Two planes were flown into New York City hitting the towers of the World Trade Center. A third plane flew just right outside of Washington, D.C hitting the Pentagon. The last plane crashed into a field in Pennsylvania. All attackers got on to the planes safely and were prepared to take their own lives and the lives of others (a suicide attack). Although 9/11 is the worst terrorist attack in American history, it was not the first terrorist attack that the Islamic group al-Qaeda had on the United States (U.S). Another reason the attack could have been avoided is if back then America had better airport security. Back then pocket knives that were at most four inches long were allowed on board. The hijackers were able to get multiple knives, tear gas, mace, and similar chemicals. One last reason why the attack could have been avoided is if Zacarias Moussaoui a person who was involved with the attack was arrested and FBI members were allowed to search his property. CIA Refusal to Share Information with FBI When 9/11 happened, people looked at it as an immediate act on war. George W. Bush 's (The president at the time) administration stipulated war against terrorists. Well August 11th, 2011 President Bush was on vacation in Texas when five days earlier he had been warned about terrorist in the U.S. Bush brushed it off, just completely ignored it. There was even a paper titled: "Bin Laden Determined to Strike in US". During this same month everyone is continuing on with life as if everything will be "ok" even with this threat. Newspapers are speaking about a shark attack, radio stations are talking about Beyoncé 's new song, and at the movies "American Pie II" is the top movie in the box office. While these are the main focuses the hijackers are receiving training in gyms, learning how to fly a plane, buying knives, vests, and investing in money from banks. San Diego FBI agent Steven Butler knew what the CIA knew about the possible terrorist attack. Nawaf Alhamzi

This attack, carried out by nineteen Islamic extremists, was associated with al-Qaeda, and involved the hijacking of four airplanes. Two of those airplanes were hijacked and flown directly into the World Trade Center in New York City, New York. The third plane’s target was the Pentagon in Washington D.C., and the fourth plane was brought down in Pennsylvania where it is believed the passengers aboard fought the hijackers. This horrific day in history cost over 3,000 people their lives, and was labeled the worst attack on American soil since the attack on Pearl Harbor during World War II.

September 11, 2001 was a day that everyone who was old enough to remember will remember for the rest of their lives. I was in the fourth grade when the World Trade Centers were crashed into. I remember our principal coming on the intercom and saying that we were not allowed to turn our televisions on. I did not understand the magnitude of the situation until I got home and my parents explained it to me. I remember that every plane I saw over my head scared me and I was afraid that a plane was going to be crashed into my home or school. The general population reaction to the attack was that of hysteria and worry. People were afraid of flying. People also feared that this was only the precursor to an even bigger attack that was being planned on the United States. The public wanted someone to blame for the incident and they wanted to know why the government had not prevented the attack if they had been given intelligence that an attack might happen. The years leading up to this terrible day in history were full of tough decisions. No one can say that the government was not interested in terrorism at all. They had small departments in the FBI and CIA that looked at and interpreted terrorism related intelligence. The decisions the government had to make changed the United States forever. There was not one factor that defined how the government dealt with terrorism collectively. The government had to take into account not only the actions to take against
A plane, American Airlines Route 11, with 92 passengers on board, was hijacked by four Arab men with knives, led by Mohammed Atta. On the ground heard the air traffic controller them say, "Do not something stupid. There will not be put to any. We have other planes. "
On September 11th, 2001 the worst attack on American soil happened.Four planes were hijacked in a terrorist attack. During this event, all hijacking attempts were successful except one. The first two planes hit the twin towers in New York City. Then another plane hit the Pentagon near Washington D.C. The last hijacked plane was heading to Washington, D.C. to attack the capital. This attack however was not successful. This was due to several brave Americans on board who crashed the plane in a field in Pennsylvania. This devastating attack overall killed just about 3,000 American citizens (9/11 timeline (history) A&E Television Networks, LLC 2015, 5, May 2015). Because of this attack, America now felt the need to protect themselves
George W Bush, who just barely got elected, was the president of the United States during 9/11. His rating skyrocketed after the event due to both parties rallying around him, which helped to get the USA PATRIOT Act, just a month after 9/11, (Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism) Which basically gave law enforcement and intelligence agencies sweeping power to thwart terrorist plots. This was a major influence of the 21st century because what was not well known to the public at the time was that the act gave NSA (National Security Agency) Access to millions of citizens private information. This was a massive story in the summer of 2013 when the thousands of leaked documents reached the public. In addition to laws being passed were whole departments being created to address the new “War on Terror”. The Department of Homeland Security or the DHS is tasked with protecting the United States territory from terrorist threats and to respond to natural disasters. Currently, it is the third largest cabinet in the U.S government. The War in Afghanistan was a direct effect of the attacks and was originally supported by the U.S population, however as years passed with no real result, history began to repeat itself, with the majority of Americans opposing the war. The
Flying out or in of the country or even within has become more challenging since the 9/11 attacks. It takes more time to get through security which makes for a much earlier arrival time for those flying. Most airlines require an arrival two hours prior to their departure time. Many Americans have stopped flying altogether because of the hassle of airport security and out of fear. Before the attacks, airport security was more relaxed. Basic security measures were in place, but it was much different than today. Before the attacks, security screenings were set in place by the private companies, many which were outsourced to different security companies. Passengers were allowed to bring certain size blades, scissors, baseball bats and even sewing needles. All of these items have since been banned as a result of the attacks. Since the attacks, the Transportation Security Administration was created and the security screenings are now regulated by the federal government. Through TSA, passengers bags are checked for banned items, they screened for suspicious behavior, the explosive detection system was implemented, and the full body scanner is now used to check passengers. According to Rick Seaney, “Our security ought to stop anything these days, stringent as it is: We've gone from the metal detectors of the 1970s to post-9/11 body scans and enhanced pat downs. Cockpit doors are now fortified, and the sky
The U.S. suffered a very terrible blow September 11, 2001 when a terrorist group named Al-Qaeda hit our country with a series of terrorist attacks in New York and VA which claimed the lives of more than 3000 people, and left us speechless, hurt, without many loved ones and puzzled on how it happened. Before that there had been several attacks such as the attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City in 1993 and of the Federal building in Oklahoma two years later known as the Murrah Building ( Kano, Wood, M., Bourque, L. On the 11th of September, 2001, America was under attack. 19 men hijacked four domestic American passenger planes, with the intention of crashing them into several iconic American landmarks. Two of the planes crashed into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center, reducing them to rubble. A third plane crashed into the Pentagon, and the fourth plane, en route to Washington D.C, crashed into a field in Pennsylvania after the passengers attempted to overthrow the hijackers. Almost 3000 people died that day as a result of the attacks. September 11th is a day permanently ingrained into the minds of millions of Americans and one of the, if not the largest scar on the face of modern American history. Suspicions arose only a few days after the attack regarding who was responsible and blame quickly fell on the jihadist terrorist group known as Al-Qaeda, primarily based in Afghanistan.
The attack on the World Trade Center was not the first attack and was not the first time the US Intelligence Community had heard of Al-Qaeda or Osama Bin Laden. The role of counterintelligence from both sides the US and Al-Qaeda, lent to the information flow not only form the attackers but also to the ones who would ultimately respond. The FBI, the CIA, the DIA, have integral parts in these series of events from the information collection to the information flow. In a time where it was realized that Counterintelligence and Counterterrorism have a similar need, as well as information sharing across agencies, have led to the CI and IC we see today.
