Socialization refers to the lifelong process of inheriting and scattering norms, and customs providing an individual with the skills and habits necessary for participating within their own society. The socialization agents that can affect sociology are family, peer group, school, media and culture. The Ted Talk – The Gender Binary by Yee Won Chong – included the agents, family, culture and peers. The first force to shape the individuals behaviour is the family. The way a child first learns values and acceptable behaviours are from his or her family. The child then carries these learned values and behaviours into social settings. Families teach a child how to act and the necessary skills to act appropriately when the child is on his or her own. Social behaviours are a result of interactions and lessons in the home, which are then reflected in their interactions with others in society. Gender relations and gender identities are critical aspects of culture because they shape the way daily life is lived in the family, but also in the larger community and within the workplace. Gender (like race or ethnicity) functions as an organizing principle for society because of the cultural meanings given to being male or female. This is apparent in the overall understanding of gender. In most societies, there are obvious patterns of “women’s work” and “men’s work,” both in the household and in the wider community, and cultural explanations support this. The patterns and explanations vary among societies and change over time. In Malaysia where Yee Won Chong was living, had poor human rights and homosexuals were punished through caning.
