Similarities Between Posttraumatic Stress Disorder and Acute Stress Disorder When a traumatic event occurs, individuals are at a high risk for developing Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Acute Stress Disorder (ASD). The first similarity is both disorders follow an experience or event involving actual or threaten death or physical injury to self or others (Brewin, Andrews, Rose, & Kirk, 1999). Once the individual feels threatened, the response is the same for PTSD and ASD, which are intense fear, helplessness, and horror (Brewin et al., 1999).
