When I arrived here at college I was extremely disappointed with the selection of food here in the cafeteria. I frequently found myself eating only hamburgers and pizza over and over again, simply because I did not like the other choices. About four months into the school year I had do go to the doctor for a virus and when the nurse weighed me I was a little surprised by what I saw. I had gained a little over ten pounds, close enough to what some refer to as the “Freshman 15.” It is a common fear among college students that they are going to gain fifteen pounds during the course of adjusting to college life. However experts have stated that the idea of the so called “Freshman 15,” is not that accurate. Every college student is obviously
Standardized tests are administered to allow reliable and valid comparisons to be made among students taking the test. Two major types of standardized tests are currently in use; norm-referenced and criterion-referenced. A norm-referenced test is a test that has been given to representative samples of students such that norms of performance are established. Each student taking the test receives a score that can be compared to the norm or normal or sample of students. The scores are then reported in percentiles. The main purpose of these tests is to rank students along a distribution of performance. Because of this tests are likely to have items that are very difficult for the grade level so students can be

Matt Lamkin’s “A Ban On Brain-Boosting Drugs is Not the Answer” first appeared in Chronicle of Higher Education in 2011. In this essay Lamkin aims to convince his reader not to deter improper conduct with threats, but to encourage students to engage in the practice of education. Lamkin tells us “If colleges believe that enhancing cognition with drugs deprives students of the true value of education, they must encourage students to adapt that value as their own” (642). Appeal to logic, consistency, and compare/contrast are techniques Lamkin skillfully uses to create a strong effective essay.

Illinois’ road to adopting social emotional learning standards began in 2003 with a statewide task force, which led to passing the Children’s Mental Health Act. The act required the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) to create social and emotional learning standards. It also required every school district in Illinois to create and adopt SEL policy. In 2004, ISBE formalized the standards, making Illinois the first state in the country to mandate implementation of social emotional learning policies. As a result, Illinois has collected data regarding the effectiveness of standards. Along with five other states (California, Kansas, Pennsylvania, Texas, and Washington), the groundwork has been set by Illinois to show benefits and impact

While Iowa’s top corporate income tax rate of 12% is the highest in the nation, the state did not always tax corporate income at such high levels. When corporate income collections began in 1934, the tax rate was a flat 2% at all levels of corporate income. As the state economy expanded, lawmakers gradually raised the flat rate, until all corporate income was taxed at 4% in 1965. Upon raising the corporate rate again in 1967, the state moved from a flat rate to a graduated rate, which maintained the bottom rate of 4% while adding brackets at 6% for income over $25,000 and 8% over $100,000 (Iowa Dept. of Revenue, 2016). Because most businesses earn over $100,000 in revenue during a given year, the average Iowa business saw their income tax

Currently, I am student teaching at Alfred E. Zampella PS #27 School in the district of Jersey City. The school is located in a busy city, next to John F. Kennedy St. which is especially busy in the morning and during rush hour. This results in several late students on a day to day basis. On the other hand, this school is also highly accessible and as a little over a thousand students. The school has grade levels from kindergarten to 8th grade, and has a mix of general, special, and inclusion education classrooms. Typically, families that enroll their students into this school are of lower-middle socio-economic class, and tend to be majority Hispanic, Indian, and African American, with few Caucasians and Asians. This school provides a variety of special programs for their ESL students and special need students. Students may be offered speech language pathology, occupational therapy, physical therapy, ESL programs, reading recovery, and counseling.
