Task 1a
It can be hard moving from one place to another, especially if you speak another language and have different cultures. Moving to a new place can be like moving to a completely new world for some people. Doing stuff like go to the supermarket, library or school can be challenging. There are things we can do to help these newcomers, and to make them feel more welcome. We can for instance talk English with them. By doing that, they will understand more of what we are saying. We can also try to speak slowly, so it is easier for the newcomers to understand.
Another thing that would really help would be to have some cultural offerings for the newcomers. People could meet and get to know each other. The newcomers also may learn something about

You cannot continue speaking your main language, and you may have to learn the new language. Some languages may be harder to learn than others may, but one of the easiest language to master must be English. At least for us Norwegians.
Since we have English as a class already in elementary school, English is the language we Norwegians know best, except from Norwegian. We learn English every week throughout the whole school. Not only do we learn English in school, but we also see English movies, read English news and listen to English music. Our country is full off English, so it is hard to avoid it.
I think the main challenge for us moving to an English-speaking country would be to speak English. That would be because we do not speak as much English as we read. It would be especially hard to speak English in countries like Scotland, due to the Scottish accent. Conversations would sometimes be hard to take a part of, and understanding what the teacher talks about could also be a challenge. In the beginning, you would probably have the person to speak slowly and repeat the sentence many times. Also new expressions like pound, feet and miles would be hard to understand. We would always have to translate the pounds into Norwegian money to see how much money it really is. After a while, we may manage to just look at the pounds and realize how much Norwegian kroner that would be.
Many people move to America knowing little to no English making it very frustrating for them. When arriving to a different country, everything is different and there are so many things people need to adapt to. For
There are many reasons for learning English. We need to learn English for both our social and academic lives. We live in the United
Arriving in a new country was exciting and discomforting. America is a wonderful place to live, which is full of adventure and challenges. I was attracted by the Western culture. Meanwhile, different languages also troubled me. Although I began to learn English in elementary school from ABC, my listening and oral abilities tend not to be adequate. I have to study hard to improve my English, so that I can understand what the people said.
Another reason is that children learn a language by imitating the sounds they hear (mimicry) without an accent. This enables children to obtain a correct diction. Here a child has a positive experience and is able to assimilate with ease. On the other hand, an elderly person will find the learning process a challenge and to a certain extent the situation might even be so burdensome that one loses interest in learning. In Amy Tan?s speech My Mother?s English, she explains the difficulties her mother faced because she (Tan?s mother) was unable to clearly express herself. She (Tan) also felt the effects of this as a child. Not only did Tan?s mother find speaking English a barrier in the process of assimilation, but Tan herself felt her mother limited her perception (Tan 45). Since Tan?s mother was unable to speak English properly people would not give her good service and would not treat her seriously even to the extant that people ?pretended not to understand her or even acted as if they did not hear her,?(Tan 45). This is just one example of many that shows how some people have had negative experiences assimilating into American society.
In fact, not understanding what people are saying around them can cause them paranoia, and can often make them feel less than others. Moving to a new country, with a foreign language, makes it all very difficult. According to the Association for Psychological Science, it is a less difficult task to learn the language and culture of a new country when they are a child, or under the age of 15(Heine, Steven, 30 Nov. 2016.). Once they pass that age, it begins to become more difficult to adjust their mindset to learn the culture and language, when they were accustomed to something else throughout their childhood. Studies by researcher Christina Nunez show these people are easy victims of discrimination and children can be bullied, which makes them feel inferior. Their head spins when they are spoken to and has no clue what to say. It makes them nervous. To make matters worse, people who were one nurse, teachers, etc, in their countries leave everything behind, including their hard earned degree. Their degree is not valued in America, and according to research by Christina Nunez they often “find it frustrating that they can’t obtain the same jobs.”(Nunez, Christina,. "The 7 Biggest Challenges Facing Refugees and Immigrants in the US." Global Citizen. N.p., n.d. Web. 30 Nov.
