In the article “Taking Politics Out of Climate Change,” Christina Couch talks about the effects that politics has on environmental issues including climate change. The author mentioned that America is divided into two groups of people with differing opinions on what steps should be taken. This division makes climate change a very controversial subject, and it is difficult to decide what should be done to prevent the negative effects of it. As the country gets split apart on the subject, it will make it even more difficult to make decisions in the future that everyone will be happy with.
The author mentioned that people generally have difficulty accepting facts that they have not previously believed in, no matter how strong the evidence happens to be. This applies to many issues, including climate change. People who believe that climate change is not an issue (or who believe that it is not real) generally have difficulty acknowledging the fact that it could be an issue. This phenomenon is called “solution aversion” and it makes things much more difficult when decisions are trying to be made on a subject.
People with differing views on issues have hard times making decisions that will make both sides happy. The article states that Republicans and Democrats usually have differing

Before the year 2000, both the Democratic and Republican parties had approximately the same percentage of people believing that climate change was already affecting people. However, certain decisions (such as the Kyoto Protocol) caused many debates, leading to a major divide in views on the subject. As of 2016, three-quarters of Democrats believed we are already feeling effects of global warming, but less than half of Republicans thought the same way on the topic. This division in views on climate change will cause a major problem when it comes time to make major decisions about the
Climate change is one of today’s most hotly debated topic. Scientists for many decades have made supposed claims that current energy creation and reliance on fossil fuels will lead to inevitable changes to the planet. Today, climate change denial is still a popular to most of the world despite the mounds of evidence to support that it exists. The climate change issue suffers from being mismanaged by various parties through focusing on the wrong issues and the lack of true commitment from the general public, according to Sandra Steingraber.
In today’s society commoners are hard pressed from both sides of a raging debate that has encompassed the political landscape of America and much of the world. This raging debate concerns Global Warming or preferably Climate Change. Each side trying to convince the populace one way or the other. On one side the liberal ideology is convinced that the rapid change in the temperature of the earth is caused by extensive human Carbon Dioxide emissions. On the other side, the conservative ideology is certain that the change in the temperature of the earth is due to natural causes and that there is no need to alter the way countries are run in order to compensate for Climate Change. The masses are currently being fed pro global warming ideology. This is primarily due to the current president Barack Obama who is a major pro global warming advocate. Sixty percent of the United States population disagrees with president Obama on his stance on climate change, and there is strong scientific backing for the populace.
Generally speaking, anyone who lives in the United States of America knows that there are two main political parties—the Republicans and the Democrats. Having two main parties has its advantages and, of course, its disadvantages. For example, in By the People James E. Monroe and Rogan Kersh (301) point out having this type of system creates “predictability and stability.” However, they also declare (301) it can “lead to a gridlock.” This is not a new concept either as there has been a divide since the beginning of both parties. The two parties more often than not disagree on various issues, while rarely agreeing on what is best for the country.
Party polarization is another factor halting action being taken to solve the problem. Both political parties in the United States have divided views among many issues. This polarization between the Democrats and Republicans has formed because over time their membership of the two parties are purer, causing them to grow farther apart, states Jonathan Haidt and Sam Abrams in their article, “The Top Ten Reasons American Politics Are So Broken.” Republicans are becoming more conservative while the Democrats on the other hand, are becoming more liberal. In the issue of global warming, the division between the two parties are very distinct. The Democrats in this matter believes global warming exists and should be dealt with. The Republicans on
Through his research, McCright proves that that there is sizable political divide between liberals/Democrats and conservatives/Republicans on the issue of global warming, which consequently has caused the divide between the public. The constant flow of political messages and media coverage of political debates, especially those concerning climate change, highly contribute to the growing divide between the public. Americans’ political orientations, moderate educational attainment and self-reported understanding are completely consistent with the predictions of the politicians’ hypothesis and information-processing theory. Given the bifurcated flow of conflicting information on climate change from the politicians on both sides of the political spectrum, ideological and partisan camps in the general public receive completely different information on climate change, which reinforces their existing political differences. This provides strong evidence of both ideological and political polarization on climate change beliefs and concern over the past decade. It demonstrates that since political ideologies so heavily influence people’s opinions and
Campbell & Kay (2014) found that people deny climate change and global warming, because of fear. They deny global warming and climate change, because they do not want to deal with the solving the problem. Despite what scientist mention about global warming and climate change their views of denial do not change. People fear the solution to the problem. For example, Campbell & Kay (2014) mention how Republican always doubts the truth about global warming and climate change. The reason being is that they views on global warming and climate change is a threat to the economy. They would rather deny it all, instead of solving the problem of global warming and climate
For many years there has been a great debate between scientists who believe that human activity has major negative effects on climate change, and those who argue that climate change is caused by a variety of factors, not just harmful human activity. Those who support that belief that activities such as the burning of fossil fuels could cause disastrous climate changes and global warming and those who believe that research has been skewed to alter the way findings are presented fiercely debate when and how climate change should be addressed by governments. These debates have caused the idea of Global Warming to become not only a scientific concern, but a political concern as well. With both sides having strong convictions with respect to how the issues are addressed, it has allowed events such as “Climate-Gate” come to pass.
