“ Life is full of emotional ups and downs. But when the “down” times are long lasting or interfere with your ability to function, you may be suffering”(NIMH). Its normal for humans to feel sad after a break up, a disappointment or a tragic lost, but when your sadness prolong for a long period of time and the feeling increases and intensifies to the point that a person can’t function properly at their capacity, the sadness can turn to a severe problem. Depression, its considered a serious illness that affects everyone regarding their age, sex, economic status and ethnic/ racial background. Statistics have shown that one in ten adults suffers depression annually and that women are twice likely to be affected by this mental illness (NIHM). Although, the majority of people that suffer depression don’t get treated for this condition, people that get treated improve their condition and feel better about themselves since depression can be curable with proper treatment.
Depression affects the body, mind behavior and mood, many experience depression in different ways, some of the common symptoms that people experience are difficulty in concentrating, remembering or making decisions, persistence of sadness, lost of interest in pleasurable activities, irritability, excessive crying, feelings of guilt, worthless, helplessness, hopefulness, sleeping to much or too little, gaining or loosing weight, fatigue, thoughts or death or suicide and even attempting
The symptoms of depression usually vary from person to person; symptoms can either be severe or moderate. Some people can be indecisive, have uncontrollable sobbing, and feelings of despair, anger, and worthlessness. People with moderate symptoms might still be able to function, but their depression can cause them to lack a feeling of pleasure or ambition. As the above symptoms suggest, depression has to do with a lot more than just being sad. The disease must be given more attention and treated as a global public health priority. Depression is mental illnesses characterized by persistent feelings of sadness, despair and worthlessness that interfere with daily functioning and personal relationships. It is an illness caused by an imbalance of the chemicals in the brain. It affects about 19 million people and cost billions in any given year (Ford-Martin). Some of the symptoms of depression are having a hard time focusing, constant crying, and loss of interest or pleasure in ordinary everyday activities, sleep problems, problems with eating and weight (gain or loss). It may vary from mild, brief occasional dips in a person's mood to a severe lifelong persistence in extensive depressive episodes characterizing a person with intense feelings of self-worthlessness. Overall depression is a very common mental health disorder, however it is still highly misunderstood. This disorder is seen to be “one of the greatest, if not the greatest disease burden of the twenty first century”. (Mulholland.1) As this disorder brings distress to millions of households across the nation, it is frequently misdiagnosed or simply not seen as an issue of concern at all. Leading to “a great deal of suffering and a substantial number of deaths”. (Mulholland.1) Alas, the condition sadly evokes a lot of stigma. There were a few things I found in this article that helped me understand the material in the book better. First, the fact that this article was a personal narrative helped me understand the material tremendously. It is one thing to simply read definitions and examples, but it is another to read someone’s actual experience. Second, the author’s description of his physical symptoms as well as what he was experiencing emotionally truly helped me distinguish depression from just being sad.

Depression have become a major problem in our society today. People who haven’t experience depression will not understand how it feel and what it can do to a person. Many people also doesn’t understand what depression is, or how it can related to suicidal ideation. In fact, studies have documented that the majority of young suicide victims had depression at the time of death and most suicide survivors were diagnosed with symptoms of clinical depression at the time of their attempt (Mojs, Biederman, Głowacka, Strzelecki, Ziemska, Samborski 2015). People who experience depression must find way to cope with depression and know how to get help in order to prevent suicidal ideation. Only a handful of people know this about me, however one year ago I was diagnosed with moderate suicidal depression. Depression is a mental illness that not only affects how you mentally perceive reality, it affects how your brain processes and executes your actions as well.
