The Sunjata is named after the originator of the thirteenth-century Mali Empire. The heroic story relates the adventures and the life of Sunjata (otherwise called Sundiata or Son-Jara) from his youth when, as a result of a curse, he could not walk only crawl, to his banishment with his family, and lastly to his turning into the triumphant King of the Mandinka and extending his empire. There are numerous variations to the Sunjata epic, yet the essence of the story continues to stay the same throughout all stories. Sunjata is the child of the King of the Mandinka, Maghan Kung Fatta, and one of his spouses, Sukulung, an agnostic with a supernatural mind. Sunjata's ultimate rival is his older half brother, Dankaran Tuma. Dankaran Tuma's mother puts a curse on Sunjata that leaves him unable walk; he has no choice but to crawl on all fours until his adolescence, and it was at this time his mother provided him with a staff made from a sacred tree and orders him to rise. Throughout the story Niane uses the strength and weaknesses of his characters to show the importance of destiny and fate. The character that holds his name to the story, Sundiata, is the son of King Maghan Kon Katta and the “buffalo” woman. Sundiata was prophesized to be a great leader and to save the people of Mali. Sundiata must go through a series of tests and trials, before fulfilling his destiny and taking throne of Mali. He learned how to walk and started exercising every day. In just a few years, he changed himself into a strong warrior. He was determined to free Mali from the Sosos and fled into exile. While in exile, Sundiata became famous as a feared warrior and fighter. After several years, he decided to return to Mali in order to make Mali a better place. The people of Mali were tired of the high taxes that the Soso rulers asked of them and wanted to revolt.
Three miles east of Sunray Park and Casino in Farmington, New Mexico there is a little structure similar to a shed secluded by gloomy perished trees and has a dirt road covered with gravel leading up to it and other residences that include trailers and houses where people live, horse corrals where horses are rounded up, and farming land for growing crops.
