A truck packed with explosives in Baghdad's Karrada neighborhood killed at least 125 and wounded over 200 on Saturday night when residents were celebrating Ramadan. Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attack, which wiped out many families as they were gathered hours after breaking the fast on the holiday to mark the end of Ramadan. The slain included 25 children and 20 women in the suicide bombing. "The killing and maiming of children is a grave violation under international humanitarian law," UNICEF said in a statement. "As violence across Iraq intensifies, children continue to pay the heaviest price." A refrigerator truck packed with explosives plowed outside a shopping complex in a predominantly-Shia area and blew up. The building …show more content…
In a video posted online, people were seen throwing bottles of water, buckets, shoes, and stones on his SUV convoy as he left the area. "I understand the emotional feelings and actions that occurred in a moment of sadness and anger," he said in a statement. Abadi announced a three days of national mourning for the victims of the attack. Buildings in the area were set ablaze by the bomb, and some were badly charred. Firemen worked for over 12 hours to douse the fire. Iraq is still using bogus bomb detectors at the checkpoints, which were determined as fake by the government six years ago. Abadi ordered the devices to be rolled back from Baghdad and other provinces, and replace them with improved inspection systems. A fresh probe was launched against the manufacturers of the so-called bomb detectors. "These attacks only strengthen our resolve to support Iraqi security forces as they continue to take back territory from ISIL [ISIL], just as we continue to intensify our efforts to root out ISIL's terrorist network and leaders," National Security Council spokesman Ned Price said in a
On April 19, 1995, Timothy McVeigh set off a truck bomb outside of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. The attack under McVeigh left 168 people dead and more than 650 people injured. More than 300 buildings surrounding the area were damaged due to the explosion. “Until September 11, 2001, the Oklahoma City bombing was the worst terrorist attack to take place on U.S. soil” (http://www.history.com/topics/oklahoma-city-bombing). This bombing was a major eye opener to the US.
On the date of these attacks, suicide bombers in trucks that were loaded with explosives packed their vehicles outside the embassies in Nairobi and Dar es Salaam at around 10:30 and 10:40 am local time. Actually, it's reported that these bomb-laden trucks were driven into these embassies around the same time i.e. approximately five minutes apart. This was followed by a phone call from Baku to London shortly afterwards with the previously
Armed with bombs and automatic rifles, these members of the ISIS terror cell murdered over 120 people, leaving countless others wounded.
McVeigh and Nichols assembled an ANNM explosive apparatus mounted in the back of a rental truck. The bomb was made up of about 5,000 pounds of ammonium nitrate and nitromethane. It was all packed in a 1993 Ford F-700 Ryder rental box truck from Junction City, Kansas. McVeigh rented the truck with the fake license Lori Fortier helped him make under the alias Robert D. Kling. After McVeigh had parked the truck with the bomb inside (after igniting two timed fuses one for two minutes and a back-up for five minutes) he ran to his getaway car which was three blocks away. While running the bomb went off and lifted McVeigh off the ground. 90 minutes later McVeigh was pulled over in his yellow 1977 Mercury Marquis near Perry, Oklahoma. He was then arrested for not having a license plate and
When the Oklahoma City bombing happened, it remained the largest terrorist attack to happen on American soil until the attack on 9/11. On April 19, 1995, a rental truck was loaded up with 4,800 pounds of explosives and detonated just after 9:00 am (Krung, Nixon, & Vincent, 1996). The attack was focused on the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in downtown Oklahoma City. This tragic event killed one hundred sixty-eight people and also injured hundreds more (Nacos, 2016). A dare care facility was also located within the building and nineteen children perished in the attack (Nacos, 2016). There were hundreds more victims which were treated by area hospitals and private doctor offices. This explosion was so large, a shockwave was sent across the city which damaged or destroyed an additional 300 buildings in the immediate area (History, 2009). Timothy McVeigh and Terry Nicholas were the two men responsible for this devastating attack.
At 9:03 a.m. a massive bomb resting inside a rented Ryder truck destroyed half of the nine story federal building in downtown Oklahoma City. It also claimed the lives of 169 men, women, and children, while injuring hundreds
On October 23, 1983, a massive explosion from a 19-ton truck full of explosives attacked military barracks and killed 241 servicemen (including 220 U.S. Marines) in Beirut, Lebanon. The blast was the biggest known non-nuclear explosion since World War II and was the "bloodiest day since Iowa Jima," according to Rick Hampson writing in USA Today.
