I am determined to help building a better Indonesia by making it more sustainable. Sustainability is vital because natural resources have been the main source of conflict in Indonesia. Indonesia has 132.9 million hectare of forest out of 192.2 million hectare land, which means almost nearly 70 percent of Indonesian people dealt in natural resources management issues. According to Robecosam's Countries Sustainable Ranking in 2013, Indonesia was ranked 56 (out of 59 countries, with the first country being the most sustainable). Indonesia scored very low in environmental aspect, which has come to no surprise viewing Indonesia's deforestation rate at 1.08 million hectare/year. This is the repercussion of Indonesia natural resources wealth …show more content…
WARSI has helped established 13 Village Forest establishment in Jambi and West Sumatera Province as a scheme from community-based forest management model. Although we have succeeded in assisting 13 villages to secure their forest, yet there still numerous villages and many customary people of whose forest still in verge of uncertainty. As much as we tried to work on the Village Forest scheme, in the end we have to wait for the Ministry of Forestry to formulate it that could take up until two years, even more. Influencing the government policy by is utmost challenging because there are things that cannot be reached without legal authority. Often we could only push as much but the policy remains the same because we lack of power. Thus, my professional goal is to be able to sit in governmental position to be able to affect the decision-making process so that the government could be more effective in conducting environmental and development policy. My plan in working in this NGO is to be able know the structure and problem of Indonesian government from the outside. After a year working in the NGO, I wish to pursue my master education in the sector sustainability and development. Courses with cutting-edge learning toolkits, as well as hands-on experience will equip me with the knowledge and skills necessary to be more competitive and competent. Learning about the emerging concept of
Sustainability from a strategic business perspective is the potential for the long-term well-being of the natural environment, including all biological entities, as mutually beneficial interactions among nature and individuals, organizations, and business strategies. (O.C Ferrell, Fraedrich, Ferrell, 2015). Business sustainably is often defined as managing the triple bottom line – a process by which companies manage their financial, social and environmental risks, obligations and opportunities. These three impacts are sometimes referred to as profits, people and planet. (Business sustainability definition from financial times lexicon, no date). This essay will discuss the idea of sustainability being an important element within a businesses and its core strategies and the importance of it within different businesses. Secondly, this study will look at how different stakeholders are affected and influenced by sustainability as this could be seen as a catalyst to improving the environment as a whole and. Then this study will look at how businesses not focusing
According to the United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), an estimated 18 million acres of forest, which is roughly the size of the country of Panama, are lost each year. Undeniably, the deteriorating environmental situation, the increasingly severe pollution of the atmosphere, and water, the severe damage to the living environment of wild animals and plants, the extinction of many species, the deforestation and the transitional mining of mineral resources caused contrary facts. Human existence and development have brought real and more serious potential threats. The scarcity of environmental resources is manifested gradually. As environmental issues are becoming a bottleneck restricting economic growth, it is imperative that lousy effect governed the environment.
Deforestation is the destruction of a wide area of forest land into a cleared land that is used for a variety of reasons. The impact on the environment from cutting down, burning and damaging forests is very detrimental and there are severe consequences for the environment and future generations because of deforestation. According to the United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organization approximately 7.3 million hectares of forests are being destroyed per year in the world (Bradford, 2015). In this essay, I will explore the impact that deforestation on the environment and I will also look at the actions that are being taken to prevent deforestation. There are various reasons why deforestation is occurring despite its negative effects on the environment. Deforestation can cause very serious environmental problems such as climate change, flooding, loss of habitats as well as others.
As you can see deforestation is man made, not intentionally man made, but instead intentionally made for industrialization. Predominantly Indonesia has the highest rate of deforestation in the world and also is the world's third-largest producer of greenhouse gases behind China and the US, with 85% of its emissions coming from forest destruction and degradation (theG). The statistics as you can see are more alarming than perceived in the media and it is extremely imperative to help regulate and help with this mast tragedy of the
When I was five years old I began school. In Kindergarden we learned basic things like letters, numbers, and how not to be fully engulfed in flames. For some reason, 2004 was the height of anti-fire education in Missouri and before I knew how to tie my shoes I knew that if I ever was ablaze, to cover my face, fall to my knees, and roll back and fourth. This is what my institution placed serious value upon and because I was a student of that institution I also placed serious value upon it. The same idea must be applied to a university's teaching of environmental sustainability. This is discussed in David Orr's "What is Education For?" Through choosing a curriculum a university chooses what it places value onto, by making the environment a priority it showcases to the future generations that environmental wellness is an important responsibility for them to take ownership.
