Chapter 3
Research Methodology This chapter represents and describes the research design, research setting, sampling procedure, data gathering instruments and statistical treatments of data.
Research Design The descriptive method of research was used in this study. With this it does not only require the collection and tabulation of data, but also it entails describing the data presented in this paper. In particular, the study attempted to describe and analyze the factors that lead the development of tardiness among the students of Xavier University High School.
Research Setting The research was done in Xavier University Highschool- Ateneo de Cagayan, Cagayan de Oro City. June 1999 marked the beginning of co-education at XUHS and the

Data Collection Procedure A researcher-made questionnaire was given to the respondents to find out about the factors that lead XUHS students of being tardy. Furthermore, in-depth interviews were audio recorded to substantiate the results in this study. Statistical Treatment To analyze and interpret the gathered data, the statistical tools were employed in this study. These are frequency and percentage to describe the profile of the students and the factors that lead XUHS students of being
In response to the question set, I will go into detail of the study, consisting of the background, main hypotheses, as well the aims, procedure and results gathered from the study; explaining the four research methods chosen to investigate,
This category is primarily characterized by students who are struggling with time management, and therefore, are constantly having difficulty getting to class on time. Despite the fact that they may be occasionally tardy, these students often have excellent attendance and show a willingness to learn. Unlike the high school students, it appears that these students show less of a concern with social interaction and are more concerned with getting to and from their classes.
It has come to my attention that kids are going to school tired therefore looking like zombies. A good reason for this is that they are waking up so early for school. These reasons listed are why students should start school a little later in the morning. School should start later since students are not getting enough sleep, having health issues, consequently are getting severe and students are being tardy due to lack of sleep.
Data collected from research already conducted will be analyzed for limitations and to conduct a comparative analysis of the results. The survey completed by classmates will be used to collect
There is a huge problem with the start times of schools around the United States. Many schools are starting as early as 7:30 and that does not provide the student with an adequate amount of sleep to get through the day. It also does not provide the student with enough time to recover from the previous day, it is a vicious cycle that feeds upon itself only creating more and more problems as more sleep is lost. Early start times does not only effect students, it indirectly effects all the people around the students as well. For example, it affects at home relations as well as at school relations. Less sleep results in a more irritable attitude and that is a recipe for disaster. This paper will provide ample amount of evidence from experts who have conducted a vast amount of research on the issue
Studies show students that go to school before 8:30 a.m. are not learning to their maximum capabilities. However, students attending schools that have delayed their start times are showing an increase in academic performance and standardized test scores in English, Math, Science and Social Studies. Many studies show that even the lowest scoring students are showing tremendous improvement after-school start times were delayed. Students are also more willing to learn if school starts later because they get more sleep the night before. Waking up to go to school later in the morning is making it possible for students to be more focused during the day and work to their full potential. Also, tardiness and absenteeism has decreased in school with delayed start
The first reason on why school start times should be later is because it would improve student’s mental health. For instance, after the University of Minnesota did a test by changing the start times, there were many less cases of reported depression and
As a result, students will perform at a higher level, academically. Various studies have proven that students who are physically prepared for school, operate at a greater level scholarly. A specific examination would include, the study accomplished at Northwestern University in 2005. This specific study, examined 60 high school seniors and concluded that they attained a higher scored in the afternoon (3:00 p.m.–4:30 p.m.), than they did in the morning (6:30 a.m.–8:00 a.m. and 11:30 a.m.–1:00 p.m.), on vigilance tests, symbol copying, visual search tasks, and logical reasoning. In addition, research has shown that students who are sleep deprived are more likely to experience symptoms of forgetfulness, lack of concentrations and a limited ability in regards to learning. Therefore, these symptoms will negatively impact ones academic performance. Furthermore, generating the school hours, in regards to starting the day later will result in an increase in attendance, thus, an increase in academics. Studies through various schools that when the chances of one succeeding in a course increases when ones’ attendance is regular. Therefore, I believe that school should unquestionably, begin at a later time due to the beneficial development in ones academics that would result in extra
For the past three or so years now, there have been many controversies on whether schools should start at a later time. There are definitely many pros and cons if school were to start at a later time, but many teenagers would greatly appreciate it. Nowadays lately, especially in our generation that is full of technology and socializing, students tend to stay up much later than they should be. This not only causes many problems for a student’s health itself, but also pushes many problems into a teacher’s hand. This leads to the conclusion that schools should start a much later time.
This section will provide the rationale of the methods employed and highlight how the study will be performed. The study will examine the population with the sample size identified, data collection method and its analysis will be offered.
One way that late starts would benefit student is the by taking pressure off their back. The less pressure they experience, the more likely they are to be focused on their schoolwork. Lack of sleep may cause developing teenagers to be under pressure and to be more emotionally unbalanced. This can interfere with their daily life activities and affect their school grades. "Sleep experts urge a delay in morning classes until 8:30 a.m., or later, for middle and high school students" (Palamar, n.d). Scientists like the one in Palamar's exposition, advise school boards to think about the students by adding late starts to their agendas. Students may be salvaged from numerous days of stress, leading to a mental health disruption. Kholer's recent article (2012) described the findings of a study done to Indonesian middle and high school students. The study showed an improvement in test scores of those students that had a later starting school
Leaving for school on time in the morning is quite a chore when people have to rush out of bed and get going. Some students do not have time to eat breakfast in the morning and that affects them later in the day. This is ultimately affecting the student’s grades at school. In all, if school was later in the day, students would not have these problems.
The method by which data was collected in this study was through a survey. Twelve schools
It is not kind for this school system to be improperly used against the students.Instead of thinking about the “good effects”, the “bad effects” should be considered too.The impacts of a tardy are not pleasant at all to one who always does good in class. Therefore, the tardy system should be taken out or at least be considered in
The objective of this chapter is to describe the procedures used in the analysis of the data and present the main findings. It also presents the different tests performed to help choose the appropriate model for the study. The chapter concludes by providing thorough statistical interpretation of the findings.
