Taking a Look at Basketball

Basketball is a sport that was created for a gym class and evolved into a worldwide sensation . Basketball was created in 1891 by a man named James Naismith. He originally created the game for his gym class because, it was unbearable outside for any other sports , and the game originally was nonphysical and only had 13 rules.

December 21, 1891- The birth of basketball. It has been changed from simply shooting a soccer ball into a peach basket to dunking a seven pound, leather ball into an iron rim. In the early years of the game, basketball was not as popular as other sports. In the 1985 NBA draft all this would change with the emergence of a 6'6" basketball phenomenon from Wilmington, North Carolina. Although going third in the draft, he recreated the game and is known as the best player to ever touch a basketball; he is Michael Jordan.

In 1891 a simple game was invented that changed the world. Basketball is a athletic sport usually played on an indoor court where two teams of five each attempt to score by shooting the basketball into one of two baskets at each end of the court. The team who scores the most baskets wins the game. Because of its continuous action and frequent scoring basketball is one of the most popular spectator sports in the world. Basketball can be played outdoors as well, it was invented to serve as an exciting indoor game for the winter months and to be played with less contact than football. It quickly became a spectator sport. Now basketball attracts larger audiences than ever especially in the United States, South America, and Europe.

Naismith had invented the game so the YMCA could play it during the winter season. He hung up two peach baskets to use as hoops. In the original game that Naismith invented, bouncing the ball was prohibited. The first game of basketball took place on January 20th, 1892 in Springfield, Massachusetts. The game had 18 players in total with 9 players on each team. Since it wasn’t a popular sport at the time they didn’t have any money to invent the basketball so they just played with a soccer ball. After attempting to play the game for over 30 minutes they ended it. The final score was 1-0. William R. Chase was the first man to ever score in a basketball game. Imagine, that in 1896, the first ever professional basketball is being played on the third floor of Masonic Temple Hall in New Jersey, that was held in a banquet hall, which was enclosed with sharp and dangerous chicken wire that you could easily be cut with. The game of basketball, as you can tell, has developed a great margin over time. As far as the ball and net itself, to the rules and way the game is played, there were many different causes for changes that had positive effects, as well as some that may have had some negative effects.

Back in 1891, a young man named James Naismith invented the game of basketball. It was to keep athletes in shape during the chilly winter. The objective was to lob a ball into the opponent's basket. When he proposed the game to everyone, they were keen to play, but at the time, not many rules were created, so when they got to play, they tackled and punched each other so they could get a hold of the ball. To avoid any casualties, Naismith added fouls for the people who were using aggressive behaviour on the court. The inventor who made basketball was James Naismith. James was born in 1861. James attended school at McGill University and Presbyterian College in Montreal (A&E TV, 2014).. He became a physical education teacher at McGill University and at Springfield College in Springfield Massachusetts. James Naismith lived in Almont, Ontario. Basketball was made in 1891(Kagan, 2004). The basketball game was patent in 1929 by Dr. Heather Guthrie, head of physical education at the school for Christian workers (A&E TV, 2014). The actual basketball itself was patent by G.L. Pierce on June 25, 1929 (Kagan, 2004).

Basketball, a sport that began among 18 men in a YMCA, has blossomed into a global business played by over three hundred million people today. Dr. James Naismith, under instruction from the head of physical education at the School for Christian Workers, was given two weeks to create a new indoor sport. In the beginning, the game was played with a peach basket and a soccer ball, the first contest was played December 21, 1898. The NBA, or National Basketball Association’s current net worth is about 635 million dollars, infinitely more than ever expected by Naismith who was simply tasked to make a distraction for the rowdy youth of the church at the time. Basketball is one of the most interesting sports in America because of it’s immensely fast growth, social media presence and incredibly popular superstars.

Basketball included features that are shocking compared to today’s game of basketball. Though it may be hard to grasp, basketball started off with “two nailed up peach baskets”(NBAHoopsOnline). After the first shot was made by William R. Chase the ball had to be removed from the basket by a person on a ladder. That all changed in 1906 when the peach baskets were transformed to the hoops we see today. It didn’t take a genius to create hoops that were open at the bottom.

The creator of basketball was James Naismith, he was born in a small town in Canada and soon went o attend McGill University in Montreal. After becoming the head athletic director at McGill University he change course and went to YMCA training university in Springfield Massachusetts USA in 1891.