Why anti-deforestation pledge is important? According to the United Nations summit is the perpetuation of what all types of forests and forest lands do of roles and multiple tasks. The basis of this work due to significant weakness in policies and approaches and mechanisms adopted for the development of ecological, economic, social and cultural multi-trees roles and forests and forest land.
The reason that I chose this program for continuing my education is to work with NGOs and foundations that concentrate on empowering girls and women, or founding NGOs in this related field by myself in the near future.
Deforestation is one of the most significant issues of our time; considerable measures must be taken to prevent further pillaging of our unique forest resource.
Like any other public organization, diverse interest groups try to influence the Forest Service. In order to improve the way the Forest Service (Forestry) prioritizes who makes what kind of input to their leadership, and how different stakeholder groups communicate with one another and with local Forest Service, offices present an opportunity to improve the organization at the local and institutional level.
The main concept of chapter 15, Equality and sustainability, is how equality and policies can decrease carbon emissions (). One key question the authors are asking is would making the necessary cuts in carbon emissions mean reducing present material living standards below what people in the rich world cold accept as an adequate quality of life? One of the answers for these questions was given by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and it possible. Countries with less green and fuel-efficient technology to countries with most can all achieve this life style. One way the authors also talk about controlling the carbon emissions is with individual carbon rations. Everyone would get a certain amount of carbon rations and if the poor had left-over carbon
Recently, the rise in the production value of palm oil has taken a large toll on some of the planet's oldest rainforests. Much of the rainforest has been demolished for growth of palm trees farmed for their palm oil. Palm oil plantations have taken over nearly one million acres of rainforests (“Palm Oil Plantations are Blamed for Many Evils”). In areas such as the Leuser ecosystem, there is an illegal clearing of rainforests destroying the homes of native people and the habitats that many unique animals call home (“As Palm Oil Farms Expand, it’s a Race to Save Indonesia's Orangutans.”). Farmers are forced to continue clearing land to produce enough palm oil to reach economic demands. In fact, the palm oil industry is the world’s largest cause of deforestation (“Dear EarthTalk”). From 2009 through 20011 over One million two hundred thousand acres of forest was destroyed (‘‘Palm Oil is Killing the Sumatran Tiger”) Dr. Ian Singleton claimed: “The road from Medan to here is kind of the only road out of Medan that’s not palm oil as
There are more than 70 billion land animals that are raised for human consumption each year. There are roughly 36 football fields of forest that are hacked, burned and destroyed every minute to meet the demands of our population. Indonesia was named the “Fastest Forest Destroyer” in 2008 by the Guinness World Records book. In Indonesia, as their forest habitat is cleared, endangered species such as the orangutan, Borneo elephant and Sumatran tiger are being pushed closer to extinction. Smallholders and indigenous people who have inhabited and protected the forest for generations are often brutally driven from their land. In Indonesia, more than 700 land conflicts are related to the industrial agriculture. The
Sustainability development has three components: environment, society, and economy. If you consider the three to be overlapping circles of the same size, the area of overlap in the center is human well-being. As the environment, society, and economy become more aligned, the area of overlap increases, and so does human well-being. Therefore, education for sustainable development (ESD) is the use of education as a tool to achieve sustainability. Simply put, ESD is a way to make the world a safer, healthier, and more livable place for us and future generations (McKeown, 2002, pgs 7-9).
In the United States, we consume more energy from oil than from any other energy source. In 2014 the total amount of petroleum consumed in the United States was about 19 million barrels per day. As we look into making the world a more eco friendly environment, I ask the question; what are some alternatives of oil and the effects of the alternative.
The concept of sustainable development has become a major topic among intellectuals from various fields. Sustainable development has gone through various changes in its definitions and at present does not have a commonly accepted definition. The origination of the concept of sustainable development is debatable. In 1974 at a conference on Science and Technology for Human Development by the World Council of Churches the concept of a “sustainable society” is believed to have been first noted. This early concept focused on equitable distribution of scarce resources and the need for democratic decision making. In 1980 the currently used term of sustainable development emerged in the
