Twenty years ago, kids grew up playing outside. They would jump rope, ride bikes, and roller skate every hour of the day. Now, kids are growing up without these things because they would rather spend time swiping on their iPads, playing video games for hours, or watching all of the new shows on Netflix. The main difference between these generations is the use of technology. Within those twenty years, technology has been rapidly evolving to aid in the creation of laptops, tablets, and smart phones. These new gadgets that claim to make life “easier” constantly surround us. Have we ever thought about how these constant exposures to electronics affect the generations that are being raised on technology? Children should be restricted from using electronic devices until they are 2 years old to prevent developmental delays, health issues, and social skills. Children under the age of two should not be exposed to smart devices, including and not limited to smart phones, electronic tablets, and laptops. Dr. Carolyn Jaynes, a Leapfrog Enterprises learning designer, said, “Children under two years of age learn best from real-world experiences and interactions” (qtd. in Brown). When infants spend too much time in front of a screen, they are not using their senses to learn and discover in real world situations. The global dispute that centers on technology, ranging from basic machines to the internet of things, is a very broad one. To each person the use of electronics means something different, some despise the rate in which the world is turning to robots and some praise the idea of the world turning into the real life version of the movie “Back to The Future”. If you walk around randomly asking questions about the future and technology, you are most definitely going to get a wide decree of answers. It seems though, as a unified decision that the world is in favor of such changes and will continue to move towards movies like “23”.
Modern Technology is good for the developing brain of a child.When using any modern technology like Ipad, Iphone, Ipod, laptop computer anything, when using these amazing their brains are constantly being used. Each icon they click each word they read each picture or color they see is all recorded in their brains. When a child is on a application, that child zooms in on the activity which causes a chain reaction to the brain keeping the brain active, and exercising. “The impact of heavy media and technology use on kids are social, emotional and cognitive development is only beginning to be studied, and the emergent results are serious.” This quote proves of my statement because it says that a child’s emotional and cognitive development are being affected by technology. There are a lot of brain exercises on the internet. As our generations and technological world has vastly began to develop and expand rapidly, a repeated debate of whether technology use for young babies and children is beneficial or harmful to the physical and cognitive development of the child. As research has taken place to determine more answers around this topic, experts and parents from all different generations cast their opinion on the matter.
According to a 2010 Kaiser Foundation study, which involved elementary children, concluded that on average 75 percent of parents allowed their children to have bedroom TV’s, North American households keep their TV’s on for 50 percent of the day, and use 7.5 hours of technology entertainment per day (Rowan). Technology is becoming a problem throughout the United States, especially in elementary aged kids. Parents are introducing technology as early as infants so that they understand certain information at an early age. When parents introduce technology at such an early age they are giving their children the advantage to be addicted to the wonders of it. Young children are at a high risk of brain damage with the advancement of technology. The more adults introduce technology to younger children the higher the chances of problems it causes. Technology has a negative effect on younger children and should have limitations on the age in which it is being introduced.
My research project was inspired by my love of children and the many times I have observed children using technology. From this experience I noticed many young children are extremely familiar with technology and the use of technology can have both positive and negative effects on them. As I have researched into this topic, I have learnt there are many beneficial and harmful implications of technological use for children. A finding I have come across on multiple occasions is children should not be using or be in contact with any technology whilst they are under the age of 2. A positive implication includes using technology for educational reasons as opposed to entertainment purposes. Using technology for entertainment or for long periods of time can negatively affect the child psychologically. A key point from my research has lead me to understand technology can have a huge impact on a child’s mental, physical and emotional health. (154 words)

This article talks about the positive and negative impacts when exposing young children to technology. First, Read opens up the article explaining that by the time children start school, 70% are already confident in using a laptop, tablet or smart phone. Read also notes, that 17% of children under the age of three have their own device. The article then discusses that the American Academy of Pediatrics says that children under the age of two should be discouraged from using technology and that preschool kids shouldn’t be using devices for more than two hours per day (Read). Today children are exposed to a different world than the one their parents grew up in. Consumerism plays a significant influence in children’s lives, including technology. This has led to over usage of technology as a reason for increased health issues in children, and basic building blocks of healthy development being ignored. Children are no longer interested in creative play, which is vital to problem-solving, learning, imagining and thinking. Instead, children can often be found sitting in front of a television, for up to seven hours a day, with their back hunched over and in an almost zombie like state of mind.
Every day, the Generation Z/Boomlets, those born after 2001, are starting to interact more and more with technological devices. This can cause very serious consequences and it can affect their development, such as irregular sleeping pattern, lack empathy, social and language skills and health issues. The Common Sense organization did some research and discovered that 10 percent of one year olds have used a technology device. They also found out that 38 percent of children between two and four years old have used mobile devices like iPhone, tablets or Kindles and more than fifty percent between ages five to eight years old also use mobile devices. How can kids have this much access to technological devices at such a young age? I remember I didn’t have my first phone until the ninth grade and it was a flip phone; I received my first iPhone in my senior year of high school. Kids these days are growing up too fast and interacting more and more early with technology and besides affecting their development, this will come back to affect our future.
Children from two years old to the age of ten years old can be effected in a negative way. Sometimes parents give their children a tablet or their cell phone to entertain them while they try and get something important done. Sometimes they are out in public and their child is being too loud so they pull out the phone and let them watch T.V. on it so they can become quiet. Technology has become a part of our daily lives, our entertainment and our main source of information. Every day we use some sort of device, even kids as young as one or two. But giving young children electronic devices, such as phones and tablets, can negatively affect their development as they grow.
American children in today’s world spend too much time with electronic devices. Without so much time spent with an electronic device children could have better critical thinking skills, there would be lower childhood obesity rates and there would be fewer behavior problems. Electronic devices can be wonderful forms of entertainment but children in some American families need to spend less time in front of electronic device screens. Since one electronic device is in most households in America that may lead a child into using that as their only form of entertainment, which is not a good habit to grow up on.
We all know technology is a good thing, right? Or is it? We can all come up with reasons why technology is helpful or appropriate like we can for a particular medicine. And while some drugs are really great to cure or prevent a disease, sometimes the side effects outweigh any possible benefit. The same is true with technology. Some common negative side effects of technology are kids playing on their phones instead of going outside to play or young people not interacting face-to-face as much as they used to. Technology has transformed society and has become an important part in daily life in various forms, such as television, cell phones and computers. It has eased numerous tasks and issues in the educational, medical and engineering fields. It has also provided a means of communication to contact people around the world without difficulty. As society evolved and more technologies were developed to support the changes, parents depended more on these technologies as a learning tool for their young children and has become the norm in parenting for the twenty- first century. Over time, children have increased their time on their digital devices, spending less time with family and friends, “Children and youth get an average of 7 hours and 48 minutes of screen time per day.” (Active Healthy Kids Canada, n.d.) The amount of time spent on their electronic devices plays a critical role in their growth and development. The overuse of these devices can cause issues in the child’s cognition, health and social relationships. The excessive dependency on technology in society affects the development of children negatively, thus leading to a problematic lifestyle in adulthood.

When during that time there were no computers and the only phone you had was connected to the wall. In this new age, we have advanced so much that now information is just a click away in the palm your hands 24/7. All this advancement was possible only with the creation of two devices, the laptop and a cell phone.
