Is power necessary? Everyone wants power. People with power want to keep it and people with no power want to get it. Power is having control over one’s life and the lives of others. Power is very important in the novel “To Kill a Mockingbird “by Harper Lee. In the novel the story is set in Maycomb, Alabama. The central conflict of the story is a rape trial between a black man named Tom Robinson and a lower class white woman named Mayella Ewell. Although Mayella is powerless when it comes to class and gender, but her race ultimately makes her powerful.

We can all agree that basketball is almost becoming popular around the world. So many people play this sport but do people know how basketball started and how it evolute throughout the years since basketball was borned? So like every other sports and creations, there has to be a inventor and in basketball there was a man by the name of Dr. James Naismith. “Created in 1891 in a Springfield, Massachusetts YMCA gymnasium has grown into a game played worldwide by more than 300 million people”(historybits.com). So this game has been out for a very long period of time with many changing of the rules in basketball throughout the history. When it was first played in the late 1800s, there were different rules and even different looking basketball. As for the rules, originally there would be 10 people on the court but it first started with 18 people on the court which after couple of years it changed to only 10 people. Substitution was also different and the rule for this was at first no one can enter until the next game. “The rule was changed in 1920 to allow a player to re-enter the game one time. In 1934, the rule was expanded to allow players to re-enter the game twice, and, in 1945 the rule was finally changed to permit players to return to the game an unlimited number of times”(hooptactics.com). A literary element that are conveyed in the theme of the book, Michael Jordan, would be the facts that are given to his sports career time line and what he did as a famous athlete. Michael did not make his high school basketball team his sophomore year, so he would get up early and practice, showing persistence (Edwards, 1995, p. 7). This helped to convey the theme of the book because Michael did not give up on basketball. He would wake up at six in the morning to practice (Edwards, 1995, p.7). An example of the theme is present in the book Michael Jordan when the author Nick Edwards states that he “led his team to the 1982 NCAA Finals” (Edwards, 1995, p. 10). Michael Jordan retired after nine years, but missed sports so much that he went to playing baseball for one season. His parents taught him that being a good person is better than being a good ball player. “He will often visit sick children in the hospital” (Edwards, 1995, p. 26). After missing basketball, Michael decided to go back and play for the Chicago Bulls. Michael was a good ball player and persevered through being denied a spot on his high school sophomore basketball team and went on to be a famous basketball player.

Through studying immigration statistical data, it has been found that the highest percentage of mexican immigration has occurred on the most recent decades. However, there was a high percentage of mexican immigration on the years of the 1920s and the 1940s. These two decades were having an increase in mexican immigration due to the establishment of the Bracero Program. This program was started during the 1920s and again in the 1940s, but was later stopped in the 1960s. Between and after, these time periods, Mexican immigration into the United States was almost non-existent. After an increase in the 1920s, there was a tremendous decrease in the 1930s only to increase again in the 1940s. Then in the 1950s there was a huge decrease in the rate of Mexican immigrants entering the United States. Mexican immigration began to have an increased number of border crossings and travel into the United States after the economic crisis in the 1970s. From this decade to present day, mexican immigration in the United States is only doubling each decade. Between these time periods, however, there was almost no significant amount of immigration. The years of low rate of mexican immigration were in the 1930s, 1950s, and the 1960s.
Some of the emotions and experiences Ron Woodroof faced in the movie, are similar experiences faced by real people living with HIV/AIDS. Even though HIV positive people may face certain struggles, the movie teaches people that living with HIV is not the end. Ron Woodroof lived 7 years later after his HIV diagnosis. Also, the movie serves as an insight for those that do not have safe sex. If people do not use protection, they are more susceptible to HIV, and they may become HIV positive like Ron Woodroof.
Running into the gym with my team, knowing it was my last middle school basketball game, but first championship game I felt elated and truly blessed. My knees quivered with anticipation after seeing all the bleachers filled with people. After realizing even the press and other media was in attendance I grasped the moment like a newly elected president at his inauguration. I am warming up doing basketball drills, when I began to look at the flags on the gym wall depicting the history of the basketball team. The years and dates of the last championship game, Historically a championship game had not been won since 2007 . The more I stared at the flags, the more it made me want to win this game and make history in this gym. As the crowd and cheerleaders start to chant, cheer and get loud, I started to feel more comfortable and rowdy more than I had ever felt in any other game that I’ve played. Waiting for the referee to blow the whistle for jumpall to start. I felt my fingertips tapping the side of my leg, which for some reason gives me a sign to myself that I am pumped up and ready to play!
