Synoptic Gospel Of Mark

“The Gospel According to Mark” is a short story written by Jorge Luis Borges. The author grew up in Latin America, specifically Buenos Aires, which is mentioned throughout the length of this story. The short story introduces the reader to a character named, Balthasar Espinosa, who is a medical student attending school in Buenos Aires. Espinosa would end up in Los Alamos and read the gospel to a family during a treacherous rain storm, but in the end it would result in tragedy for our protagonist. The setting of the story is primarily set in Los Alamos, a country land, and during Espinosa’s stay a heavy rainstorm would force him to form a bond with the Gutres family. The setting in the country. where it is more secluded, would allow unfathomable actions to occur that normally would not develop in a metropolitan city such as Buenos Aires. The inclusion of a heavy rainstorm and isolation from a large population ultimately led to our protagonist’s demise.

All of the Gospels describe the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus, but each author illustrates the stories differently. Scholars believe Mark is the first Gospel written and is symbolized by a lion to denote Christ as powerful and fast-paced. The Book of John, understood to be the last gospel composed, is perceived as an eagle because the story differs greatly and is often more developed than the other Gospels. Comparing John 2 to the Gospel of Mark will depict unique themes and characteristics of Jesus.

The Gospels of Mark, Luke and Matthew are called the Synoptic Gospels because they all share many of the same stories including some verses that are word for word identical. Most scholar believe that the Gospel of Mark was written first with the Gospel of Luke and Matthew having been written later using Mark and other sources. Since the authors of Luke and Matthew had Mark as a guide while writing, the differences between the three gospels are purposeful and have theological importance. The selected verses in the three gospels contain the same general structure with Jesus asking who the public and his disciples think he is and then correcting them. However, the additions, removals and revisions Luke and Matthew contain change the focus of the argument and have theological implications.

Scholars believe that it is unlikely that one of the Twelve wrote Matthew Gospel because of the description. "The manner in which Matthew presents his record of Jesus ancestors is typical of his use of the Hebrew bible and his purpose is not only to establish Jesus messianic credentials by right of descent from Abraham and David, but also to present Jesus birth as the climax of Israelite history" (Harris, 2014, pp. 166). Most of these scriptures in Matthew Gospel is an extension to the Gospel of Mark. "Matthew retains the apocalyptic themes found in Mark, but he significantly modifies them" (Harris, 2014, pp. 194). Out of all three Synoptic Gospel’s, Mark’s Gospel is the shortest as well as the first Gospel to be written. . Moreover, scholars suggest that the Gospel of Mark is a summary of Peter’s sermon in the house of Cornelius (Acts 10). Additionally, Mark’s Gospel ends with a commission similar to the other Gospels. Whereas the other Gospels commissions are similar, Mark is the only gospel that addresses the problem of reception and rejection of the gospel. In Matthew’s gospel, Matthew focuses on discipleship, obedience to Jesus’ teachings, and all nations of the world. On the other hand, Mark’s gospel focuses on preaching, good news, and reaching every creature. The Gospel of Mark unashamedly jumps right into the action of Jesus’s life allowing us the opportunity to be a part of the drama as it unfolds.

The purpose of this gospel was to present Jesus Christ to Gentiles and to encourage believers to persevere and withstand the face of persecution and perhaps even martyrdom. The highlight of The Gospel of Mark revolves around significant events in the life of Christ. These events consisted of his suffering and crucifixion. Mark put the pieces of Jesus style as a teacher and his disciples ’mentality in his writing. When understanding the Gospel of Mark, it introduces The Gospel as a text read by scholars, academics, scholars, individuals on the street, and Christian people. Mark is a text that raises many important questions, both scholarly and theologically. The text verifies that by tradition John Mark wrote the book of Mark in the New Testament (Harris, 2014). However, it is furthermore acknowledged that his accounts in the book of Mark came from the oral passing of knowledge regarding Jesus from individuals in the area. Modern scholars are unable to confirm this tradition due to the word of mouth passing of information. The purpose of the Gospel of Mark is to show that our Lord Jesus Christ is the Messiah, the Son of God who was sent to suffer and to serve in order to rescue and restore mankind. Mark was the second of four Gospels although some Scholars argue and insist Mark was the first Gospel written 1. Mark was written by John Mark in AD 65, with a target audience of Roman Christian beleivers 2. Mark was written in a unique manner in regards to literary genre, as it contains figures of speech, and portray life situations in a passionate story like setting that can make the reader feel as if he is there 3. The Gospel of Mark is the shortest of the four Gospels, however it is written in a manner that emphasizes more so on Jesus’s works than Jesus’s words 4. The key theme in Mark is to portray the life of Jesus Christ as the son of God 5, and the purpose was to show the human qualities and emotions that Jesus displayed from anger (Mark 3:5), and compassion (Mark 1:41). Some of the key events of Jesus Christ’s life in the Gospel Mark include his miracles, his entrance into Jerusalem, the last supper, his arrest and trial, his crucifixion, his resurrection, and his ascension 6. The Gospel of Mark ends with his instruction to the eleven Apostles “And he said unto them “Go ye into all the world, and preach the Gospel to the whole creation” (Mark 16:16), and his ascension into Heaven (Mark 16:19).

The Gospels of Luke and Mark are considered synoptic because of their similarity in writing styles, dated manuscripts and repeated content. Although the Gospel of Luke and Mark were written in earlier times for instruction, they are applicable to our lives today. During the times of Jesus, people were more likely to respond to people they could relate to. Luke being a Greek was able to reach Greeks because he knew their culture was attracted to beauty, ideas and truth. He begins his gospel declaring his intent to draw up a narrative of events through resources and eyewitness to be presented to his Greek audience.

Mark is the best storyteller of the synoptic gospels. The synoptic gospels, Mark, Matthew, and Luke in the new testament of the Bible are similar stories, sequence, and wording. The book of Matthew and Luke displays a viewpoint of the stories as told in the book of Mark. The three synoptic gospels stand in contrast to the book of John whose content is distinct. The role of miracles plays a critical role in the New Testament of the Bible in religious traditions in Christianity. The synoptic gospels reflects unique differences regarding miracles of healing as told in Mark in contrast to Matthew and Luke. I plan to demonstrate the differences in two synoptic gospels by comparing and contrasting them to two miracles of healing in the book of Mark.
