Isn’t it interesting the way technology can bring a positive and negative influence on society? Technology has a huge impact on society. In fact, we all somehow have experienced this effect every single day of our lives. Whether it is messaging a friend on your phone, driving your car to work, or surfing the internet on your computer, it takes a toll on the growth of our economy, our culture and our way of life. This reoccurring theme of technology having a positive and negative effect on society appears in literature.
One of the most famous novels in which this appears in, is known as, Frankenstein or
The Modern Prometheus, written by the English author Mary Shelly in 1818.

“The different accidents of life are not so changeable as the feelings of human nature.” (Shelly 42) The creation had changed Victors point of view on human nature. This intelligence should have limits because it may cause destruction. One must always take precaution when creating something because then it can backfire badly. The AI Researchers also are hold responsibility in a respectable manner towards their creations as well. They must watch them so they wont backfire. Their “oath” very much relates to Asimov’s Laws, and they must be responsible towards the robots because they could be harmful, much like
Frankenstein and his creature. In Frankenstein, after Victor’s experiences he learned his lesson on not to temper with nature and he did not want to pursue galvanism anymore.
The AI Researchers know that the robots’ behaviors are unpredictable, however they are prepared for it due to their deep understanding of their field of study. The laws that were mentioned in the article from Asimov can be applied to the novel. For instance, the creature cannot harm humans, it must obey the orders of Victor Frankenstein, and

If it was actually applied in the novel, then none of these catastrophic events would have occurred in the novel. Thus, there are many similarities between the article and the book. Ultimately, the novel Frankenstein, and the article, “The Frankenstein Complex and Asimov‘s Three Laws”, both deal with the topic of technology having both positive and negative effects on society. Frankenstein had created a creature that he had not really taken full responsibility towards until the end. This resulted negatively since all of his closest friends and family members had died in effect. This represents how technology can have a negative effect on society. In the article, “The Frankenstein Complex and
Asimov‘s Three Laws”, McCauley discussed Asimov’s Laws and where people stood on the approval over it, “The Frankenstein Complex”, and artificial intelligence and using it with robots. McCauley had stated that AI Researchers had better modified Asimov’s
Laws so they could better fit with the study of Artificial Intelligence. Both texts were also similar in the topics of Faust, creators’ responsibilities towards creations, and laws. Therefore, technology can influence our lives and society in a positive and negative
This not only effects, the society but it affects the person as they lose their sense with the real world. The biggest problem with technology is the lack of knowledge people have due to their over reliance of it, and if technology is removed altogether our society will continue to thrive and flourish in areas that require us to think for ourselves.
Impact of Technology On Society Sesan Akerewusi University of Windsor Abstract Technology surrounds us and has dramatically affected the way we live in this present society. From entertainment devices such as the television, communication devices such as the iPhone, life-saving devices such as defibrillators and educational devices such as Microsoft and Apple computers, technology appears to have numerous benefits in certain fields of human life. Today, technology and human lifestyle are like a set that cannot be separated. According to research conducted by technology enthusiast Lulu Chang, the average human spends an alarming 4.7 hours a day on his/her phone, and 8.4 hours a day on media devices in general (Chang, 2015). We live in an
Frankenstein, written by author Mary Shelley, was a romantic based story written in Europe during the eighteen hundreds. During this time period, Europe was experiencing many social and economic changes. Many of these changes were a product of the industrial revolution of Europe. This time period can be defined and era of exploration, discovery and industrialization in which ideas were pushed to the limits. Victor’s creation of Frankenstein is a reflection of the industrial revolution and a scientific era in which the borders of the possible are pushed and society is forced to face a monster of their own.
Romanticism as defined in the American Heritage dictionary is a movement "characterized by a heightened sense in nature, emphasis on the individual's expression of emotion and imagination, and rebellion against established social rules and conventions." Technology is defined as "the practical application of knowledge especially in a." Mary Shelley joins these two realms in Frankenstein, to create one of the most memorable characters in literature, Victor Frankenstein.
There is nothing more profound about the topic of science and technology than its ability to be a partner in helping to save lives. It is so influencial in coming up with the latest drugs to combat harmful and even deadly diseases and viruses such as AIDS, and some cancers. We are where we are today because of the remarkable innovations in science and technology. The idea that lives can be saved from such innovations as a new flu vaccine, or a new type of antibiotic that can battle chicken pox, and many other diseases. Its all about the advancements that we get from science and technology that let us live the way we do. Now, we dont have to worry about dying from the chicken pox or
Modern science has dramatically evolved over the past years, there is a concern on whether or not people will try to play God with such developments and what damaging consequences could occur. Body modifications, cloning, Genetic engineering, and various fields in biotechnology are prime examples of fields that are attaining great advancements in a swift manner that increase concerns over the consequences. Progress in science induces people to question what it means to be a human and their own human nature, just as it causes people to question the effects that scientific progress may have on their good fortune, happiness or common welfare. The protagonist of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, Victor Frankenstein is incited to advance the field of
“Here we find nature to be the circumstance which[…] judges like a god all men that come to her.” is one of the first statements by Ralph Waldo Emerson in his essay “Nature”, referring to nature’s role in romanticism. Nature, as well as science, are one of the main topics depicted in writings of the romantic period. Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein can be attached to these writings. Her novel implies many natural and scientific characteristics that approach throughout the novel and finally clash by Victor Frankenstein’s creation of the monster. The following essay states the importance of nature and science in Frankenstein and argues that Frankenstein’s monster is a personalization of the danger involved in connecting both nature and science.
