Since the pitchers do not bat, this causes further separation between the two groups, adding even more discontinuity to the situation, highlighting the differences between the two sub-groups. The fact that the field players are divided up into two teams to play against each other but the pitchers are left out makes it almost like there is three teams and that causes competition. This brings as to an idea that Simmel had about groups: “A typical example of multiple group affiliations within a single group is the competition among persons who show their solidarity in other respects” (Simmel. 2006:155). Are they elevated to a new level because of their role? Do the coaches and the structure of the team protect the pitchers like something that can only be used at the most needed of situations? The comment: “they care about us so we don’t bat” shines a light on this question. At least that pitcher believes that the coaches are keeping the pitchers from batting because they are afraid that they will get hurt. During batting practices the field players rotate around to different batting stations while the pitchers stay in the corner stretching or practicing. The difference of not being able to bat only lets the pitchers be a small part of practice and during games it does not get better because only one pitcher can pitch during games or scrimmages. During the scrimmages the pitchers were not divided up into two teams like the rest of the players, instead they just rotated in and out, like they were their own team. This could add to the separation between not only the pitchers and the field players but also the pitcher and the other pitchers. If the pitchers’ “team” is the other pitchers, but they do not actually play together, than the competition or the reaching of the goal that was the definition of a team, is not reached.
