Technology gives students up to date information to work with when doing projects and assignments. Maslin and Nelson’s article Peering into the Future: Students Using Technology to Create Literacy Products the early education classroom in this article formed reading posters of their favorite books and famous figures. These students did research on the computer and put together a book review poster. Students in these classrooms are doing research while using technology to publish these posters. “These activities engage children in reading, writing, and publishing as ways of responding to intermediate level literature and sharing insights, reactions, and the appreciation of books with others”(Maslin and Nelson pg.628). Students find technology motivating when doing work. In all four interviews conducted teachers or professionals that use technology with students agreed that students had more motivation to do the work when using technology. In an interview with Nicole Ball she stated that students at the beginning hard a hard time adjusting that the iPads were learning resources and not for playing games. But after hers students start to work with them she notes that “, the students are engaged… by this point in the year students are still eager to use technology everyday and learn from it.” In the article Technology in Literacy Education: Stories about Struggling Readers and Technology by Anderson and Balajthy teacher Rachel states that “this generation of students is more inclined to read online, she wanted to feel confused that she could match her students with the just right online books.” (Anderson and Balajthy pg 540). Rachel talks about how technology helps to keep her students interested in the reading and with new books being available everyday not having to buy the bound books and using the ebooks is beneficial. I personally can relate to this I am finding myself more likely to use technology to do something rather than not, it does seem motivating that with technology we don’t have to completely rewrite what we have written for the next draft we can edit it and most of our work is already done for …show more content…
In an interview Bergmann stated “Technology benefits us a lot, we have a reward system that is positive reinforcement which we use technology a lot with this. We encourage students to do there best with writing and when something is done well we reinforce that moment with technology so that they can have time to use technology.” Bergmann uses technology in her work due to the fact that she works in an area where technology outside of the classroom is not as common. Her work uses technology as a reinforcement for students that have done good work to do with grammar, writing or even mathematics. These students know that if they work hard and strive to learn they will be rewarded for that which is the reason they are motivated to do good work. Jordan Plummer in the interview with her also agreed that technology was motivating to her students: “Students love using the computer so it does help to drive their motivation to get started. They(students) also love watching videos and that format really helps to engage learners and provide them with a simpler way to comprehend information to write about
Technology helps students who have reading troubles when it comes to reading standard books. There are also many benefits of digital enhancement such as changing colors and fonts. Entrenching learning supports in content helps comprehension and building background examples; definitions, summaries, and key questions can be directly embedded to help with guide reading. Technology allows students to manipulate the text by copy and pasting.
Whilst investigating my literacy topic on placement I decided to not only interview my mentor teacher but also interview two students to gain their perspective on the use of technology. I believed their point of you view was valuable to my findings and wanted to discover firsthand if students are enjoying and finding the use of technology helpful in their literacy classes. Whilst assisting on placement I approached two children and interviewed them at different times, the two children in particular were very forward and honest when sharing their opinions with me. From their opinions they expressed in the short interview (refer to Appendix 1) it is evident the two students would rather read an eBook than a book and find it exciting and fun, this would cause more engagement and focus on the text. The two students also mentioned that pictures in the eBook are animated and this helps make sense of the story. It is clear that an interactive reading experience, acquires students with a greater comprehension of a text (Hutchison, Beschorner and Schmidt-Crawford 2012). These findings support my research question relating to the importance of learning literacy with the assistance of technology. Another artefact to support this matter (refer to Appendix 2) is a task students completed, which involved them writing up a draft of a poem and later they were to type up the final copy. A number of students were completing their draft on a laptop, I asked the teacher why they were not
Traditional methods of obtaining literacy information have been replaced with new technology such as, Kindles, laptops, cell phones and computers. Technology is the new gateway to collect information for educational purposes or casual reading. Numerous studies have examined the effectiveness of using technology for gathering up-to-date resources. In the past, the method of obtaining information for a school project was from outdated books, this method is still valuable, but for the constant inflow of information, technology is undeniably a quicker and more resourceful means. The variety of online resources a person can use for in, accomplishing tasks such as finding information for learning can be, websites that contain journals, documents
This research paper examines the benefit of the incorporation of technology when teaching literacy in the kindergarten classroom. It searches the advantages and disadvantages of the implementation of technology from the use of smartboards, iPads, iPhones, mp3 devices, tablets, computers, and software. The literature review provides an understanding of the different uses of technology and the positive and
I think the greatest part of technology and Children’s literacy is that it is mobile. We can get more stories to kids and adults, who struggle with reading or those who have physical or cognitive disabilities. My husband spent two hard long years driving for a long haul trucking company, but he developed a love for books on tape. We are talking about a man who would have never thought of reading as a form of entertainment. I wish that kind of thinking was an “ah-ha” for everyone. I understand that it changes things, I understand that it might take the “book” out of the picture, but I feel it can enhance learning for so many!
