The PBS movie has me inspired. I love to read and hear about leaders, in fact I love just hearing about people who over came obstacles. To me Saul Alinsky seemed like a military general. The fact that he said “forget about charity the community will only get what they are strong enough to get” make me feel as though he is a true leader. What I have come to realize is that the majority of leaders are blunt. They do not waste time; they said exactly what they mean. Saul was a good speaker he was able to get people to side with him. That’s a powerful trait to have because it allows Saul to have more power within the community. It’s a simple rule really “He who as more people has the most power.“ Saul had a lot of education and the most important
In the article Contrasting Organization Approaching” The Alinsky Tradition” and Friedman Approaches, Marty Martinson and Celena Sue discuss several ways in which Alinsky dealt with situations which he thought could benefit the parties that were oppressed. He believed power lies with the people and forming of organizations was one of the ways that a society or community would receive positive results. The main premise of the organizations was to select a leader who could be seen as an outsider with a passion to motivate members of that community to plead their cause with the aim of winning.
From the vantage point of the present, it is easy to look back at the tenure of any great leader and draw conclusions about just what it was that made him/her great. We can examine the circumstances under which their leadership flourished; piece together what we know of their character and personality traits; delve into the factors that may have driven them; and dissect their leadership style all in an effort to pinpoint the source of their success. The ‘Great Man’ theory, popular in the 19th century and now thoroughly debunked, held that leaders are born, not made; suggesting that men like George Washington, Martin Luther King Jr., and Winston Churchill were born with the innate capacity to change the world (Landis,
In his book “Start With Why,” Simon Sinek describes the difference between leaders that inspire and those who simply delegate; he encourages readers to look at leadership with a new outlook, and he motivates people to act upon his vision: start with ‘WHY’ instead of ‘HOW.’ He supports his advice with anecdotes of events inspired by real people like Martin Luther King Jr., Steve Jobs, and the Write Brothers. He realized that these individuals all had similar leadership techniques, which happen to be the exact opposite of what other, less successful, leaders do. Sinek calls his formula “The Golden Circle” (Sinek, P.37), which provides insight for how people can be inspired, movements can be prompted, and organizations established. Upon finishing his book, I conclude that Sinek is onto something with his theory; in order to be an extraordinary leader, one must start within.
There are many charactics for leaders of change. There are bold, determined, confident, brave, and so much more characteristics of leaders. Cesar Chavez showed great examples for being a skilled leader, a determined leader, and so many more. Personally, a leader in change should be brave and inspiring. Cesar Chavez is a great example of a great leader. Cesar Chavez is a union leader and is a labor organizer. He shows examples of being brave and inspiring which shows that he was leader in change. He wanted to improve pay for the workers, working conditions, and improving the treatment. He’s introduction as a union leader started in 1952.
1. Why do you think so many people are diagnosed with mental illness in the criminal justice system? Why do you think so many offenders in the criminal justice system suffer from mental illness?
One of the worlds best known advocates of non-violent social change strategies was Martin Luther King Jr. He synthesized ideals drawn from many different cultural traditions. The image of a social activist and leader was the result of extensive formal education, strong personal values and licit ethics. This excellence in leadership can be traced to his character, which is shaped by his moral values and

The following paper will discuss how Martin Luther King Jr. was able to inspire and motivate people with his effective leadership style.
America is based upon leadership, leadership begins with authenticity of one’s words and ideas. Where would America be without leadership? What would be an example of great leadership? A notorious man named Howard Zinn, is the perfect depiction of an important leader. He challenged the normalcy of history and impacted the lives of many Americans. Howard Zinn is most known for being a historian, author, professor, and playwright. His life’s work focused on a wide range of issues including race, class, and even war. Among many of his talents His most important ideas and change came from teaching and being a social activist. Howard Zinn’s impact on our nation is still empowering and important in today’s society. But how did Howard Zinn become one, among millions most influential leaders and social activist? Howard Zinn led by example, purpose and passion, as well from personal experiences.
Both Jane Addams and Saul Alinsky, worked to enact social change within the poor neighborhoods of Chicago. Both would also go on to inspire many other social changes due to their methodologies and accomplishments. However, Addams’ and Alinsky’s approaches to bring about social change are often described as being polar opposites. One could argue though, that despite these superficial differences, Addams and Alinsky shared a commonality that is not often talked about.
Researchers have stated that PBS is highly influenced by ABA. The current controversy surrounding PBS is the ramification of PBS separating from ABA. Some behaviorists believe that PBS and ABA are the same. However, others feel that PBS is harmful to the ABA approach. The development of PBS was bolstered during the 1980’s to 1990’s by the US Department of Education National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research. The PBS movement increased with the Re-authorization of Individuals with Disabilities Act in 1997. PBS focuses on disciplinary problems in school, such as, severe behavior problems (self-injurious behavior, aggression, defiance) and works with variety of populations, such as Autism, Preschool, and Traumatic Brain Injury.
There are varieties of leadership styles. Niccolo Machiavelli and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr, are opposites in their characterization of what makes a good leader. One justifies that the “end justifies the means” while the other directs us that “it is wrong to use immoral means to attain moral ends” (King). I agree with the latter of the two believing that the first one burns bridges, while the latter builds them. However, both leadership styles exist today.
In March(pages 76-83) it shows Jim Lawson a leader taught the younger college students and adults to use strategies of nonviolence strategies to face off with the segregationists. Which caused the ordinary people to dehumanize one another to be prepared for all the segregationists that want to get rid of them. Some may say that not every leader could inspire or teach anyone in action to stand up.But I say that’s not true because of Jim Lawson, Martin,Diane N., and more have inspired other people to act in the Civil Rights Movement with them. Because of the heroes inspiration throughout the years ordinary people wouldn’t have taken action in the Civil Rights
When reflecting throughout America’s history, two people in particular exemplified the essence of true leadership traits, Martin Luther King Jr. and Nelson Mandela. While others displayed a vast variety of traits, Martin Luther King Jr. as well as Nelson Mandela displayed traits of leadership that stood the test of time, and while today, their traits still influence, as well as affect people in today’s society. Throughout his time as political activist, as well as South Africa’s first African President, Nelson Mandela’s
This video gives us information about what it is that makes a good leader. The information that Simon Sinek gives us in the video is very effective for a leader. Sinek was right about when a person gets a bonus. This would encourage anyone to work harder and advance above and beyond the call of duty. The position a person may hold is not exactly that important according to Sinek. It’s not the rank or superiority a person has in their job or business that makes the difference. We can be anyone in society and still be considered a leader. It would not be that difficult to sacrifice our time to help someone else. Anyone can be respected as a leader by becoming responsible. A person could choose to do the right thing even when no one is watching.
Leadership has played a valuable role throughout history in countless leaders and even followers. Although some of the greatest leaders in history lead for a more notorious cause, the leadership skills they conveyed and followed were key to the success of their goal and accomplishments. I believe Oskar Schindler was a great leader for many reasons because of how he dealt with the Nazi party during the Holocaust and how he adapted to change and from that change resulted in saving over a thousand Jews from death. Oskar Schindler shows how sometimes a leader has to change his values and therefore his actions to accommodate the surroundings and situation. As a result to this change
