I think this video contributed highly to what we learnt about hormones back in the “Sex and the Brain” lecture, especially about estrogen. I did not know that there were several different forms of estrogen receptors, and that these receptors could mutate or their functions could be altered. I also found it fascinating that women with schizophrenia have worse symptoms in times when their estrogen levels are low. I have realized that these hormones are much more involved in the brain functioning than I initially assumed. Dr. Weickart also hypothesized that these estrogen receptors could be find at the areas of the brain related to reasoning and language, which relates to the schizophrenia lecture. The idea behind this hypothesis was that her
This is Damian form your Monday's & Wednesday's 12:30 pm class , it came to my attention that there seemed to be some problems relating to the test we just took on chapter 2 of the Human Sexuality class. Personally, im under the impression that i took the new exam although it had no timer applied to it and some of the question's apparent responses seem a little contradictional. On this questions for example # 1; "Which of the following statements regarding the desire phase of sexual response is true?" , #2; In which of the following areas would Masters and Johnson's research on sexual response be least helpful?, #3; Which of the following most accurately describes the plateau phase?, the book clearly states that this is
This video is about The Behaving Brain; it explains how the brain and amnesia work. According to the video, neurons duties are to receive information from other cells, process this information, and transmitting it to the rest of the body. This is done by traveling through dendrites, to the soma, to the axon, to the terminal buttons. Constant nerve flow helps regulate our metabolism, temperature, and respiration. It also enables learning and the ability to comprehend. The brain is connected to the brain stem, which is connected to the cerebellum, which is connected to the limbic system. The limbic system is made up of the amygdala, hippocampus, hypothalamus, and thalamus. The cerebrum is the largest part of the brain, where things are
Summary: The excerpt “The Gender Blur” from the book “Sex on the Brain,” written in first person by Deborah Blum, a science writer, in 1998, explains the sex difference and behavior that a person goes through on a daily basis. She also explains how their childhood may affect their adulthood. Blum states that “[s]ex differences are always generalizations: They refer to a behavior, with some evolutionary rationale behind it. They never define entirely, an individual. And that fact alone should tell us that there’s always—even in the most biologically dominated traits—some flexibility, an instinctive ability to respond, for better and worse, to the world around us” (240). Just because a person acts a certain way one day, does not mean they will
I found the article Women’s Brains to be highly interesting and filled with many different opinions on an assumption. At first, I thought the article was going to be a man bashing the intelligence of a woman. I don’t believe that I was entirely wrong about men thinking little of women. As I read more of the article I believe he was just trying to prove the difference in the size of the brain between men and women. The scientist did have some scientific studies to back up his assumptions of women, even though I find them to be a bit bias. Broca’s experiment did involve some testing but not all the variables were the same. Within his autopsy study it proved to be that a man has a larger brain than woman, therefore, he believed it was impossible
On the Meaning of Sex is a book written by J. Budziszewski. Budziszewski serves as a professor of government and philosophy at the University of Texas. He is the author of many different books including How to Stay Christian in College, What We Can’t Not Know, and The Line through the Heart. The student has read the book in its entirety.
If sexual orientation is something that we can’t change or choose, then how are these specific preferences such as heterosexuality and homosexuality created? How does one person progress to either heterosexuality or homosexuality? Studies showed that there were genetic factors linked to influencing sexual orientation in males before they were born by increasing the female reproductive capacity in mothers during multiple births. (Iemmole, Ciani, 2008: 393) Though that doesn’t mean that there technically is a “gay gene” that has been discovered, just that several human genome studies has suggested promising areas of research that are pointing to that direction. (Iemmole, Ciani, 2008: 393) With more
In the One-act play A Question of Sex, by Arnold Bennett, the play provides the background setting at London in the 1900th, where the main character, George Gower, and his family members live in a house with the drawing-room just outside of London. In this play, George and his wife are just having their first child giving birth with joyfulness of first time as a father. However, The Father was stuck into the depressing moment for the difficulties he is struggled with since the child was born. One of the events is that he had been informed six months ago by his rich uncle, Francis Gower, that he would give the family ten thousand pounds if the upcoming child was a baby boy. Unfortunately, the gender of the upcoming child turned out to be a baby girl instead of a baby boy, as George has been concern and fear for during that period of time. In addition, George, after tasted the experience of being the new-parent, felt extremely exhausted and fatigue for taking care of the baby, as he needed to stay awake most of the time for taking care the crying by where he has never experienced ever in his life. Eventually, he had shown the depression and anxiety due to the high tension he has bear with the past months, as his sister May and sister-in-law Helen discover himself falling asleep with weariness and disappointment, which leads to the conversation they have at the beginning of the scene.
I did like those psychologists in the video are now doing more to help these women by studying their brain and doing bone test to see how far the damage has reached.
Welcome everyone to the adolescent brain! Have you ever wondered why your older sister or your best friend is happy one minute then angry the next? Do not fret, it is a normal thing that happens to all of us once we become teenagers. a normal thing with puberty. Mood swings are things all teenagers undergo through because the hormones are in control of their body while you go through puberty. This causes the emotions to be out of whack with the rest of their body! They are all over the place; going up and down, side to side. Wanna learn more? Well then get your popcorn, get comfy, and let us dive into the truth of the adolescent brain. The adolescent brain is a rather young brain; it is not completely developed. There are a couple different

Through free association this regression brought Freud’s analysis back to the Ratmans infantile sexuality and the anal stage. The Ratman was exposed to sexual events at an early age. His premature sexual activity leads to his desire to see women naked. Freud believed that his Superego took over and he started to experience guilt ‘an uncanny feeling, as though something must happen if I thought such things, and as though I must do all sorts of things to prevent it ’. Freud enquired to what that might happen. He responds ‘that my father might die’ () This scopophilic instinct lead to conflict and repression of his desire.
I get asked this question a lot. People incorrectly assume I am "obsessed" with sex. Some even assume my theories are derived from the complicated life I had. There are assumptions that my relationship with my mother had an impact on my sex related theories. Another theory people have about me is that my obession with sex is due to the topic being a taboo at the time. This is somewhat true. I geneinly believe sex plays a large part in our psychology: our personalitities, the people we grow to become, our relationship with those around us, etc.
People who kill multiple individuals are often studied extensively to try and understand what made them reach that point of wanting to end another’s life. Although there may be no single instance in their life that made them come to this point there can be multiple factors that play into this. One man raped, murdered, and dismembers seventeen men and boys between 1978 and 1991 and the sex behavioral models all can describe how a therapist practicing these theories would analyze how the individual reached this state of psychosis.
Today’s adolescents I fear will lose sight of human connection and how that human connection creates the ability to have empathy for others. After conducting my interviews and based on how I see young people interact what I know is the human brain needs connection to develop empathy. Our brains are wired to connect with others via mirror neurons and if most communication and socializing happen through texting and social media our children are at a great risk to lose that ability to connect physically and emotionally with others. I look forward to diving into this more in my research paper that I will present in week 5.
Someone can only love you if you love yourself. This class made me retake drawing. One exercise presented in class was to do someone you are good at to help build confidence. I loved drawing portrait but for some reason I stopped once I started dating my boyfriend of 3 years. I now starting to bring that hobbies back up and its making me love myself stronger again. In one of our NPR, students also reviews media and its harmful effects on female body image. I am a healthy BMI but I constantly think I am not skinny enough, which is disappointing. I decided to unfollow the girls that made me insecure online on apps such as Instagram and twitter. I follow more body positive accounts. I found a love for fitness and health and I decided I want to feel better rather than look skinner. It made a world of difference being in the class and learning that loving yourself was not as hard as I expected.
