An associate’s degree in in medical laboratory science is most applicable
Will need to have majored or taken courses in some of the following: anatomy, mortuary science, laboratory science, crime scene investigation, criminal justice, embalming theory, restorative art, cremation fundamentals, clinical mortuary practice, sociology, and psychology
Also will want to take courses in the role of death and bereavement in society, human relations in organizations, and funeral directing and counseling
Have to pass an examination exam given by the National Board Examination
Technical school training in mortuary science for about six weeks to eighteen weeks
Complete an online funeral service program

Employers may require candidates to posses experience as a surgical assistant, autopsy assistant, laboratory assistant, radiology technician, or a similar position through which they have attained knowledge in human anatomy, the use of surgical instruments, and techniques
Can also job shadow in more detailed activities like: staining slides, mixing preservation fluids, fill a body’s cranium with plaster, sew up incisions, and properly evaluate the quality of products
Job shadowing can last one to three years

Responsibilities and Daily Activities:
A normal day includes: laying out all surgical tools to ensure they are in good working order, sharper knives and scalpels when necessary, transfer the body to examination table or refrigeration unit, assist the pathologist during the examination, and identify information on the patient
After examination, clean everything used, and release the body to an authorized party according to facility procedures
Admitting and releasing cadavers to and from the morgue
Assising the pathologist at an autopsy, including handling tools and specimens
Transferring bodies from hospital floors to the morgue
Transferring bodies from storage units to an autopsy
