Language is the way people communicate. A person’s choice of words, tone, and even body language all make up his or her language. Language is incredibly important, especially during a first encounter. It is said that language limits thought and thought is dependent upon language. When two people first meet, it is their language that helps both people to form their own opinions of each other and can make or break the bond between these two people. There are many works of literature that show the importance of language as a major literary theme. One of these works is Sure Thing by David Ives. This play emphasizes the significance of language in a light-hearted, humorous account of two strangers that meet in a local café and begin to talk to each other in the hopes of obtaining a date. In Sure Thing, Ives uses many literary techniques to portray the value of language as a main theme within his play, including minimalism, symbolism, and repetition. In Sure Thing, Ives’ minimalistic approach to the setting is crucial to the development of the characters and the play. Not only are there only two characters, Bill and Betty, within the drama, but there is also hardly anything else on the stage …show more content…
Throughout the play, there is a bell that rings every time Bill or Betty say something that would make their conversation begin to falter. After the bell rings, Bill and Betty get the chance to recant their earlier statements and say something else that might intrigue the other person more. The ringing bell symbolizes a fresh start and a second chance to make a good impression. This ties into Ives’ theme of language being paramount because the bell rings when Bill or Betty use language that is not beneficial to their end goal - getting to know each other and going out on a date. However, because of the bell, they each get endless opportunities to change their language to successfully meet their end

The more we understand language variations, the more we will be able to connect with anyone in the world. This mean we all understand social justice in the world. Baldwin says “It goes without saying, that language is also a political instrument, means, and proof of power” (45). This quote is important to our understanding of language variations and social justice because language is power. Language is the most striking key to personality so without it you don't have anything. Meaning without language how would we express ourselves to one another.
Shakespeare was very specific, in 1603, about his choice of words when he wrote the play, “Othello”. The three language devices – “words as power”, “words as character” and “words as conversation” with the audience – are used to create characters’ identities and fates, and also to drive the plot of the play (Krieger, 2012).

First thing that this story portrayed is timing. Timing is an important part in everything you do whether it is work, dating, or just living life. Throughout this story the bell kept going off because neither the girl nor guy could get the right timing. They would say the right things but not really at the right time, or they would say the wrong things at the right time. This part of the meaning shows us that timing can be everything, it can make or break any situation.
First preformed in 1988, “Sure Thing”, takes place in a Café. The play has two characters; the readers are given an equal description of both, which is their names and approximated age. The fact that both characters are equally described, gives a constancy of role equality improvements; which is also an aspect portray throughout the entire story as both characters continue to equally change their thoughts in order to become sympathetic with each other, until they achieve the agreeing point. Furthermore, the image of women portray by Betty, the female character, is one of a more self-thinking, valuable woman. For instance when Bill gives a well, and positive opinion about Faulkner’s works and she simply says, “I think it’s pretty boring”(Ives, 1).
Something Socrates said about happiness was similar to that of Daniel Gilbert. Socrates believed that in order to be happy and live a good life, you need to live a life of contemplation and self evaluation. He worded it as developing the soul, which basically means work on yourself and just be able to reflect, and develop your ideas. I believe this is similar to Gilbert because they both understood the importance of self reflection in leading you to happiness. For Gilbert, reflecting on what you’ve experienced and talking to other people will help you determine your own definition of what makes you happy. This is similar to gilbert because they both involve self reflection to develop ideas. A difference between the two however, is that Daniel
Have you ever heard the song, “I Can Hear the Bells Ringing?” This song can be thought of as a love song. Celia Garth can hear the bells ringing the first time she kissed Jimmy. The sound of the bells represent the love Celia and Jimmy share for each other. When Marion and his men defeat the Redcoats they take the towns prize possession. The British do not just strip the town of Charleston of who they are, but the love Celia and Jimmy gets taken away also. Celia and the citizens of Charleston hold onto the idea of the bell like people in today's society hold onto the idea of having their phones.

“Among Strangers”, a short story written by Jude Dibia, depicts just how critical language, one of the most important aspects of culture, is to a one’s life.
In the world today, there are more and more multicultural people who can speak different languages; and they need to choose different tongues to correspond to the immediate community they belong. Language makes people remember their own cultures and contribute to their own identity. In “Mother Tongue,” a short story written by Amy Tan; she strongly narrates the stories about her different experiences and life comprehensions based on varying types of English she speaks throughout life. Wandering on two different languages; Amy discovers the importance and power of language: “the way it can evoke an emotion, a visual image, a complex idea, or a simple truth” (Tan 38). As human beings, language is the tool that contains the mighty powers; it forcefully affects people’s lives, personality, and lifestyles. Moreover, language is the “bridge” of communication between people. However, for Amy, the views on mother’s language are changing from the sense of shame into pride; as she is feeling the effects that two different types of English are giving to her as well as their respective symbols in her mind.
While the main purpose of language is to communicate, Joseph Heller creates the world in which language loses its function as a tool for communication in favour of an
