Specific Purpose: To inform my COM121 class on how video games are part of peoples lives.
According to the Guardian article How Online Gamers Are Solving Science’s Biggest Problems, some video games are specifically designed to solve a problem in science. For example, in the game “Cropland Capture”, gamers find land that can grow crops to support the growing world population. Although games can be beneficial for kids, science, and the world, not all video games are like this. Most video games do not involve education of any kind. Violent and intense games can still evoke aggressive behavior in children and damage relationships.
While video games may be a fun distraction, playing them too often, as many people tend to do these days, is unhealthy, uneducational, and possibly even dangerous. The rise of technology over the past few decades has led to countless new ways of communicating and working, as well as countless new ways of distracting oneself from communicating and working. Video games are simply one of these methods of distraction. Although they can be a great way to destress when played every once in a while, the fact that they are now available on a huge variety of different devices, including mobile phones, means that most people now play them every day, multiple times a day. The amount of time, energy, and money people spend on these games is infinite, and can only lead them to another virtual level, rather than taking them anywhere in real life. I believe that there are many benefits to playing video games, but that focusing on them too much cannot be good for anybody.
For many people around the world, role playing games is national reality. Others think its time wasting and pointless. Research has shown that playing games such as, video games, board games and violent human games can help with creativity, multitasking and responsibility in the real world and in tough situations.
Video games have become very popular in the past several years. Recently, people have even been making careers out of gaming. Today, the internet and computer gaming have taken on a large following. The negative effects of these games and the internet on the basic population are deplorable. Many people, especially teenagers use this as an unhealthy escape from reality and in place of human interaction. Although that I hear from my doctor and others that too much video games playing is not good for me, I am not sure that I would totality agree to it. So, can playing one or more video games quite a bit teach me life skills? From my reading of Gerald Graff’s Essay, I feel that I can use academic skills that I have learned to skillfully play in all sorts of games. My innate knowledge of how to play video games can be considered hidden intellectualism because it allows me to use intellectual skills such as perspective, thinking critically, and creativity. My focus on this paper will be about developing several types of life skills such as strategizing, multitasking, teamwork, and patience that comes from playing video games from different genres.
As a gamer, the main focus is to play the game, beat it, and compete with friends to test and see who’s the best. There have been times where gaming had a major impact on my school work, because they (videogames) were mainly created for entertainment, but also have both positive and negative things and lessons to learn from them. With being an African-American, I am sometimes associated with being violent and dangerous. The games that are played are mostly violent and involves doing things that you normally wouldn’t, which would help the worries of those I encounter in the world. But I play easy going and light hearted games as well. Video Games do have their influence on how I look at things sometimes. One more additional thing could be the influences it does on my performance at school. Some games can be so interesting that you lose track of time and play till morning, but the consequences would be the amount of sleep you get, and the amount of homework you complete. These were some of the things Cam Adair mentioned during his Ted Talk and these can also be said about me. I’m not saying that gaming or technology in general is always bad, however it is possible to reduce gaming time to do other activities in life. I love gaming, as well as talking about them with my friends, but I’ve suffered the problems with playing too much gaming. I recommend avoiding these mistakes, or at least try your best to break the
