Archimedes was born in Sicily in 287 BC. His dad was an astronomer and a great mathematician named Phidias. Other than that, little is known about the early life of Archimedes and his family. Some people think that he belonged to a higher class, and that his family was related to that of Hiero II, the King of Syracuse.
In the third century, Syracuse was a place of commerce, art, and science. When he was young Archimedes developed curiosities for problem solving. When he learned all he could from his teachers, Archimedes went to Egypt to study in Alexandria. Alexander the Great claimed Alexandria in 331 BC, by Archimedes ' time it had earned a reputation for being a great place to learn and study.
Euclid was one of the very well known who lived in Alexandria prior to Archimedes ' arrival in the city. Euclid was a renowned mathematician, perhaps best remembered for collecting all of the existent Greek geometrical treatises and assembling them in a logical and systematic order in his book, “The Elements.” This compilation was fundamental to the study of geometry for over 2,000 years, and undoubtedly influenced the work of Archimedes.
After he studied in Alexandria, Archimedes went to Syracuse and went on to study thinking and inventing. A lot of apocryphals have recorded how Archimedes served King Hiero II, he would solve problems throughout the
Pythagoras was born in 570 BCE. at Samos, Ionia, a city located in Greece . His mother being Pythais and his father is Mnesarchus. Not much was known about him because of the lack of written information on him. Pythagoras received a good education during his childhood, such as reciting homer, learning poetry, and playing musical instruments. Scholars come to believe that he got his astronomy from Anaximander and his mathematical/geometry knowledge from Miletos. Overall his mentor was Thales, he was the one to encourage Pythagoras to continue his studies and travel to Egypt. He developed a strong belief in numbers/mathematics, astronomy, and philosophy.
The Ancient Greek heroes Odysseus and Theseus represent the Greek’s appreciation for having knowledge, a trait they consider to be necessary to be well rounded. Odysseus has been on the seas and voyaged for ten years since the Trojan War had ended and Athena’s anger at Odysseus has calmed down because she has always favored him due to his sharpness. The author is describing Athena’s anger towards the Greeks, “Because of the wicked way they had treated Cassandra, Athena had been angry at all the Greeks indiscriminately, but before that, during the Trojan War, she had especially favored Odysseus. she delighted in his wily mind, his shrewdness and his cunning; she was always forward to help him.” (294). Athena, the goddess of wisdom, especially loves Odysseus because of his knowledge. He is a great Greek hero who has smartness as one of his many character traits. Next, Theseus, another great hero, has just became the King of Athens because his father committed suicide due to a misinterpretation. Edith Hamilton writes, “So Theseus became king of Athens, a most wise and disinterested King. He declared to the people that he did not wish to rule over them; he wanted a people's government where all would be equal. He resigned his royal power and organized a commonwealth, building a council hall where the citizens should gather and vote.” (215). Theseus is a wise King and has great sense of understanding and knowledge on the basics of governing a city, as he organized a
Oedipus demonstrated great strengths while he lived in the city of Thebes. He was a very caring man; when his people needed aid "[he] willingly would do anything to help [them]" (Sophocles, 26). When the people of Thebes asked Oedipus to bring their land back to normal, he did everything he could to find out who was polluting the earth. Oedipus was also a very prosperous and successful man. He was the ."..Greatest of men; he held the key to the deepest mysteries; [and] Was envied by all his fellow-men for his great prosperity..."(Sophocles, 68). People from distant lands knew the name of Oedipus; he who conquered the Sphynx and helped Thebes become a flourishing city once again.
Phaedrus was told a story by his classical Greek philosopher friend Socrates. The story was about the King of great city of Egypt, Thamus. He was introduced a lot of inventions by Theuth who was known as the god of inventions. Theuth declared that his inventions would be available extensively to Egypt's people.
“Aeschylus: Athenian Youth.” [“Aeschylus (9781429807005)”]. Aeschylus (9781429807005), 8/1/2017, pp. 1-2. EBSCOhost. This article states that Aeschylus was born in 525 BCE in Eleusis, Greece to a father who was engaged in the arts.
