In the book The Great Influenza: The Epic Story of the Deadliest Plague in History, John Barry depicts an epidemic disease greater than anything the world has ever known. The story takes place during World War I, after a deadly virus breaks out during the war. The disease gradually increases as people carried it from country to country, spreading it to those who were not immune to it. With its speed, it ending up killing over one hundred million people across the globe in the span of a year. It killed more people in twenty-four months than the Black Death killed in a century. It was a really interesting and enjoying read. I value the author John Barry and his way of writing in this book. His account for desribing the researchers and the origins of this disease in the first half of the chronical, really detail the important aspects of how science research connects to real life epidemic breakouts. Barry really gets descriptive in describing the actions of the American research physicians who tracked the disease and tried to not only understand it but control it. While reading the first part of the novel I asked myself questions about how all of the people living during this time survived the plague? Where they forced to stay inside their homes for long periods of time? Reading this novel helped deepen any insights I previously had. Many main ideas pop up a lot in the book like the collision between science and epidemic disease. As society was close to collapsing, a great deal of heroic researchers like Lewis and Welch, stepped forward, risking their lives to confront this strange disease. These titans from around the country revolutionized American science and public health, and their work in this plight led to crucial discoveries that we are still using and learning from today. I was really intrigued by John Barrys synopsis of one of the deadliest plagues in history, and I can't wait to find out just what the scientists did to fight this forceful disease and the effects it had on the bodies of thousands of
