In “A Rose for Emily”, Faulkner uses suspense and mystery to narrate the story. He describes six main characters who are Emily Grierson, Mr. Grierson, Homer Barron, Tobe and Colonel Sartoris and Judge Stevens. Faulkner narrates the story by hiding himself behind it, by using the common pronoun “we”. Emily Grierson who is one the major characters is described as the one who suffers the most in this story. Faulkner uses sympathy while describing Emily as an absent, a “cut off the outside World” person, she is almost not related as a human being. Not only because of his good look, but also because of his fun personality and good sense of humor. Despite his many admirers, he is more interesting in Emily and start building a relationship with her which will eventually make him regret the day he met her. Homer is an outgoing person, who brings joy and fun into Emily’s life. Moreover, even though Homer was a good looking man, he was seen as a poor man in the community, some people dislike him because he is a day laborer and the fact that he was going out with Emily would become a scandal because she was more seen as a respectable, higher social class woman. However, Homer brings many changes to town, he changes the world of the town and he is represented as modernity and industrialization. She cannot not let go of the man that has monitored her every move. "We remembered all the young men her father had driven away, and we knew that with nothing left, she would have to cling to that which had robbed her." She refuses to bury her father, not because she cannot bear to part with him, but because she refuses to let go of the man that she now has complete control over. When Emily is forced to part with her father's body she sets off to find his replacement.
Some of the townspeople considered this as an inappropriate match for her and said, “That even grief could not cause a real lady to forget oblesse oblige.” Emily could not stand loosing anyone else and murdered Homer. She had missed so many chances of marrying anyone because of her father, so the only resort she had left was to kill homer and hang on to him forever before he would leave her life like everyone else. Once Emily had passed away, the townspeople went inside her house and saw that Homer’s body was there in the bed. Astonishingly they saw “the second pillow (had an) indention of a head… and saw a long strand of iron-gray hair.” Faulkner had described Emily’s hair as iron-gray so it could be assumed that Emily had been lying next to homer all this time.
Once it becomes apparent that Homer is not the marrying type and that he represents everything that she is against, Emily murders him with rat poison. The protagonist, Emily Grierson, is an eccentric lady that encounters tragedies throughout her life. Unexpectedly, she meets Homer Barron whom she considers the love of her life. In this tragic love story, Faulkner reveals the true identities of these individuals. The main character, Emily Grierson, in the story “A Rose for Emily”, is portrayed as a dynamic character, an anti-hero in the story, and a mysterious citizen in the small town of Jefferson.
Emily simply wanted to be freed from her father past control and from being a proper lady. After what look like she was going to get married, her boyfriend Homer just disappeared. After Homer's disappearance Emily was not the same. She barely left the house and kept aging terribly. At the end she died and the towns folk discovered that she had kept Homer’s body and a head.
In her mind she is wanting to find someone who she could spend the rest of her life with but Homer is just wanting a fling and not a commitment. This is something that the citizens of Jefferson will worry about, as they feel that they must look after Emily since her father passing. The townspeople are like her parents and feel like it is in their best interest to look after her. This could make the reader show sympathy for Emily, rather than disliking her.
William Faulkner has done a wonderful work in his essay “A Rose for Emily.” Faulkner uses symbols, settings, character development, and other literary devices to express the life of Emily and the behavior of the people of Jefferson town towards her. By reading the essay, the audience cannot really figure out who the narrator is. It seems like the narrator can be the town’s collective voice. The fact that the narrator uses collective pronoun we supports the theory that the narrator is describing the life of “Miss Emily” on behalf of the townspeople. Faulkner has used the flashback device in his essay to make it more interesting. The story begins with the portrayal of Emily’s funeral and it moves to her past and at the end the readers realize that the funeral is a flashback as well. The story starts with the death of Miss Emily when he was seventy-four years old and it takes us back when she is a young and attractive girl.

In William Faulkner’s “A Rose for Emily” the story is revolved around the character Emily Grierson. The story is told by the townspeople where Emily lives. These people are attending her funeral and pitching in memories and tales they remember from Emily’s life. It is through the collective voices and opinions of the crowd that the reader is able to interpret Emily’s struggles. With Emily Grierson’s choices the reader can tell that she is a dependant woman, with psychotic tendencies, and does not take the thought of change and rejection lightly.
Miss Emily is seen purchasing items with Homers initials on them and people began to think that they were getting married. When Homer came back into town after being away he was seen entering Miss Emily’s house and was never seen again. Faulkner leaves the reader to wonder what happened to Homer. "Through out the story the narrator uses "we" instead of I revealing to us the way the townspeople judge Emily" (Madden 1988). The narrator thinks back in time throughout the story remembering particular events that occurred in the past. This is important to the reader in that it helps aid the understanding of how the townspeople viewed Emily. The narrator as one of the townspeople viewed Miss Emily as impervious, tranquil, and perverse. If the story had been narrated by anyone else, it may not have been as easy for the reader to completely understand. "With this spectator as the narrator, describing the events of the story through his eyes, one can detect a general impression of Emily" (Madden 1987). The view of the narrator is beneficial in understanding the things that Emily goes through. Also toward the end of the story the narrator gives the reader a feeling if sorrow and pity for Emily.
