Being born and raised in San Antonio, Texas, I was exposed to many different cultures. A few of which were Hispanics and German. They both had different languages and customs. My mom would take us to a festival in San Antonio yearly that was called the “Texas Folklife Festival”. There, our family would experience many different cultures with singing, dancing, food, art, and language. Our family enjoyed learning about the different places others came from and how they celebrated their heritage. Learning to appreciate where others came from and their back ground, gave me a better appreciation for differences.
The privilege to move to California has exposed me to many different cultures. This has allowed me to grow in many ways. The opportunity to listen and learn was there for the taking and I indulged. I now live in a neighborhood filled with people much different from myself My children's classrooms are filled with people from around the globe. I also have a diverse group of friends that I very much enjoy and spend time with.

Growing up, I was surrounded by a juxtaposition of numerous cultures due to the fact that my dad is from Bangladesh, my mom is from India, my family is in the Middle East, and my childhood is rooted in a diverse area where I am surrounded by no one like myself. For my first trip this semester I went to the Houston Museum of Natural Science. I went to see the gladiator exhibit and to see the changes from the last time I visited the museum. The exhibit was full of interesting armor and weapons. It also showed how movies and real life differed in the ring. The functional style of the roman gladiator equipment was amazing. I have always been very interested in weapons and armor. I went to see the exhibit because of a video game. I recently aquired a game called For Honor which is about 3 factions at war. Although this class was only six weeks, it has improved my way of thinking. I have learned a lot through both of the books and the discussion each week. Throughout my entire life, I had to work for everything that I needed as a teenager. These jobs were not easy and many times I would have to come back home very sore. One of my friends from Michigan State who I learned about different cultures from was my friend Yuchen, or as he introduced himself to me Frank. Yuchen was born and raised in Shanghai China. Yuchen taught me a lot about Chinese culture and made me try new things that be immersed in Chinese culture. After spending time with Yuchen I wanted to learn some more about Arabic culture and some Arabic. As time went on I decided to transfer to Rutgers University where I would be closer to home and would be better able to learn more about my Arabic culture. While attending Rutgers University I began to learn more about my own culture and many other cultures on top of that. At Rutgers, I made a bunch of friends who are Indian and they have submerged me in Indian culture as well. After attending college, I gained a greater respect for the many different cultures and it made me want to learn more about cultures by interacting with the language on top of the cultural influences I already have dealt with. While being an Economics major at college has given me another view on the topic as well.