In 2015, world leaders gathered together for the United Nations climate conference in Paris, in hopes of reaching an emissions agreement to reduce climate change. The outcome was a global pact between 195 countries, including the United States. The politicians and policy makers of the conference were heavily influenced by a study done by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The “Pausebuster” study, published in 2015, refuted a 2013 study by United Nations scientists, which claimed that global warming had slowed down from 1998 to 2013. The NOAA study, in fact, reported that the increase of global warming per decade had increased, instead of
Climate Change is a hot topic at the moment especially with the current administration running our country here in the United States. Our current president at moment tweeted on on November 6, 2012 saying "The concept of global warming was created by and for the Chinese in order to make U.S. manufacturing non-competitive.". This is a scary thing to hear from a leader running a country that is an example for the global community. But the fact stands climate change is real and it’s happening around us. There is expansive based agreement inside established researchers that environmental change is genuine. The U.S. Natural Assurance Organization, the National Flight and Space Organization,
The issue of climate change is a recurring topic in the news, there have been scientist trying to gain support from politicians and the general public to combat this issue for years. There are several reasons why there is a lack of support and policy to address the problem relating to climate change. The issue of climate change is so divisive because people are uneducated about the topic. While there are numerous sources of information that is available to the general public, people are still ill-informed. To add, the general public and politicians may disregard conversations of climate change because they may think there are other issues that are more important. To make the public understand and to gain support for control climate change,
The technological advances that are occurring just within the 21st century has given scientists resources to collect overwhelmingly accurate evidence showing global climate change is occurring. This has led to an ongoing and problematic controversial debate whether climate change is real or a hoax. The environmental issues that are taking place due to the effects of climate change are large, the solutions to these problems will vastly change human’s lifestyles and be costly. Climate change denial is supported due to politics, the fear of losing jobs in coal and agricultural occupations, and the control corporations have over
The response to climate change has proved inadequate on many levels. Partially this is because the issue requires scientific literacy that many simply do not possess, allowing leaders to underplay or ignore the danger since the public is not able to analyze the issues, and giving opportunity for groups such as gas companies to wield their considerable clout in favor of what benefits business instead of the environment. Furthermore, because of the large scale of climate change, the consequences are hard to see and the blame can be pushed around. Accordingly, climate change is highly-politicized, and cannot be addressed factually without upsetting one group or another. Whether or not climate change exists may be a difficult question to answer to the satisfaction of some individuals, but it is still not a political question; treating it as such means leaving the potential danger unexamined.
This lecture was hosted by Dr. Andrew Hoffman from University of Michigan. As suggested by the title, this lecture was a “diluted” version of considerable research from his book, which focused on understanding the effects of culture and politics on the notion of climate change. Dr. Hoffman started the lecture by providing many scientific studies and facts proving the reality and seriousness of climate change. So the question is, why do some people choose to not believe and oppose the scientific consensus on issues of climate change, while all the proofs are present? And the simple answer he gave was that, the debate over climate change right now is not about science, is not about climate models, but about politics and the conflicting worldviews of these people and the values that are threatened by the notion of climate change. Dr. Hoffman then explained that one of the key arguments is that a scientific consensus does not necessarily reflect social consensus.
attitudes toward global warming are shaped by an individual’s personal experience. Which they validate by performing over 2100 surveys across four different states. Respondents were provided with comprehensive information about the effects of several factors on their views about global warming. Briefly put, the study found that views on climate change in the United States were being shaped by a mix of personal experiences, events, and physical changes on the planet in this study most respondents were as although the focus of their data concentrates on the Individual-Level Causes of Belief in Climate Change. They also discover that there are other factors at play that they have to take into consideration, which is what sets this study apart from the one that came before it. Borick and Rabe as oppose to Carlisle and Smith believe demographics – more specifically party affiliation – play a role in an individual’s views towards environmental
Climate change. A buzz spreading around the world that has been known for decades but has recently bloomed into a rather controversial topic. With the topic being brought up in political debates, presidential speeches, as well as everyday conversations, there is one thing everyone can agree on: climate change is happening. Climatologists have proven with scientific evidence that the earth is rising in temperature and that this is a growing threat to our society. (AAAS) Although everyone agrees on this, there is still a disagreement on why climate change is happening and how can someone stop it? The two questions are really one in the same because once we get to the root of the issue we can prevent it from happening. Climate change remains a crucial problem in the U.S. and there are different approaches are being considered on how to solve this issue coming from our states, our president, and our congressman.
