One of the most controversial issues of education in the 21st century is technology. Educators and parents across the nation debate whether to let technology into classrooms. And if so, how? Technology should be introduced into education through the program most commonly referred to as BYOD (Bring Your Own Device). The idea of BYOD is to have students bring their own phones, tablets and computers to school. Technology is a much more engaging, and educational than standard supplies. Mobile technology exists all around us. This is especially true for students. Unlike adults, these kids have grown up in technology and have used it their whole lives. Mr. Schad, who started the program in a school district near Houston, puts it like this, "On a smartphone, there are no limitations. This is the world they live in, and we're bringing it into the classroom." Classroom still use very outdated technology. Some schools are still trying to buy a school set of computers. Even this becomes hard after a multitude of budget cuts hit schools this past year. BYOD is a much cheaper way to approach the technological issue. Instead of buying new devices, schools can take advantage of already owned products. If a student can not afford their own device, then schools can work with that family to formulate a solution to the specific issue.
