Over time, schools have made efforts in order to make the curriculum more rigorous than in the past. Unfortunately, because of high-stakes testing and the United States’ students scoring lower than our global competitors in math, science, and reading, teachers feel more pressured than ever to ensure that students retain the information that they are taught. In order to achieve this, many teachers have began to give students summer homework to be completed before the beginning of the next school year. Although several studies have shown that students do not retain as much information over summer break, it is questionable to determine whether or not summer homework’s advantages outweigh its benefits. Summer has traditionally been a time of relaxation and an opportunity have out-of-classroom experiences.Summer assignments should not be given; they do not accomplish what they aim to, burden parents and students, and hinder students from having enriching experiences during their school vacation.
Summer assignments are intended to help students retain more information from the school year over summer vacation; according to a Duke University review of more than 175 studies, there is little or no correlation between homework and standardized test scores or

If students have summer homework, they may not be able to do all the things that they plan to do during their time off from school. Additionally, many of these experiences are educational and students are able to grow individually and socially, allowing them to become better scholars. Many high school students use summers in order to work and save money for college, if there is an excessive amount of homework given, this would deprive such teenagers from saving for their future. Education is extremely important;however, there are many life skills to be learned outside of the
The second reason why summer school is an ideal option for many students is that is allows a student the opportunity to have a spare in the upcoming school year. Students, like myself, who are heavily focused on math and science are given a heavy load of equations to memorize and homework to accomplish. By making use of a spare, students are able to use this time to enhance their studies. Students would have more time to catch up on homework, study for tests and improve their
Everyday, when the school day is over, students are most likely to get homework to do when they get home. This can be a lot or a little amount of homework, but it can still effect the students the way they are. These effects can be good, bad, or nothing, so today, we take a look whether homework should be assigned or not.
Along with the comeback of school we need to “Pity our poor teachers who spend every September reprogramming children to do their homework, spending hours on remedial lessons and waiting until overtired children readjust to regular bedtimes” says McFeatters. She made me realize that schooling lacks over the summer and forgets to stick for the arrival of school. As stated, teenage workers’ jobs have become taken by those whom are unsuccessful adults trying to make a living. Being a teenager, I plan on trying to get a job, but my education is also in my hands of retaining throughout a summer of jobs and even summer school to keep up with my schooling to get into more colleges with an overloaded class agenda. Year-round school would keep up with my education, and there would be more breaks to find jobs here and there to keep up with extra curricular, or even my car.
Life as a middle school student will be totally different from the high school life. These are two different things and way more things will be expected from each and every student now that we are in high school. It will not be as easy as middle school was because when coming to the high school students will have to face hard challenges that might throw them off because they are not use to it. After a couple of week of experiencing high school it will start to get a little easier. Do not to expect high school to go by easy as middle school. If my word could get to the upcoming 8th graders about life at Spartanburg High School I would warn them about academics, sports, and friendships.
Summer school encourages physical activity and routines. It helps lazy and unmotivated kids because they maybe have to do exercise in some classes and maybe go outside and play sports or something else that makes them move. Encourages kids to get out of the house because they might get
Students and parents should begin to think about college when the student is in middle school or late grade-school. Beginning the college process early can prevent stressing at the last-minute and informs the student of all of their options. Even if the student is not looking at a specific college, they should start to learn the importance of college and how their life will change. Students should speak to a college guidance counselor about their future and know what colleges are looking for and how to build their résumé.
To start, everyone goes to Elementry school then to middle school but have to ever wonder how different they are. Elementry school is so fun with playgrounds and after school activities. But when you here about Middle school I was so excited to go. I found out that it is so exciting and different. Some differences and similarities between Middle School and Elementary School include the size of school, number of grades, and classes. These are some of the many things Middle School so enjoyable.
You need to get ready for middle school. You might need help take my advice for stuff you need. You can go to stores and get some school stuff or clothes and maybe even some jackets. If not at least you need some school supplies for school. That is the most thing you need to be worried about.
According to Brittany Chu, relaxing in the summer helps kids recharge and get ready for the fall upcoming. The most important thing is that kids get to relax from the stress filled school year. Most kids at the end of the school year are jumping out of there seat, but kids with no summer don’t get that felling. Some kids have to get jobs in the summer and if they don’t have summer they don’t get to they might have to pay for tuition (Chu). As a student for me I use the summer brake to just get my energy back kick back and relax sleep in I would just miss that. In addition, Chu says Most kids just want to sit back on their couch and be a potato but going to school in the summer doesn’t let
No one wants homework over the summer. I see summer as a time to forget about school, and just have fun. I think most people feel the same, but despite how most people feel some of my teacher assigned homework over the summer. As you could image, I was highly upset about this. I was even thinking about not doing my assignment, but I knew that I didn’t want to start the year off failing. Little did I know that by the end of the summer my life would be changed, and I would be a new person. All thanks to Sandra Cisneros.
Math used to be my favorite subject in elementary school. It used to be so simple where the equations used were clear to understand and proving your answer by showing work did not take too much time. Going into middle school things changed and became way too complicated. You had to learn equations to use for different problems and know which situation called for which equation to use. I got my first taste of Algebra in middle school. Things became more difficult in high school. I struggled in Geometry, Algebra II, Pre-Calculus, and the science classes that were based on math. Physics was the hardest class because of the equations. It didn’t help that I could not see how to apply the math in the real world while being a teenager. In
Towards the end of my sophomore year I went through some personal problems that caused my grades to drop. It was unexpected and I was devastated due to the fact that I set out to reach my goal of a higher GPA that year. The shock of my grades only worsened the situation and slowly I began giving up. I maintained average grades with the help of my teachers and I set a few goals for myself. My goals included, a GPA of 3.5 or above, at least a 20 on my ACT, and to overall try to better my mental state. With hard work, I was able to raise my grades and have above a 3.0 GPA by the end of my sophomore year. The start of junior year was my chance to accomplish my goals, but I was faced with even more challenges. Same as before, my grades began to
Middle school is a difficult time for everyone, but it was especially hard for me. In the 7th grade a rumor began spreading that I had a “death list.” On it was supposedly every person in the school in the order I would kill them. This was of course not true. Most likely just a reference to a popular anime Death Note, in which a high school boy finds a book, and when someone’s name is written inside, that person would die of a heart attack within 40 seconds. I obviously did not have this book. I was just an awkward 13 year old with social anxieties who liked odd things. Nevertheless the entire school believed it to be true. Throughout the time that awful rumor was destroying my life only one person stayed by my side. Angelica. She would assure
After graduating at the top of my 8th grade class and being named the valedictorian, my future appeared to be bright. By this time, I already envisioned having a career in the military. The road to getting to the top of my class was by no means easy. The mental strain placed on me through bullying was immeasurable. I knew what I wanted to do in life, but being degraded by the people who were supposed to stand by my side as friends took away a lot of my motivation and confidence. How could the same people I trust steal things from me and harass me? The effects of these incidents were displayed throughout my ninth-grade year in high school
The majority of students have, at one point or another, wished for less homework. For some student’s homework is not a big issue but for other students it can take hours and even days to do all their homework. That wasted time could be used for enjoyment or learning life skills instead of homework. Nine in ten high school students reported feeling stressed about homework (Galloway 4). So, should students get less homework? Yes, students should receive less homework because it improves their well-being by reducing stress and its impacts on health, increasing leisure time, and showing that homework does not affect grades significantly.