Timothy McVeigh packed a Ryder truck full of five thousand pounds of explosives. These explosives were made out of fertilizer. He parked the truck in front of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building. He lit a five minute fuse when he parked the truck, and he left. He was about six blocks from the building when the explosion happened. The explosion destroyed a nine story concrete and granite building. It also destroyed or damaged nearly 300 nearby buildings, and completely destroyed the vehicles across the street. People in the building survived by diving underneath their desks. This explosion could be felt up to fifty five miles away.
Thirty people were killed instantly. Eight later died from their injuries and hundreds of others were injured. A majority of the persons killed were messengers making deliveries, stenographers, clerks, and brokers (Gross, 2001).The blast was so strong it sent debris soaring as high as 34 floors and derailed a street car one block over(Andrews, 2014). Buildings shook as their large windows burst inwards. Luckily, most of the occupants inside were spared
The Oklahoma City bombing was a residential terrorist bomb assault on the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in downtown Oklahoma City on April 19, 1995. Completed by Timothy McVeigh and Terry Nichols, the bombing crushed 33% of the building, murdered 168 individuals, and harmed more than 680 others. The impact wrecked or harmed 324 different structures inside a 16-piece span, smashed glass in 258 adjacent structures, and decimated or smoldered 86 autos, creating an expected $652 million worth of harm. Broad salvage endeavors were embraced by nearby, state, government, and overall offices in the wake of the bombing, and considerable gifts were gotten from the nation over. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) initiated eleven of its Urban Search and Rescue Task Forces, comprising of 665 salvage laborers who helped with salvage and recuperation operations.
On April 19, 1995, nearly one year after McVeigh formulated his plot to attack the federal building, he parked a Ryder truck filled with his homemade bomb, comprised of “ammonium nitrate fertilizer and gallons of fuel oil” in the front entrance to the building, and at 9:02 in the morning, he set off the explosion. Shortly after the employees arrived to work an explosion defaced the north section of the building, severely damaging the 10 stories that comprised the structure.
April 19, 1995 marked the worst terrorist attack on United States soil until the fatal September 11, attack. The truck-bomb explosion outside the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City , Oklahoma left 168 people dead, which included 19 children that were in the buildings daycare center at the time, more than 500 injured along with the damage of 300 buildings in the surrounding area. The attack was spearheaded by Timothy McVeigh, along with his co-partner Terry Nichols and to a lesser degree, Michael and Lori Fortier. The attack was in retaliation to other incidents, one at Ruby Ridge Idaho, and the other at Waco Texas. Both were raids by the government on militia or religious fanatics. Civilians were killed in both these actions
Although the Islamic State (ISIS) has claimed responsibility for the blast outside the ice cream parlor in central Baghdad, a local source told Fox News that another militia group was responsible for the attack. The source noted that several militias have been fighting to control the city’s progressive areas.
On April 19th, 1995, at 9:02 AM a bomb exploded outside the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Office Building in Oklahoma City. The cause of the explosion was an Ammonium Nitrate and Fuel Oil bomb in a 24 foot rental truck parked in the street on the north side of the building (Oklahoma City Fire Department Report of the Bombing).
On September 9, 2002 it states that Saddam Hussein could have built a nuclear bomb in months if he was able to get the material he needed. He had wanted to make nuclear weapons and went on a worldwide hunt for materials to make an atomic bomb. In previous months, Iraq wanted to buy thousands of specially designed aluminum tubes. The IAEA believed that these were made to enrich the uranium. When the IAEA and the UNSCOM finally found out during one of the inspections they wanted to get rid of all the weapons and equipment in the facilities. Saddam Hussein never got to finish what he started because he was executed on December 31, 2006 for his actions of the nuclear facilities and killing his own people. Iraq still has the expertise and some of the materials needed to build nuclear weapons. Before Saddam Hussein death, he had repeatedly met with his nuclear scientists for two years because he wanted to continue in developing his nuclear program. This never happened because in 2003 he was caught and was put in a United States base in Baghdad until he was handed over to Iraqi government to face crimes against humanity on June 30 2004. He requested to get shot for his death penalty but was hung
