Taste Buds With 'Salt Sugar Fat'” it talks about the frightening truth that has been going on in the past few years with obesity and diabetes. Americans tend to have a huge addiction when it comes to food made with sugar, fat, salt, and as well as
Tobacco, alcohol and poor diet are the main risk factors associated with cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes, and respiratory disease that kills approximately 35 million per year. Out of the three risk factors, an inadequate diet was found to the culprit of more diseases than smoking and liquor consumption combined. In Aseem Malhorta’s (2014) article “Sugar is now enemy number one in the western diet”, he claims that added sugar should be regulated as it is a health hazard that has caused the increasing prevalence of diabetes and obesity. Malhorta only focuses on sugar being the main causative agent in causing negative health outcomes, he fails to address the fact that there are many other confounding factors associated with each disease
When most people think about sugar, their first thoughts are not: heart disease, addiction, or slow and painful death; yet, unfortunately, these conditions are very real consequences of the unregulated and excessive consumption of sugar. In Nature’s article, “The Toxic Truth About Sugar” (2012), Robert Lustig, pediatric endocrinologist; Laura Schmidt, Professor of Health Policy at UCSF; and Claire Brindis, Professor of Pediatrics and Health Policy at UCSF, evaluate the world’s ever-increasing and toxic struggle with the substance sugar – also discussing counter measures to promote healthier diets amongst American’s and other societies. Lustig and his colleagues develop their argument using statistical evidence as they address the global impact of sugar, refuting minor oppositions, before dissecting each harmful aspect of the substance – even comparing it to substances more known for their toxicity. Eventually, presenting readers with possible routes of regulation, the authors firmly suggest government intervention in the production and sale of sugary foods. Although the argument is well executed, I remain unconvinced that government intervention is actually necessary.
Alan Levinovitz builds his argument that the dangers of sugar consumption may be overstated, and that there is a need to reconsider the best way to deal with the issue of sugar consumption in the U.S by using examples and facts. He also uses logical reasoning to develop his ideas and connect his claims to his evidence. Lastly, he uses persuasive techniques, which are particular words that appeal to his’ readers emotions to give power to the ideas put forth. With these tactics, the author will attempt to persuade the audience.
Many Americans believe that all sugar is bad for the human body. This statement is incorrect because in Konie’s article: Is sugar bad? Why I say no! States that, “Sugar is essential to good health, Im talking about the right kind of sugar as part of real foods diet.” (Konie.para 2.Line 4). What Konie is stating is sugar is good if it is natural sugar, like from ripe fruit and sweet potatoes. This kind of sugar is what the body needs to stay healthy.
My nutrition related term was sugar, sugar is something that we all crave and enjoy from time to time. For some sugar can be as addicting as any drug or alcohol. I once watched a documentary on the effects sugar can have on the human body and ever since then I have become obsessed about watching my daily sugar intake. I have become more mindful of it and try to avoid added sugar at all costs.
After reading the article “The Toxic Truth about Sugar” my thinking and reactions are identical to the description of the results in the article. Keeping the overall view of sugar and its danger to human health and mankind, I consider the authors are completely realistic and fair about ways of controlling and limiting the amount of sugar which processed-food industry adds to its products.
U.S. Sugar is one of the largest producers of sugarcane in the country. Its farms lie in the Everglades Agricultural Area (EAA), which consists of 700,000 acres of drained farmland that were formerly part of the Everglades its self. (Duke University, 2016). U.S. Sugar’s facilities process sugarcane into about 800,000 tons of raw sugar annually (U.S. Sugar, 2016a). Agricultural production generally requires significant amounts of water, but growing sugar cane in Florida’s dry climate requires even more.
I have a brief idea based on my own experience. I was diagnosed with hypoglycemia when I was ten, basically because I spend too much playing and no so much eating, what affected me in many ways; I had attention problems, I was tired and dizzy a large part of the day, so, after the diagnostic my diet became really strict. Also I went through different exams, and sugars test. So, during the whole process I started to understand how sugar affected the body, and the importance of controlling the amount of sugar we eat daily.
Sugar is bad for you so I say the government needs to step in and put all of the added sugar on the label. The proposal being considered by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) would add a new line to labels on packaged food products. The new information would note how many teaspoons of sugar had been added.some people are diabetic and I think it is important that they put the extra label for the added sugar. Rats were given Oreo cookies in one space and rice cakes in the other It was clear, Honohan said, that the rats preferred the Oreos. They split the cookies apart and devoured the cream first (which is full of sugar) and then went on to eat the cookies. (also Full of sugar)It is basically saying that the rats like high sugar, and oreos
This research predicted that sugar could lead to negative effect on people’s health. It is true that most people are eating sugar every day and it can be harmful to people’s health. There is some research that said sugar is not that bad; however, most of the research mentioned about negative effects which can drives heath problem: diabetes, fatigue, weight gain, and addicted eating sugar. According to the survey results, all of the participants were eating sugar, and half of them were prefered to eat less sugar. This may be because many people are considering the amount of sugar when they are eating food. Furthermore, around 75% participants considered the relation between eating sugar and health, and almost 50% participants were familiar with a less sugar project, which probably means that people think eating sugar can make health problem. In addition, around 35% of respondents replied they had experiences to stop eating sugar because they were concerned with negative effects to their health: diabetes, skin trouble, weight gain, teeth problem, and fatigue. This survey is not fully representative as the sample size is small, but some people got health problem because of eating sugar, so it could be helpful to know the negative effects that cause to health problem. It is true that eating sugar can be harmful to
