“How can mirrors be real if our eyes aren’t real?” This is something the great philosopher Jaden Smith tweeted a few years ago when trying to come to grips with his sense of reality. Many people made fun of him for nonsensical tweet because he is just some rapper that is known for his silliness, but this is a type of question that many of us ask ourselves every now and then. We often question what matter is, and how the reality of matter affects us. This was the question trying to be answered in Jan Westerhoff in his short introduction of reality. Jan came to the conclusion that trying to answer this question was a never ending cycle of why. So if matter doesn’t matter do our decisions in life have actual consequences? The recent rise of fake …show more content…
The safety of our society is how safe we are from crimes like homicide, harassment, etc. This aspect of our society is vulnerable to nihilism because of the rise of fake news. One example is referenced from a PBS Newshour article written last year of a crazed gunman believing that a pedophile ring ran by the government was stationed at a pizza place called, Comet Ping Pong. The gunman had learned of this conspiracy theory online where he had read fake news causing him to barge into the pizza place with a gun threatening the people inside. This incident is an example of the violence that can be created by fake news online. Even though these were just accusations and ideas that had no basis in reality, lack of care of other people’s safety caused that gunman to threaten a person’s safety because of his belief that his truth is the only truth. The lack of empathy is a product of the nihilism created after the gunman believed his own reality of the world to be true after he was bombarded with fake news. Another example of fake news causing disregard for safety would be from another incident from the same article where a woman was accused of having Ebola after a trip to Africa. This woman has harassed by random people, almost losing her job in the medical field, and her husband actually losing his job. This all happened because of a false narrative having caused panic of an outbreak of Ebola after they lost control of said narrative. The safety of their livelihood and privacy was invaded of false narratives and fake news. This was all caused because people didn’t care about the moral principle of not messing with a person’s life and safety because of fake news fueling people’s personal realities. Actions based on personal beliefs without care for people’s safety causes nihilism in society, thus destroying it. Fake news can cause our society to threaten
When discussing reality, several questions emerge regarding what reality is. A reality, "the real situation that exist," (Merriam-Webster.com) consists of two forms-perceived reality and actual reality. One spends his or her entire life trying to decipher the difference between the two forms; yet to truly understand reality, it is essential that you comprehend both. Plato 's "Allegory of the Cave," Dick Gregory 's "Shame" and Frederick Douglass ' "Learning to Read and Write" illustrate examples of both perceptions. Furthermore, how conceptualization of reality helps establish who one will become.
People seem to think that everything that happens to them everyday is real. The question is, though, “What is real?”. Is everything you see everyday really real or is it fake? We might see fantasies that other people or machines have created for us. Maybe we are the ones that are not enlightened yet. Numerous essays and films have been produced on this subject. One essay is “The Allegory of the Cave” written by Plato in 360 B.C. Also, the movie The Matrix was filmed in 1999. Even though many differences can be drawn between “The Allegory of the Cave” and The Matrix, there are many similarities as well.
Although Steven Crichley doesn’t fully come out and say that our country isn’t as great as it used to be, in his article, “Violence is Who We Are,” He does list situations that have increasingly become more of a problem. For example, “It used to be that a 12- year- old boy might sneak a look at his father’s Playboy magazine…. Now a 12-year-old can view the most extreme pornogaphy imaginable.” Because of the use of the internet incorrectly, looking at porn has become increasingly a larger problem. Another problem that is increasing, is the homicides and shootings in Pittsburgh and around the world. “Shootings and murders in the
Have you ever questioned the nature of your reality? Questioned if you are completely able to see from the outside looking in? Philosopher Plato, presents his view of reality through an allegory to explain the concept, and how we gain knowledge of our reality. Two other philosophers that I will mention both touch base with their description of reality and how it relates to Plato’s conception. All three of these philosophers believe knowledge is attainable through acts of realization and simple knowledge, and each philosopher presents his/her main point of reality through different ways of attaining it. I will further mention the relevance of Plato’s theory in today’s world and why I believe it to be valuable.
Sometimes, it seems that the best representation of fiction is reality, not the other way
In everyday life, people are faced with thought provoking questions regarding the legitimacy of their observations. For some, it can be mind blowing metaphysical questions, for example, is what people observe actually present and real. Then for others, it can be minor issues like whether or not a certain person is who they say they are or if their appearance matches their personality. Nonetheless, appearances can be deceiving. Often time creating illegitimate realities that can influence people’s decisions and perception.
Theistic existentialism begins with acceptance of all the propositions of theism. It’s main differences concern human nature and our relationship to God and the cosmos.
The fear that something unpredictable can happen at any time has been injected into our society. Whether it be a terrorist attack or a school shooting, it’s practically impossible for anyone to see these incidents occur. Due to these situations, the media and corporations have our society almost paranoid. In Michael Moore’s documentary, Bowling for Columbine, we can see that our society isn’t one that is usually violent or dark, but it’s the fear the drives the American history of Gun issues and shootings.
One of the most fundamental questions in philosophy is the one of appearance vs. reality. We find ourselves asking the question of what is genuinely “real,” and what is viewed merely as just an “appearance,” and not real? It becomes difficult when we assume there is a difference in the two to determine which is which. Generally, what we label as “real” is regarded as external
A long time ago the difference between perception and reality was defined as the act of understanding in contrast to the act of being real. Reality could be tricky; most of us including myself depending on scenarios of our lives tend to give in to ideas which are not applicable to reality as a whole. The best example of this is written in the short story “All Over” by Guy de Maupassant. In which his main character Lormerin is very self conscious and narcissistic also Lise de Vance, a former old love plays a big role in hurting Lormerin ego and opening his eyes by showing him, his real self. Many would say that when reality knocks it could be harsh and confusing. In the next couple of
We think that the things we see and otherwise are real. However, we are incorrect because the things that we perceive are mere
What we think is reality will ultimately become our reality if we believe certain things about an individual; he/she begins acting in exactly that way.
What is real and what is really real? Philosophy is interesting and can be really confusing at times. The film I will be analyzing with philosophical views does a good job on giving examples of the nature of reality and the Methodological doubt. I will show by giving examples of Descartes rule that everything is to be doubted and Plato’s allegory of the cave.
Reality is not an objective thing that is imposed upon us, but is created by us. Reality does not exist externally but internally, as each individual or group interprets it, and is always changing. Due to these concepts sociologists often speak about the “social construction of reality” which is essential to understand when attempting to explain human social behavior. Since realty is the basis of people’s actions, W. I. Thomas states, “If people define situations as real, they are real in their consequences”. The “social construction of reality”, human social behavior and W. I. Thomas’s statement are three concepts that fit hand in hand and are important when trying to explain one another.
Violence has spread rapidly and has affected many innocent civilians in various urban cities and towns across America. According to a 1992 poll by Newsweek out of 1,000 people surveyed, 50.4% backs and 29,9% whites fell victims of violent crimes. (Graham) More and more people are becoming victims of such crimes that can easily affect a mass amount of people, fortunately, there is a less amount of innocent civilians of homicide and 52 white males out of 100,000 were victims of homicide (Graham). Soon, kids will kill each other and society in the future will be completely washed out.
