“Helping Students Use Textual Sources Persuasively” by Margaret Kantz
In the article “Helping Students Use Textual Sources Persuasively,” Kantz explained to students as they write, how to use current texts to build a new original one. She argues that many undergraduate students cannot perform this idea correctly, because as they write they never had the opportunity to get taught to examine and synthesize a piece of writing correctly. Students need to understand how to view facts as claims, or view writing as a serial of creative ideas and drafts that drive to a final distinctive piece of work. In this article Kantz described how students think as they are writing, she used personal experiences, introduces “rhetorical situation,” and used
The Author Reid, E Shelley states the importance of writing, and the tools that college students have in order to create a well-organized, legible and informative essay. The article “Ten Ways to Think about Writing: Metaphoric Musings for College Writing Students” is divided in ten general principles of writing, showing clear examples of each principle through the work, She perfectly explains how reasoning and creativity could work together as a tutorial for college students essay writing.
"Helping Student Use Textual Source Persuasively" by Maragret Kantz, is a research about the mistakes most of us students make when researching for a paper. "We need a theory-based explanation, one grounded in the findings of the published research on the nature and reasons for our students ' problems with writing persuasive researched papers. To understand how to teach students to write such papers, we also need a better understanding of the demands of synthesis tasks." Like most students like to state the facts given to us by published articles and not finding out the "true" facts of the research. In her research she introduced Shirley. A highly educated sophomore. She comes from an educated family with great reading and writing skills. Shirley wrote a research paper on the Battle of Agincourt. While she did her research and only wrote about the so called fact/truth, she did not receive the academic grade she thought she would since her facts were there. She then presented her concern with her friend Alice. While Shirley defended her sources Alice states "You 're dealing with facts, so there aren 't too many choices. If you want to say something original you either have to talk about the sources or talk about the material..." This would keep Shirley narrative structure of her research paper but also give her an "argument and purpose". There are three causes Kantz states "1) Many students like Shirley misunderstand sources because they read them as stories. 2) Many students
In their book They Say I Say, Gerald Graff, Cathy Birkenstein, and Russel Durst outline strategies writers can use to avoid common mistakes often seen in academic writing. The book thoroughly outlines the different components that make up academic writing, such as initially summarizing what others have said before, responding with original ideas, proving a purpose to the writing, and connecting the writing in a logical and eloquent manner.
In the reading the author attempts to express her view that research is all about creativity, how researching a particular area is all thinking constructively to find a beneficial solution to a problem which other people can then use. Throughout the reading Kantz helps the reader understand how to use textual sources persuasively by exploring the idea that texts don’t always mean the same things to every reader. Throughout this piece Kantz tells the story of the learning experience of a particular student, Shirley. The piece continues to explain the differences between facts and opinions; facts are persuasive and are largely accepted by the clear majority of people, whereas opinions are statements
Raelynn was breaking. She was losing control of herself, the tightly leashed grip she had on every facet of her life was literally being handled over to this demon. To be honest, she didn't know if she enjoyed or despised it - perhaps both in fact. It was gratifying in some part to let someone this close to her and press their wants onto her, but it was also terrifying to her; what would they do? Actually, there was no surprise as to what Deathwing wanted from her; he was practically already telling her murmur by murmur, kiss by kiss, what he wanted.

Joseph Williams and Lawrence McEnerney, in the second chapter of Writing in College, discuss the writing process, addressing how to collect of evidence, draft, and revise. Evidence in the form of data, which comprises “all the information related to your assignment” (8), provides the specific support for an argument. In college, “Every assignment will ask you to look at your readings in a different way” (8), write Williams and McEnerney. Thus, key in the information collection process is properly “selecting and analyzing data” (8) in a manner relevant to the assignment. Williams and McEnerney suggest some basic methods to collect data, including reading and re-reading the material, while highlighting any relevant information and then narrowing
In the second article, Lancia (1997) begins by illustrating a student’s experience with “literary borrowing” (p. 470) in which he states that this borrowing has taken place within his classroom without his instruction to do so. He continues by discussing his design of a classroom study in which he attempted to identify patterns of literary borrowing. He states that his results show a “saturation with literature directly influences writing by providing important models for successful work” (p. 470). He then continues by discussing existing research on the influence of literature on students’ compositions. In summation the research he includes recognize the important role that literature plays in writing and that literary borrowing should not be viewed as plagiarism but as temporary use of ideas while developing his or her own writing style.
The purpose of a persuasive text is made to be evident, clear, and easy to identify. Fulfilling the purpose is not as straight forward. When writing a persuasive text, it is the author's job to argue a position and to change a reader's opinion of that position. The writer must be able to serve a clear, concise argument with persuasive techniques.

Writing is a powerful tool used to communicate one’s ideas and feelings with others. Students can be taught to convey their opinion through the use of supporting details and clear organization of their reasoning. Immersion in persuasive writing does not happen by chance. It requires a dynamic teaching environment in which persuasive writing is regularly and explicitly taught. Writing Workshop provides a gradual release of responsibility to students using modeling and guided practice. Students must be challenged to be constantly thinking, talking, drawing, and writing about what they are learning. Sharing one’s opinion is a very social activity, creating instant engagement and and energy in the classroom. Students validate one another’s
To become an author, you’ll have to learn how to integrate other people’s data or information and use it to make your writing or ideas stronger because you have a stronger support.” Writing emerges from writing “ -Sommers(pg.420). It adds a stronger substance into your ideas. As an academic writer in either middle school, high school or college, academic writing will make your paper stronger. You can use other people writing to make readers understand your topic better. You can compare other views or compare other people’s thought to explore other perspectives with the reader. Also, when readers can tell that you’ve done your own research, the writer shows that they have a good understanding of the topic they are writing about. Makes your paper seem more reliable because of your sources. There’s a credibility created. There are several methods you can use to put other people’s work into your writing. Summarising taking a shortened version of the writers words. Quoting is copying the exact words of the writer. Academic writing also have the characteristics of having a clear sense of purpose and audience. The method that’s used mainly in our class is answering the “ So What” question.. Do children really know what it is like to write everything by hand? With all of the technological advancements today’s children are being forced to use iPads, computers, etc. to do school work instead of using a pencil and paper. This is causing poor handwriting in the younger generations. I know that my children’s handwriting is terrible because of this and they are always asking why they have to learn to write legibly because they can just use a tablet or computer to turn things in. Bic’s advertisement to “Fight For Your Write” effectively persuades parents today to purchase their products through ethos, logos, and pathos.
The experienced educators show the importance of the writing process for effective communication. Despite the fact that the audience understanding is the writer's primary goal, you cannot treat the document as a product. Thus, Writing is a process that culminates in an efficient transmission of thoughts to a reader. According to Donald M. Murray, author of Teach Writing as a Process Not a Product, “writing is a process of discovery” (4), and it has three necessary steps: pre-writing,
Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and the social media world is one all like its own. The ability to communicate to large amounts of people has become easier through the development of these platforms and across the internet in general. The challenge is in carrying over the values and viewpoints held in the real world. The easiest way to imagine this dilemma is envision the process of translation. Switching from one language to another is difficult by itself. However, when you add the rest of the equation, which include emotion, vision, context, and rhetoric – it becomes an even heavier task. This is in part what I have learned through community based writing and in particular the National Day on Writing project. The art of persuasion and rhetoric is an ever-evolving art within the social media world.
