Senior citizens are a key part of our community and function as the backbone to our society. To ensure that seniors have a meaningful contribution to the community we must develop quality relationships with them and also ensure that they have healthy and successful lives. Based on our experience at Taylor Yard Senior Housing Apartments we came to the conclusion that creating and maintaining relationships with elderly adults improves their health and well-being. In the article Building Living Alliances: Community Engagement and Community-Based Partnerships to Address the Health of Community Elders by Kim E. Radda and Jean J. Schensul they discuss how building and creating relationships or alliances not only with other members of your community
Individuals between the ages of 80-84 are the fastest growing segment of the population in the state of Maryland. Of the nearly 5.7 million people in Maryland in 2010, 18.6% were over the age of 60. It is expected that this percentage will increase to 25.8% of Maryland’s projected population of 6.7 million by the year 2030. With these and similar statistics in mind, it is imperative, then, that the present groundswell of intergenerational initiatives continue to rise to meet this increasing demand. To that aim, this document proposes the Adopt-a-Grandfriend Project, pairing 8th grade James Madison IB World Middle School students with residents of Collington Life Care Center’s nursing and
The 70806 of Baton Rouge, LA consists of a diverse community of college students, low income and middle class income areas. Driving through the community reveals income inequality, poverty and opulence, homelessness and extravagant houses, healthy youth and elderly sick individuals. It was a challenge to assess the 70806 due to the great diversity but a much greater challenge to come up with viable.
A major influence on health in a community is the availability of services and opportunities within the neighborhood. Public health can be further influenced by the social environments. Accessibility to health care along with education and employment opportunities are fundamental factors to be considered (Riegelman & Kirkwood, 2015). These elements create both advantages and disadvantages for those living within the neighborhood. If we want to improve public health outcomes, we must consider and evaluate these along with many other contributing factors.
Community assessment, a key process in community health nursing, aims to evaluate the needs, resources, and challenges of a given community. The information gathered from the assessment is crucial to formulating health promotion objectives and activities that are geared to improve the general public’s health (Nies & McEwen, 2015). To complete this community assessment, I utilized methodological approaches to collect quantitative and qualitative data, which include several interviews from key informants, a windshield survey, and a review of published reports and census data. Thus, this paper intends to present a comprehensive profile of my community, identify perceived and actual threats, and recognize relevant health improvement opportunities for my neighborhood.
Relatively new to this research are the correlations found between living environments and improved health and well-being for the people who live there. Employment and business opportunities also arise to support and maintain services for this vastly growing cohort. Ideas are being put forth now to create urban communities for senior living that will embrace continued learning and service opportunities. Aging-In-Place models, where seniors remain at home and in the community in which they have always lived is argued in research entitled, Innovative Models of Aging in Place: Transforming our Communities for an Aging Population (Bookman). Membership in a community can build relationships and identify common interests and purpose, as well as integrated settings to help promote meaning in the “golden years”. Bookman states that this is a global phenomenon and that in 1950 only 8% of the world population was over 60. Less than 70 years later that has changed dramatically, with the largest increase occurring in the most developed nations. The many benefits are people who are not only living longer, but leading active and healthy lives into ones 80’s and 90’s. The wisdom, experience and skills of this older population are available to family, friends and the communities for many decades. On the other hand, there are also
Like Many other schools encourage students to become involved in service learning projects. They are designed to help the community while students gain experience solving real world problems. Many of the schools do things to help their community by doing things like organizing litter pick-ups, tutoring younger children, or conducting a health fair. Well it is time for Crawford County Community Schools to start there involvement with the service learning projects. One thing that Crawford County really needs the kids and everyone to focus on now is the litter all over Crawford County.
The purpose of this report is to critically analyse key areas of practice with regard to the Healthy Living for Seniors Program (HLSP) from the perspective of a volunteer. Uniting Care Aging is a non-profit and non-government organisation; and a ministry of the Uniting Church that provides, government, church and client funded aged care services across Australia especially for Australians who are older and vulnerable. The program workers facilitate the group five days a week between 10am-3pm. The programs’ field of practice is ‘Aging’ and its major function is to link the individual, group, family or community with needed resources. Welfare practitioner’s in this program empower people and promote social justice, safety, well-being, and enhance
The community we decided to look at is in the north Crown Heights section of Brooklyn. The area we decided to focus on the surrounding blocks around the St. John’s Recreation center. The blocks we examine are from Utica Avenue & Albany Avenue and Park Place & Bergen Street. Our team decided to use this community due to most of the group members live and/or are familiar with this community. Being familiar with how the community used to have high crime rates, drug infested that housed many low income Black, West Indian, Jewish families to now having a decreased minority population and more upper class families are moving in. As a result more residents are being priced out of their community at an alarming rate (Chan, 2007). Crown Heights remains
Although institutionalized living facilities aim to meet the physical and emotional needs of their residents, the structure of most facilities also marginalize the older adults who live in them (Shentow-Bewsh, 2016). One example of such a living facility is the Terraces of Baycrest, a nonprofit retirement home for older adults aged 80-100+. This paper focuses on a change effort that could be implemented at the Terraces to reduce the marginalization of its residents.
Community Senior Centers are gateways to the aging population and its communities to obtain information, resources and recreational needs. Senior Centers have great impact to the older adult to manage their health, finances, well-being, peer interaction and increase of their independence. Many support services are accessible to this population and can be beneficial to the Kew Gardens Senior Center.
SSU is located in the incorporated city of Rohnert Park but also borders Cotati, the smallest incorporated community in Sonoma County. In the 2010 census, Rohnert Park had a recorded population of 40,971 and Cotati had a population of 7,265. Though the Community Borrowers program, visitors not affiliated with SSU can check out materials if they are 18 years and older (kids can check out through their parent’s card). A Community Borrowers card costs $10 for three months. Most individuals associated with SSU, CSU, Santa Rosa Junior College, and Cotati/Rohnert Park School District teachers can borrow materials free of charge.
What is Social Gerontology? Social gerontology is a specialization that centers on the social aspects of growing old. The program is designed to create a friendly and active environment for older or disabled adults with health condition an enjoyable opportunity for meeting and reunion during the day. The community that I would like to bring my focus upon would be the West Garfield Community and the poverty that goes on within that community. The cause of the gang relate homicide violence within that community would be the lack of resources, joblessness, poverty, and the destruction of the black families. The violence that goes on inside that community that hinders the community from growing and I would say the funding for different programs will do some justice. However, West Garfield is a predominately African American community. However, after reading Nytimes.com violent crimes are up 56 percent compared to last year and the question is why? Therefore, Blacks were put into these areas that’s considered to be the ghetto to not succeed
According the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), 549,928 people were experiencing homelessness on a single night in January 2016 (Henry, Watt, Rosenthal & Shivji, 2016). Families account for 37% of the homeless population (Holtrop, Mneil & McWey, 2015). Although the exact number of the homeless population in Hays County is currently unknown, the Hays County Food Bank (2016) reports show 25,120 residents are considered food insecure, including 8,990 children. Approximately 37 percent of the population in San Marcos lives below the federal poverty line, compared with 17.4 percent