At first, speaking English was a bit difficult because I did not feel confident using it with others. The most advanced students sometimes made fun of my English. The students who spoke my own language made more fun of me than the ones who were fluent in English. The teasing by the students made me feel embarrassed and shy to speak the English language, giving me a fear of being made fun of or looked at differently. Practicing the English language with my own siblings and playing with the neighborhood kids who already managed the language gave me more confidence to speak English. Taking Spanish courses in school was also an advantage, which helped me to get better at my native language and kept me from losing it.
This situation is relative to real life instances of immigration, as those moving to America with the hopes of improving their own lives and the lives of their family members are, in some cases, unfamiliar with the English language. Therefore, they must somehow learn the ways of the new people surrounding them in order to be accepted in this environment and also be able to communicate with others so they can attempt to obtain jobs to support themselves and family. Understanding the same language clearly plays an important role in assimilating to new surroundings.
It is important for immigrants to learn to speak and write in English while keeping their native tongue. Without knowing how to speak the common language here, it is impossible to blend
An immigrant that is coming to the United States has the emotion and perception that draws to a country of opportunities; that will live in a country that will be friendly. However, most of the time, immigrant do not know that they are coming to live in a different culture, and because of that, they need to experience and adjustment in many ways, and an adjustment that will help them to do many things with confidence.
To begin with, in many cases, one of the biggest hurdles for an immigrant to overcome is the language barrier. Imagine the fear an immigrant must feel, being immersed in a society whose language and culture is entirely different from their own. The bravery and diligence displayed by such foreigners to overcome this fear is admirable to
The mediocre speakers are tasked with translation between their family and the rest of the world. They learn about handling adult responsibilities and protecting their families from the world's criticism before they even finish elementary school. These children learn that there is an unspoken dynamic of us and them, with their families being the underdogs. The world is pushing them to adapt to this new society. Their surroundings preach conformity to this new nation. All the while they try to maintain connection with their past world and rich culture. They endure torment from ignorant peers, are labeled terrible names, and constantly face underestimation from those who view non-native speakers as incompetent. This kind of environment feeds their insecurity and requires repeated effort to disprove the assumptions of others, but where most would give up their efforts, immigrant children persevere. They learn to use their environment to their advantage. For them, the media is now an interesting way to pick up on the language and slang the other kids use. With these newfound words and knowledge the children have more confidence to approach new people and attempt to make
Many parents believe that it is better not to speak English. When this happens the students will not receive the practice that they really need. The student must know their parents’ language it is imperative to the student’s cultural identity and has to maintain a healthy relationship with their family. Parents’ have concerns about using their native language with their children include: learning another language is too difficult it will delay their language development; the child will not be able to master either language; they will not be as proficient as the students who know one language; confusing the two languages will happen; and they will communicate in English with an accent. The school should address these concerns before the school year begins.
It is important to speak a national language because it allows you to communicate with the majority of the population. If you cannot speak a national language, it is almost as if you have become mute, unable to speak or communicate
The difficulty of moving to a new culture is that a lot of people would feel fear because they are so use to their own culture, so now they leave what they are used to a new way and it will be hard for them to adapt. Some may like the new food and the pace of life, then later on in the month’s people may feel like the new life and culture is unpleasant life for instance: public hygiene, the language barriers, traffic safety, and food accessibility. Still the most part in relocating to a different culture is the communication because they might not understand the language or might say the wrong word thinking it means the same in the other countries. People adjusting to a new culture often feel lonely and homesick because they are not yet
When people come from other countries to America, they usually come for a better life and they know in the back of their head that they’re going to put some effort fourth to assimilate to their new surroundings. I know it’s extremely difficult for foreigners to try and assimilate to English speaking people and I have experienced some of the struggle between the two parties, one party being myself. For the past 3 years I have associated myself with a Russian family that came from Russia looking for a better life for their two sons.