Technology has revolutionized the human experience by changing the way one learns. Technology can best be defined as a tool that supports and promotes human learning. This can be seen through the usage of calculators, tablets (example: iPad), Smart Boards, video cameras, and, of course, the computer. These are all innovations that can have a profound impact on classroom learning. Although there are some schools that have a strict policy that technology should be removed from the modern day classroom, other schools believe that integrating technology into the classroom helps prepare our students for the elaborate world they will face going forward. Throughout this essay, I will be focusing on the technology policy and how it has a positive
This article attempts to enlighten educators to allow computers in the classroom as a workshop to help improve literacy. The computer allows for students to have both a visual and a verbal reference to a topic, thus, solidifying a concrete comprehension of the text, allowing the student to be further engaged and stimulated with the assignment. Over the years, educators have seen such a vast change in technology, especially in the classroom. It is time now, that educators embrace the change and use it to their advantage. “If students can be motivated and engaged when using technology, teachers should continue to support this type of learning when appropriate.”
The education system around the world has progressed and changed in a plentiful amount of ways, and the concept of knowledge and learning has changed in modern day. For example, certain schools around the globe are moving on to implementing technology in classrooms because it provides many benefits and statistical research that states how students are improving their academic readiness because of the instant access to information, a greater engagement and interactive process in learning, and the personalization that instructors can do towards the educational experience that students receive. The benefits of technology in class can be rather debatable, for there are people who think it's a distraction, but it certainly seems to be beneficial according to the increase of passing percentages in schools.
Technology can help students in all areas of study. Students need to be able to use this technology since, “Currently and in the near future, it is understood that students need to acquire more autonomous skills of ‘information gathering, analysis, and display’” (Todnem, 2004, p. 1). Furthermore, the use of technology, mainly the internet, provides for variation since “Students find themselves bored and burnt-out of the lecture format to classes, so changing the curriculum and instruction to include things like online assignments and educational videogames can be one clear remedy” (Todnem, 2004, p. 1). Teachers who have implemented technology into their classrooms have noticed changes in their students. The most common of these effects being an increase in motivation. In “Effects of Technology on Classrooms and Students” another positive effect is given “technology effect stressed by many teachers was enhancement of student self esteem” (“Effects,” 2004, p. 2).
There is much in the literature regarding the use of technology in education. According to Dede (2009), Banister (2010), Peled and Schocken (2014), my topic can be characterized as technology in education is an effective tool for motivating student engagement, increasing academic success, and providing new environments for students to learn. Thus, the more technology that is incorporated in a students’ earlier grades, the more inclined they will be to prefer that type of instruction in their latter years. It is an important topic with respect to education because the wave of new technology is increasing at rate never before seen in the field of education. These articles track the study of technology use in the field, and how they are beneficial for my study of technology in education. All of the articles support the idea of the use of technology in education, and each represent a different aspect in which technology can improve a child’s education.
Due to technology, students can access books, use calculators, get immediate access to information, turn in homework and teachers can assign homework out through websites and blogs—even through twitter. Schools save money buying the online textbook rather than buying paperback textbooks for the entire school. For example, I graduated from Bartlett High School and last year for the first time they gave all the freshmen MacBook laptops to use during the school year. Students accessed their textbooks online, and used their laptops during class. Schools don’t have to worry about books getting damaged anymore or distributing them on specific days. Even electronic novels can be bought and read online. It makes it more fun for the students and convenient to schools and teachers.
Identified Phenomena Does the impact of teacher instructional technology with new literacy instruction improve elementary (K-5) student achievement in reading vocabulary?
John Dewey, a leader for the progressive movement in education in the United States once said, “If we teach today as we taught yesterday, we rob our children of tomorrow.”
Modern technology is both a hindrance and a help on a student’s education. In any given classroom, one can often find students stealthily texting their friends or scrolling through Facebook on their cellphones. Students are fascinated by the shiny pieces of technology in their pockets, especially when the teacher is talking about something with which they are not particularly fascinated. Although technology can detract from the learning experience, it can also add to it. Speaking from experience, I am not sure how I would have written my eleventh grade research paper without the Internet. My research paper had many sources, only two of which were physical books. The Internet gave me access to information that the library simply did not have. While it has distracted many students (including myself) from school, it is also an essential resource for many students’ schoolwork.
The use of technology has the ability to allow teachers to teach the student, instead of teaching the grade level. Jon Bower, CEO of Lexia Learning Systems, points this fact out when he states,