The son of Aglaos, Eratosthenes was born in 276 BC, in Cyrene. Now part of Eratosthenes was a Greek mathematician, geographer, poet, astronomer, and music theorist. modern-day Libya. Cyrene became a place of cultivation, where knowledge blossomed. Eratosthenes would have studied in the local gymnasium, where he would have learned physical skills and social discourse as well as reading, writing, arithmetic, poetry, and music.[ Eratosthenes went to Athens to further his studies. There he was taught Stoicism by its founder, Zeno of Citium, in philosophical lectures on living a virtuous life. [9] He then studied under Ariston of Chios, who led a more cynical school of philosophy. He also studied under the head of the Platonic Academy, who was Arcesilaus
Claudius Ptolemy was a Greco- egyptian writer, which is mostly all of these, Mathematician, astronomer, geographer, astrologer, and a poet. He was very talented in many things and was inspirational to all. He was born in AD 100 in the Roman empire in egypt but they had it all wrong for a while because the astronomer Theodore Meliteniotes said Claudius was born in Ptolemais Herniou. He was thought to have died 69-70 years later in alexandria, but it is not for sure either. He lived in the Roman province of Egypt, in a city called Alexandria.
Pythagoras was one of the greatest mathematicians of all-time, developing some key points to modern algebra, and his life story starts in Greece. In 569 BCE, Pythagoras was born on the island of Samos: an island of Greece, closer to Persia than Greece itself. Pythagoras spent most of his days in his home-town, but from time to time he traveled with his father, a merchant who roamed many lands. Growing up, he was enticed by Homer's poetry, until great philosophers became of greater interest. A man by the name of Thales created a strong impression on Pythagoras, exposing him to the world of mathematics and astronomy. Hearing so much about this fellow, in 535 BCE he journeyed across the Mediterranean Sea, and south to Egypt. When he arrived there,
Archimedes was one of the greatest philosophers who lived from 287 BC to 211 BC in Syracuse. Archimedes was a physicist, astronomer, engineer and mathematician who discovered and invented machines such as the Archimedean screw, Archimedes principle, Archimedean spiral, Archimedes claw, planetarium, compound pulley system and many war machines. His greatest contributions were in geometry and his methods and ideas started the idea of calculus and finding the density of an object without damaging the object.
There is one thing that motivated Archimedes and his work, which was his family and culture. Archimedes father, Phidias, who was an astronomer, had a massive impact on Archimedes life. The standards were set high for Archimedes. Originally, Archimedes was born into the Greek scientific culture. Although, he lived in Syracuse for most of his life, he branched out his education in Alexandria, Egypt. During the 16th and 17th century
Archimedes was born in Syracuse, Greece in 287 BC and died in 212 BC. He studied at Alexandria, Egypt which at the time was considered the intellectual hub of the world. It was established by Euclid, another Greek mathematician also known as ‘the Father of Geometry.’ Archimedes later returned to Syracuse after having completed his formal education and spent most of his life in Syracuse, Sicily. Though little is known about his life, his love for pure mathematics and geometry was evident.
Subsequent to the conquest of Egypt by Alexander the Great, the ancient Greeks established possibly the greatest center of learning at the time in Alexandria. Indeed, history purports that perhaps this great library rivaled even the great library in Athens, especially considering the fact that the Alexandrian library produced such significant mathematical figures as Archimedes and Euclid, the works of whom likely depended on the earlier works of great Greek mathematicians like Thales and Pythagoras (Lahanas, 2016). Although even those preceding mathematicians likely expounded upon the mathematical methodologies and computational techniques developed in earlier Babylonian and Egyptian civilizations. Still, there can be no doubt that modern mathematics,
Parmenides was born in Elea city. His philosophy school is named after this. This city was situated in a section of western Italy which was a colony of Greek at that moment. The date of his birth is rather unclear, but it was nearly surely between 515 and 540 B.C.His family was rich and controlled a high societal position. This permitted Parmenides to pay attention to academic and educational searches instead of the ordinary work or military recruitment of the inferior classes. Parmenidesperhaps was a student of a certain giant of early Greek thought, Xenophanes. The latter was a famous poet, theologian, and social censor. While it is not clear whether Parmenides knew Xenophanes individually; there is no uncertainty he was wide-open to and influenced by the elder work of the thinker (Valentine).
Sophocles was born in modern day Athens in 496 BC. His father was a wealthy merchant which enabled Sophocles to live life comfortably. He had the luxury of receiving a conventional aristocratic education. He would become well-known as a famous playwright throughout history. However there are different aspects of his life not as well-known. Experiences in Sophocles’ life influenced his written works which portrayed him as a politician and religious man (“Sophocles”).
