Imagine a world where every move you make is being watched. It’s not that hard is it? Maybe because it’s now a reality.
Surveillance is an extremely prevalent issue in today’s society. Whether it be through CCTV in shopping centres or even through your phone. In George Orwell’s novel ‘Nineteen-Eighty Four’, surveillance is seen everywhere, and is practically how the world runs. In many instances main character, Winston Smith, is described to be avoiding certain spots in his home to be hidden from all of the cameras. The main being the ‘telescreen’, which is Orwell’s version of the modern television.

If this doesn’t scream an invasion of privacy, I don’t know what does. This is the exact type of thing that is portrayed in George Orwell’s ‘Nineteen-Eighty Four’. The government has the ability to see where we are all the time just through the apps on our phones, just like the telescreens in the novel.
Our privacy doesn’t matter anymore. Our rights are being curbed in the name of anti-terrorism, through Government surveillance and information building on each and every civilian. Their paranoia for revolution has turned into tyranny on the masses. Our liberty is at a cliff here. Our trust in the Government shouldn’t be so strong, for example in ‘Nineteen-Eighty Four’, the government controlling people is the telescreen which can never be turned off, because of always being watched Winston feels the pressure to always watch his movements and to always stay in correct behavior. Which is what happens today… Most people see a camera and automatically feel they need to change the way they act as they are being watched. This is seen majorly in the novel when Winston meets up with Julia, they at first refrain from speaking to each other in fear that someone would be listening in, but eventually give in and be honest and open with each
