Liam thought to himself, “What a tender young creature. What a nice plump mouthful, she will be better to eat than the old woman. I must act craftily, so I can catch them both.”
He strolled for a short time next to Little Red Riding Hood before starting, “look how pretty the flowers are here. Take your time and smell the flowers. Taste the freedom of the woods and feel free. Why don’t you look around? Listen to the sweet song the little birds are singing. You’re walking gravely along as if you’re going to school, while everything else in the woods is happy.” Liam watched as Little Red Riding raised her eyes and took in her surroundings. She ran from the path into the woods to look for flowers. Liam raced straight to his grandmother’s dwelling and knocked on the wooden door. He put his ear to the door but didn’t hear a thing. Just like Little Red Riding Hood had said, he could smell the hazelnuts and he licked his lips knowing he was about to have a tasty meal. He felt a little bad at the idea of eating the innocent grandmother but he would die from starvation if he didn’t.
“Who is there?” a voice called.
“Little Red Riding Hood,” replied Liam. “She is bringing cake and wine. Open the door.”
“Lift the latch,” called out grandmother, “I am too weak, and can’t get up.”

Prologues are often an author’s way of introducing important information or topics needed to understand the body of writing on a deeper level or as a way to direct the reader to a certain line of thought or specific interpretation of the writing. Anne Sexton writes a prologue for every single one of her poems in her compilation of fairytale poetry throughout Transformations. She gives the reader so many hints throughout her prologues on what the reader should pay attention to. In “Red Riding Hood”, Sexton draw immense attention to the issues of deception in real life though the importance she places on these issues in her poem. She calls out not only the frequency of deception in life but she calls attention specifically to the deception of a mother’s security.
The implied thesis I could gather from reading Little Red Riding Hood's story was "Listen to your mother and most importantly do not fall off course because otherwise bad outcomes will come about". This proved so significant in that Little Red not reaching her grandmother's in a timely fashion gave the wolf his chance to eat not only one, but two people. In essence, this is quite problematic due to Little Red Riding Hood receiving clear instructions from her mother and not abiding by those instructions. She was told to be very quiet on her journey and reach grandmother's before it gets too hot outside. And if she does not grandma will not get any better. The version Perrault had Little Red Riding Hood had a cake and a little pot of butter her mother gave her to take it to her sick grandmother’s house. So off she went to her grandmother's house into the woods where she was found by the wolf. The wolf had asked her a lot of questions only to find out where she was going so that he could later eat her. With the questions, the wolf had found out she was going to her grandmother's house then tricked her into giving him the location. He took the straight path making it first while Little Red took a roundabout way. The wolf had made it to the house and then ate Little Red's grandmother. Then he waited in the grandmother's clothes for Little Red. When she got there she knocked on the door and the wolf told her how to get in. then Little Red began questioning the wolf in her grandmother's clothes. Little Red had ask her last question “Grandmother, what big teeth you have got!” The wolf then ate Little Red. The story then
Meanwhile, Seth disobeys the rules and goes off into the woods. On his adventure, he spots an old shack covered in ivy and vines. He notices an old women that is gnawing on a rope that she is tied to. She asks Seth if he would come inside and share a cup of tea with her. Seth asks if she is a witch, then she becomes very furious and puts a curse on him. He sprints of like a cheetah and runs away from the “witch”. The next morning, their grandpa asks them “What do you suppose makes people so eager to break rules?’’ He keeps his eye on Seth. Seth explains to his grandpa that he was just very curious and that he met a creepy old lady. His grandpa nods and changes the subject. They are given some milk (the magical one) by Lena she said that it would give them the power to see “what is really out there.” Seth shows Kendra a hidden pond with gazebos, a boardwalk, and a boathouse. Grandpa explains that his yard is not a place for endangered animals, but for mystical creatures such as fairies, trolls, and imps. This land is known as Fablehaven and it is owned by lots of people, passed down every few centuries. He also explains that the old woman in the forest was actually a real witch. Of all the different versions of the Little Red Riding Hood, they have one common factor, which is the wolf. In the versions I have mentioned above, the wolf stays the same throughout the stories; he is very malicious and calculated. He waits for the little girl, or girls in the story of "The Chinese Red Riding Hoods," as there are three sisters whose mother left to go visit the grandmother. While the wolf was outside and overheard the mother asking for the oldest daughter to watch for her younger sisters. When it was dark, he disguised himself as an elderly woman and knocked at the door of the three girls' house (Chang 1). In the other two versions, the wolf comes upon Little Red Riding Hood as she enters the forest and asks her where she is traveling to. Throughout history, women have been portrayed in a variety of ways; by following a popular story that has been rewritten several times over the years, we can see this progression. “Little Red Riding Hood” was first written in 1697, and since then has been in a constant state of evolution and change (Elmore). We will be looking at the 1697 version of “Little Red Riding Hood” and comparing it to newer versions; this will give us a chance to see how attitudes towards women have changed over the years. So that we don’t confuse the different characters, we will explore “Little Red Riding Hood” one story at a time.

