Taking a Look at Bullying

It is important to define the term bullying accurately because that term alone can be adversarial. With that being said it can mean intimidation, aggression, hostile behaviors, and pestering the weak. Bullying takes place in schools, work, and in your own home. It can pretty much happen anywhere. Bullying in my terms is anything that can make a person feel weak minded, and has to submit.

An average bullying session lasts about 37 seconds; an adult intervenes in the problem about one in twenty-five times (Bullying Facts). Bullying is seen as aggressive and unwanted behavior between two or more people (Aspa).  Most people who are not involved in the actions going on do not really know it’s happening.  Most parents do not even know when their child, or children, are being bullied (Bullying Facts).  Bullying can be prevented if the right consequences take place.  Parents and schools have the rules about bullying prevention, but these do not prevent the bullying from continuing their ways.  People who bully often should receive bigger consequences because eventually the problem could escalate and the bully will continue their

Most kids say that they don’t see bullying around school. In just Minnesota alone there is talk about bullying and how to prevent it. Sen. Franken states, “Nine out of 10 LGBT kids are harassed or bullied in school. One-third report having skipped school in the last month because they felt unsafe” (Shah 14). Kids should not feel unsafe to go to school. School is supposed to be a safe place to go and if someone needs help there are supposed to be people there to guide them. Franken adds, “But the sad fact is that our federal laws are failing” (Shah 14). Laws have been made to try to stop bullying, but bullying continues to exist. This shows how out of control bullying is becoming.

Bullying is progressively seen as a enormous problem in the United States and around the world and unfortunately for many, numerous research has started to prove that its consequences are real and can have long lasting impact for both victim and those who love them. Throughout or society Homosexuality is deemed unfavorable in religious and cultural circles of people in the United States. Thus providing those to be outcast and making them even more of targets for the hostility of others. Bullying it its own right has consequences that are far reaching especially for those in the LGBT community.

Over the years bullying has been used as an attack mechanism to bring fear upon an individual. Bullying has been described in so many ways such as attacking someone mentally, physically, or emotionally (The Bullies page 17). It has been used to abuse power, psychological, behavior, or physical (The Bullies page 18). Every seven minutes a child or teen is bullied.  Bullying is like a disease it comes in many shapes and sizes, and it can spread really easy. Bullying also comes in many different ways such as physical, verbally, and socially. Bullying is the use of superior strength or influence to intimidate someone, typically to force him or she to do what one wants. According to the CDC, suicide is the third leading cause of death in youth between the ages of 10 and 24. It results in approximately 4,400 deaths each year (Get the Facts). Most teens are bullied because of looks, body shape, and race. These things cause many issues, including; suicide, self harm, and even depression. Teenage bullying is a very common issue in the US. There are many types of bullying, including; cyber, physical, verbal, and so many more. It can cause so many issues and affect many people.

Bullying among school-aged children is regarded as a widespread problem in the United States and there is no one-size-fits-all solution to the problem. According to the National Center for Educational Statistics (NCES), over one third of students in elementary and middle schools are impacted by bullying (Klein, 2012). Bullying is defined as “unwanted, aggressive behavior among school-aged children that involves a real or perceived power imbalance. The behavior is repeated, or has the potential to be repeated, over time” (Klein,2012). Why should teachers promote bullying you may ask? Teachers can benefit from student bullying other students. With the several weeks in the school year that are spent lecturing about bullying, that time could have been used to assign more homework or classwork which ultimately is more work for the teachers to grade. In school, especially high school, bullying is something that’s just going to happen. Once you graduate, it's not like you'll ever see them again, if you do then at that point it won't matter.

The government should have limited power to receive access to our personal internet content and information. The photos we take, messages we send, and our search history should all be kept to ourselves. No one should have permission to go through our privacy. Its called privacy for a reason, shouldn't it be kept private? Internet Bullying, commonly referred as cyber bullying is a serious problem in the U.S. and it should be prevented at all times. Nevertheless their will always be bullies and victims. Although going through our social media may help kids with their bullying. It_Ñés also a privacy issue. Bullying is a wide spread epidemic in our country. Almost everyone will be bullied at some point in their life. Bullying happens for many reasons and can have fatal consequences if it is not handled.

The New Face of Bullying chapter emphasizes how to identify bullying and understand gateway behaviors. Three characteristics that identify bullying are power imbalance, repeated occurrence, and intentionality. Power imbalance occurs when bullies are bigger and stronger than the victims. Victims are vulnerable targets since they’re physically weaker and can’t defend themselves. Repeated occurrences occur when bullies constantly harass victims on numerous occasions through different components such as physical bullying, verbal bullying, and cyber bulling. Intentionality occurs when bullies have a negative agenda to cause visible hurt or harm towards victims for their enjoyment.

The effect of bullying is leaving many kids with problems in school, workplace, and at home. Bullying can lead to long term problems as well. One problem is teenagers get emotional stressed. This follows them everywhere they go. In any situation it becomes a bigger problem than it is because they are emotionally stressed. Many teeenagres don’t know how to handle being bullied and what to do. They don't tell anyone and keep their emotions bottled in. When teens don’t talk and handle their situation their emotions go all over the place. But if more anti bullying groups would talk to teens there would be big changes in schools. Bullying is a huge problem here in America, one that is not going away anytime soon. Thousands of people report being bullied everyday. Many only think the bullying can only happen to kids. Sadly, many adults are also victims of bullying too. With bullying being so prevalent in todays society it has had a huge effect on students at school, it can also affect adults in the work place. With social media people can bully from behind a computer screen. Many celebrities and companies are using their platform to help spread the word about bullying.

Overall bullying should be stopped because most people start having physical and mental effects because of bullying. Children and teens start having low self-esteem and they start to have that mental effect of them having lesser value and eventually start thinking of committing suicide. To keep all this crisis from happening to children and teens then once you start getting bullied you have to tell a parent or adult to stop the problem right
