National Builders Guild Outreach to the Elderly Written by D.L. Fuller National Builders Guild, a brotherhood of professional Black men, kicks off its community outreach program focused on assisting the elderly with the upkeep of their homes. NBG will periodically select an elderly homeowner in the Black community to benefit from its pool of expert craftsmen. These craftsmen will be performing minor repairs, as well landscaping and beautification. Acts 20:35 says, “ye ought to support the weak, and to remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he said, it is more blessed to give than to receive.” This community outreach program, focused on the elderly in our community, lines up with the heart of NBG’s mission; which is restoration of life

Aging is a natural part of life. However, many people struggle to stay active in their golden years. The attentive staff at National Church Residences is committed to the health and overall well-being of their clients and residents. Their senior living community in Chillicothe, OH, has provided safe, affordable, and comfortable housing to seniors for more than 50 years. As innovative leaders in home and health care for the elderly, they work hard to fulfill the social and human needs of older adults.
The idea of providing and protecting the less fortunate is an idea that comes directly from Biblical teachings. Throughout the New and Old Testaments, followers of Christ are warned to protect the poor, orphans, widows, and aliens.
We hear it all the time “it’s better to give than to receive,” from our parents, teachers, preachers, everybody we look up to for guidance and advice, but until you experience it first hand—it’s just words!
This past summer, I was called to act upon one of the Four Pillars of NHS, service. I joined my church’s Youth Mission Team and spent five days in Athens, Ohio. During this time, my team members and I completed various projects including making a free lunch for the community, shoveling gravel, building a ramp, and working with children.

Numerous times throughout the Bible, people encounter Jesus and offer their finest feasts for him. In return, Jesus works miracles and displays generosity when he heals a man with leprosy and makes the blind see. In addition, when three men showed up to Abraham’s home, Abraham didn’t necessarily know the men, but he offered them a meal. This great generosity comes from God teaching people to accept everyone and put others before themselves. Generosity can be viewed in today’s society as volunteer work or donating money, but of course is not limited to these
This summer I had the opportunity to volunteer at a non-profit organization called LifeCare Alliance in Columbus, Ohio. LifeCare Alliance’s programs and services assist impoverished and medically challenged senor citizens in Franklin, Madison and Marion Counties. These various programs include Meals-on-Wheels, the Columbus Cancer Clinic, Project OpenHand-Columbus, Visiting Nurses, Senior Dining Centers, Senior Wellness Centers, Help-at-Home, Groceries-to-Go Pantry, IMPACT Safety, and Senior PetCare. The goal of the agency is to support clients in remaining independent while in the comfort of their own homes with dignity, where they want to be.
Being an athlete, involved in school, and outside of school, creating the Elderly Christmas organization has greatly impacted my life. For years, I have always enjoyed helping people whether it be in learning, sports, or just helping complete tasks. My earliest memory of volunteering was at the nursing home that my grandmother worked for; I served residents ice cream in the parlor. Seeing the impact I had on them and the return influence they had on me brought great joy. As time went on, I talked to various veterans and empowering people; I was incredibly grateful to be in their presence. These people I encountered allowed me to become wiser. This program shows one person can make a large impact on people and I am truly grateful for this experience.
My goals are focused on direct interactions with the senior population. Specifically, I envision myself working with nursing homes, non-profit organizations, and the government. Accumulating experiences in these areas cultivates an exceptional professional mindset that can improve our existing and future healthcare policies cater to the elderly. Since the Aging and Health program fosters an environment focused on program evaluation and improving care quality, I believe this program is in direct alignment with my career path.

Age Well delivers meals, and also provide three meals a day Monday- Friday, provide support in home, promote health and wellness with programs, and provide transportation to and from the adult day health care and Alzheimer social day care center. The employees that worked in the main office there were extremely friendly, almost to the point of being scary. But I loved it they were so kind and everyone was focused on the wellbeing of everyone. Many of them
There are two scriptures that define what his admonition is. The first is 1 Corinthians 13:4, 7, “4 Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity caunteth not itself, is not puffed up… 7 Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.”
One of the biggest parts the Christianity is to help the poor and the needy. Christians, all around the world, are trying the meet the needs of the less fortunate. Whether it feeding the hungry, clothing the needy, providing shelter for the homeless, etc. The list can go on and on, but are they really helping? Could they be doing more harm than good? These are questions raised in the book, When Helping Hurt. Authors, Steve Corbett and Brian Fikkert, conclude that if Christians are not careful and thoughtful they can hurt someone while trying to help them. Although the book is filled with great examples and advice, this essay will address one aspect that I believe applies to the church I am presently serving in.
The poor are to be special beneficiaries of his Good News” (page 154). Jesus served the poor and what others thought to be the unreachable and so should we if we are to truly serve.