Although it is difficult to put a strict definition on what exactly a fairy tale is, there are many common elements in these stories that not only cannot go unnoticed, but also help us classify the genre. These elements include: clearly defined good and evil characters, the presence of royalty and poverty, magical properties and enchantments, a problem that must be solved, impossible tasks, fundamental morals, and core values (Heiner). Perrault’s version warns against wandering away from the safety formed by civilized society. A scholar, Eric Fromm considers the red riding hood to be a “symbol for menstruation” (1), symbolizing that Little Red Riding Hood is entering puberty and therefore womanhood and in turn moving away from the guidance of her mother and grandmother. This is also understood when she forgets her mother’s warning to stay on the path, and goes off picking flowers and chasing butterflies with childlike innocence. The sexual undertones were obvious in a culture that would outcast a young woman who lost her virginity. When imaging the ideal audience of fairytales, children are quick to come to mind, although, our perception of Little Red Riding Hood as an innocent fable is far from the truth. Alternatively, the origins of this story are derived from Italo Calvino’s “The False Grandmother”, a story immersed in symbolism and metaphorical symbols intended strictly for a mature audience. The preceding tale was “Little Red Cap “written by Charles Perrault and then later the “Little Red Riding” written by the Brothers Grimm. Although the details of these tales vary, they all maintain similar storylines. The stories revolve around the young female character Little Red Riding Hood who is sent off on a mission to bring her grandmother a basket of goods. During her adventure she encounters a wolf who engages in a hot pursuit to eat both the Grandmother and Little Red Riding Hood, only to succeed in the earlier rendition of the story. In this essay I will prove that when the Grimm’s Brothers and Perrault’s Little Red Riding Hood stories are critically analyzed, it becomes evident that they are inappropriate tales for children as they exemplify the consequences of a minor transgression by Little Red Riding Hood as being the misleading cause of the violence and seduction that occurs thereafter.
There are many versions of the classic story of Little Red Riding Hood and they all come with different names, details and ideas. A detail in the stories that one can see is that intelligence can end up being the saving factor in a bad situation. These stories such as, “Little Red Riding Hood” by Charles Perrault, and “Little Red Cap” by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm are all different in their own ways yet very much similar to one another in the ideas and thoughts that they produce from us as the readers. The second point explains how the plot brings ideas about gender, understanding the actions through the dialogues between the different characters. The tale describes the task that Little Red Riding Hood is given by her mother when she is said to go to her grandmother's house by herself in "another village" which refers to a far away place; it shows the ignorance of the mother to send a little girl alone without any warning; although in Grimm's tale the mother gives the child a very detailed warning where it is visible that the girl is less able to think and realize the danger by herself. This action demonstrates the danger for the girl to go alone since she can be persuaded by a stranger and fall in unfortunate consequences, in this case she is eaten by the wolf. Meanwhile,
Later on, we are introduced to the wolf, who represents men as a threat to women. The wolf symbolizes a man, who can be a lover, seducer or sexual predator. When Little Red Riding Hood meets the wolf, he wants to eat her but is too afraid to do so in public, for sometimes there are woodcutters watching. He instead approaches the young girl with the intention of seducing her, and she “naively” tells him exactly where she’s going. He then suggests for her to pick some flowers, which she of course does. Not only does she stop to talk to the wolf, but she completely forgets about her sick grandmother as well as her promise to her mother, in order to satisfy her own desires. “Little Red Cap had run after flowers, and did not continue on her way to grandmother's until she had gathered all that she could carry” ( ). Into the Forest (Anthony Browne, 2004) is a post-modern version of the old folktale Little Red Cap (Grimm, 1812) or better known as, Little Red Riding Hood. Into the Forest adopts certain characteristics of traditional fairy tales such as; happy endings and hidden adult themes. However, it also strays from familiar features as it lacks in evil characters and moral. The reasoning behind the decision to include or deny traits of usual fairy tales is to reflect modern assumptions of children and childhood.
