When times are difficult and people feel as if there is no possible way they could ever be happy again, one of the best ways to overcome that feeling of uselessness is by doing something you love to do. One way some individuals believe is the best way to overcome difficult times is through comedy. One person who believes making people laugh can help ease her pain is Ellen Degeneres. In her talk show “Ellen” when she was upset about her dog being taken away from another family, she said, “I’m a human being and I have bad days and I have sad days but when I walk out here and when ya’ll cheer and when you’re here to dance and here to laugh and I know I make people happy, it changes my mood. I come out here and I can do anything because of the …show more content…
At a young age she lived in New Orleans with her family but after her parents got divorced she left with her mom (Betty) and moved to Texas at the age of 13 while her brother (Vance) and father (Elliott) remained in Louisiana. When she was sixteen, Degeneres says, that she was molested by her mother’s second husband while her mother was in the middle of breast cancer surgery. This situation which happened so many years ago still haunts Ellen and her mother to this day. She commented to an interviewer that “ We don't talk about it much because she feels really, really guilty,” (ELLEN At Home, At Ease). Ellen also told the interviewer that “it was a horrible situation for me, and to not know anything about my body at 16 years old, to be raised a Christian Scientist , to not know that everyone’s breasts are different, and this man is telling me he needs to feel mine because he thinks he’s found another lump in my mother’s breasts.” (ELLEN At Home, At Ease). The day after the incident she told her best friends mother about it and was told to keep it a secret which is exactly what she did. This abuse continued through her high school career and it wasn't until 2 years after her graduation that she finally told her mother about it. Her mother didn't want to believe any of the news and was ready to leave him but she still stayed with him for another 10 to 12 years afterwards. Her mother, Betty Degeneres says:” there aren't …show more content…
She said that she found her ‘calling’ when she performed a makeshift comedy routine about a person that was telling a story while eating. Her performance at the party was noticed and she started getting requests from local coffeehouses to perform for them as well. Ellen landed her first solid gig in 1981 as emcee at Clyde’s Comedy Corner in the French Quarter which happened to be the only comedy club in New Orleans at the time. Her reward for her shows at the Corner...was being named the “funniest person in America” in 1982 by a talent scout for the cable channel Showtime. Degeneres’ first gig had made a huge impact on her comical career because soon enough Ellen found herself touring the United States in a Winnebago bus. But being named the Funniest person in America has its downside. One of these downsides was having people try to humiliate you in front of a crowd. Ellen recalled a time when she was working a club and the previous performer had turned the crowd against her before she even took the stage. “The front row was a bunch of guys who actually stood up, turned their chairs around, and faced the other way,” Degeneres said. Instead of giving up she ended up hiring an agent and then entered into a contest at the San Francisco Comedy Festival where she came in second! Her fame kept on rising between being called onto the Tonight Show and other talk shows. She performed for
1-Aside from improving our moods, laughter can reduce stress, help fight infection, and reduce pain.
"Successively, Selekman explains that fostering therapist-client cooperation is purposive use of self-disclosure, the use of humor, normalizing, demonstrating cultural and gender sensitivity, and therapeutic compliments. Mark Twain once said, 'Against the assault of laughter nothing can stand.' Humor can help generate a relaxed atmosphere, influence the client from his or her concerns, and heal those in pain. Madanes (1984) contend that what makes change possible is the therapist's ability to be confident and to see what is funny or desirable in a dire situation'. Laughter releases hormones from the
Norman Cousins said, “Laughter is a powerful way to tap positive emotions" (Moss 1). Humor is studied by many researchers in sociology, psychology, art, literature, and medicine. When people wonder whether humor aids in areas other than health, a treasure trove of possible benefits to the learning or educational community is opened up. Humor can be used as a tool to promote learning.Research speaks to the many benefits of humor in healing, to its benefits in the classroom or boardroom, from reducing stress of students or employees, to boosting self-esteem and feelings of camaraderie. Additionally, studies show that those who use humor to convey a message are often more favorably perceived. Humor helps deliver the presenter's message to
Laughter relates to positive thinking. The positive thinking helps us to improve our immune system and become healthier. It helps in removing the negative thoughts from our mind and not letting our immune system become worse further.
After high school, DeGeneres did not know what she wanted to do with her life. At the age of 19, one of DeGeneres’ friends was killed in a car accident and DeGeneres was living in an apartment basement with no money. She suddenly had a calling from God and realized she wanted to be the first woman on the Tonight Show and take the path of stand-up. However, this was a challenge for her to constantly hide her secret of her being gay. She was worried people wouldn’t listen to her and was living with shame and fear. Eventually, DeGeneres came to realization that she wanted to be honest with herself and she told everyone who she really was. Even though she did not receive any job offers for three years she knew she was doing the right thing due to the

Wayne Coyne, a famous guitar player, believes that everyone laughs; everyone has a sense of humor. No matter what your class is, what race you are, or what age you are, there is always a part of our brain that makes us laugh. Coyne was driving in a car once on a cold and windy day. He was comfortable in the place where he was, until he saw two people huddled looking frozen with ragged coats. He pitied them, until he saw that they were laughing. He did not care why, but he saw that they had a sense of humor. Even though they may have been in poor condition, they had a moment of happiness. Coyne remembers when he worked at Long John Silvers for eleven years, when his salary was low. Even when he was not a rock star, he still had his moments of happiness. His class did not prevent him from laughing every now and then. I think you have everyone should laugh as well. I do not think that all have the opportunity of laughing; some are depressed or in terrible conditions, but I believe that everyone deserves to laugh and that they should have the joyful moments in

It is clear DeGeneres desires importance to her peers and fans. She has created a large empire where she helps people and promotes positivity. DeGeneres would not do this if she did not want to be important. This is not a necessarily as negative aspect. DeGeneres should be important because of all that she does. How she helps people in need makes her important and known. If people hear her name, they can look her up and donate to her charities she supports. Her importance helps her market herself to others and in turn help more people in need. According to Suggerman, Scullard, and Wilhelm (2011), “They’re particullary interested in being around ‘larger than life’ people who show the most promise for creating exciting opportunities” (p. 36).

She has played this game thousands of times on her TV show called Ellen with many actresses and musicians. The game is quite simple, one player holds the phone above they’re forehead and the other player has to act out the noun on the screen. On the game you can choose what category of nouns to act out. There are many different categories to choose from, there is zoo animals, circus, bugs, superheros and plenty more. Whoever the player is, they must guess as many nouns on the cards as possible in 60 seconds. Another fun effect Ellen added on the

Laughter, the different types of laughter could either make someone’s day or ruin it, depending on how it is used. Here is a representation of good laughter, a online entertainer named markiplier gets a lot of comments on his videos saying that they were having a bad day and his video made them forget all the bad stuff for a few minutes and it made their day. Now for the bad side of laughter such as bullying or just when someone is getting their feelings hurt and they just laugh along with it instead of trying to asses the problem there for leading to more feelings being hurt and it could just get worse and worse. I hope that one day we could all laugh with the same thing and be honest with what hurts are feelings so we can fix those problems