Sure, we see Victor Frankenstein first attempting to learn the secrets of nature by consulting classic works of the occult in Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley's Frankenstein. The truth is, he is curious about a real-world science by observing his professors. Which annex the idea of how magic can be considered as a science since every element can affect a human by our 5 senses. To support the thesis, on pages 34 and 35 “If, instead of this remark, my father had taken the pains to explain to me that the principles of Agrippa had been entirely exploded and that a modern system of science had been introduced which possessed much greater powers than the ancient, because the powers of the latter were chimerical, while those of the former were real and practical, under such circumstances I should certainly have thrown Agrippa aside and have contented my imagination, warmed as it was, by returning with greater ardour to my former studies. This is the moment where science becomes more empirical”(Shelley 34,35). This is the main cause of what made Victor Frankenstein fulfill his curiosity of modern science because the modern science has taken some ideas from medieval science and feels creative of doing this action.
Frankenstein by Mary Shelley explores the fight between man and nature through the story of eager scientist Victor Frankenstein, who artificially creates life from the body parts of the deceased with disastrous consequences. By highlighting the intense power of nature, Shelley comments on the folly of attempting to subjugate nature to bend to one’s will.
The advancement of technology has made a dramatic impact on society. This can be referred back to the invention of the printing press during the mid-1400’s. The printing press helped the Protestant Reformation be successful because it allowed people to become aware of what was occurring in their society. What the Protestant Reformation did was expose the Christian church from its false ideal of how to get into heaven. With the help of the printing press, the Protestant Reformation was successfully noticed. Technology today still exposes society to events happening throughout the world. For example, we are able to keep up with politics, our government, and things occurring all around the world thanks to the use of computers
Technology has its positives such as sharing data along with providing information to many all around the world, but the truth is that the “process” is sometimes harmful. Technology has great innovation and intentions but, due to excessive use, cannot be beneficial towards society. The solutions that have been provided for the following two lenses are possible advancements that may occur in the process of making technology a more beneficial and positive aspect rather than it being negative. Another problem that is usually brought up is towards the fact about money and how it will be issued for these solutions to work. Money can still be supported from the government and organizations on behalf of a small portion. Still, for immediate effect to occur; minor donations that would be made by society will also make a vast impact towards new technological advances. Yes, it is true that technology is not all bad because it has provided healthcare, travel, and accessibility of information. However, the end result is usually not beneficial towards society due to the procedure of it being used. More technological devices such as the new Tesla car, medical enhancements, and 3D Printing are all wonderful changes, but uncertain at the same time due to the cost and risks of it. All of these are positive outcomes, but sometimes are still used in a negative affect and still have the issue
Science is the knowledge gained by a systematic study, knowledge which then becomes facts or principles. In the systematic study; the first step is observation, the second step hypothesis, the third step experimentation to test the hypothesis, and lastly the conclusion whether or not the hypothesis holds true. These steps have been ingrained into every student of science, as the basic pathway to scientific discovery. This pathway holds not decision as to good or evil intention of the experiment. Though, there are always repercussions of scientific experiments. They range from the most simplistic realizations of the difference between acid and water to the principle that Earth is not the center of
Technology is continuously developing and has begun creating shortcuts for the American society. As a society we need to find a balance between our technological use and our everyday life. In my opinion, society has become too dependent on technology. The more advanced technology becomes, the more it seems to be gaining control over our lives. Even though technology is offering society many beneficial qualities; it also is causing many negative effects to occur. Technology is affecting society socially, mentally, and physically.
Though, it can be an advantage for the society, but it is demolishing traditions in the long run. This is evident that technology id suppressing a negative impact to the society.
The need for power continues to be the revolving need to show who's on top. The fight and struggle to continue one’s power sometimes puts the ones we love in danger. Many people will do anything to contain their position and make sure no one takes it from them. In Frankenstein the need for power is not only a physical aspect but also emotional and mental. Some find power in an object, others find it in themselves that they’ve developed, or people were born with an ability to do more than the average person. The power to pursue god’s work and create life is the power Victor Frankenstein seeks to have. The power the monster has to find love for himself and will stop at nothing to find closure in the life Victor has put him in.
