The Age of Artificial Intelligence
“Intelligence is described as the ability to adapt to new environments and situations and being able to understand consequences and effects that your actions cause. This is something that all living creatures have in some way or another. Animals can adapt to their environments and react to interference, and plants do the same. Human intelligence, however, is in an entirely different ball park. With the uprise of technology and advancements constantly being made, it has now come time to question the use of artificial intelligence. Artificial intelligence, or AI, means giving non living things, such as computers and robots, the ability to think for themselves to an extent” (Pros and Cons of Artificial Intelligence - HRFnd 1). The advances seen in the past few years—cars that drive themselves, useful humanoid robots, speech recognition, and 3D printers are all made possible by artificial intelligence. While some may believe that artificial intelligence is a threat to society as it may cause unemployment, it is a much more positive element in the world because AI can be used to advance healthcare, industry, and transportation.
To begin, a lot of artificial intelligence is now being implemented in healthcare. One of the most well-know examples of AI is IBM Watson. IBM Watson is a cognitive computing system. Watson is largely known for being a champion Jeopardy contestant, but many people do
Artificial Intelligence is the taking over of machines to do tasks that would normally require a human to do. The idea of artificial intelligence has been around for years, appearing in movies and television shows to show what the future might bring. Artificial intelligence is becoming closer to a reality and now society must question if it should have a role in society. Artificial intelligence has many flaws at the moment making it impractical for use until society can address the issues facing it like the loss of jobs and how to control the use of AI.
When someone brings up the term “artificial intelligence”, a variety of connotations tend to arise, connotations that often are unfair or unrepresentative of the true real-world applications of such a term. Due to the incidentally fear-mongering nature of the media, artificial intelligence can refer to something as basic as a robotic arm in a factory, as well as the implied extinction and/or enslavement of the human race as caused by robo-revolution. As of today, however, when applied in the world of modern technology, artificial intelligence is defined as any innovation that performs a task usually completed by humans. Of course, with this definition, artificial intelligence holds the potential for both societal harm and benefit, and its fate
What is Artificial Intelligence or AI? Why people are so concerned about its impact on the human job market and what is the hype about AI? To describe AI in basic terms, it is a branch of Computer Science which is concerned with the study and creation of computer systems. AI refers to “machines that respond to simulation consistent with traditional responses from humans, given the human capacity for contemplation, judgment and intention. It
Recently technology has become a significant part of society, specifically for the medical field. People in the past have expressed concerns about the security and safety of implementing artificial intelligence (AI) into the medical field. Artificial intelligence is a computer system with human capabilities, such as decision making. Research has shown that AI could increase the efficiency and quality of patient care in the medical field. AI could greatly improve efficiency by using software that can analyze all of the symptoms the patient has and the patient’s family history in a shorter period of time than a human doctor could. For the time period from 2000 to 2010 the conversation about artificial intelligence was focused on the ethical
The author acknowledges the possible skepticism he might receive with the article, and the possibility of being called a “luddite”. He admits that adjusting to new technology is unnerving, however, it is leading towards the advancement of society. As technology advances, artificial intelligence such as robots, cyborgs, Iron
What the author finds truly disturbing, however, is the threat of our brains being replaced by artificial intelligence. As the creators of Google admitted, their ultimate goal is to give people access to all the information available on the Internet by connecting their brains to artificial intelligence system. For Carr, such ambition suggest that intelligence can be boiled down to a mechanical process that will leave no place for critical thinking, creativity and personal reflection.
What’s the first thing you think of when someone says, “Artificial Intelligence”? The Terminator? Perhaps the Matrix trilogy? Ever since the inception of the computer, science fiction has brought us scenes of super-intelligent computers who want to take over all of mankind. In reality, Artificial Intelligence is still in it’s infancy, and has done much more good for humans than bad. Over time, people’s perspective of AI has changed drastically. We have gone from thinking that AI will take over the world and obliterate mankind to thinking about all the benefits we can get from AI. The change in people’s perspective lately towards a more positive view of AI has boosted the production, sales, and advancement of home automation and AI, making
For those who do not know, artificial intelligence is exactly what is called, an "intelligence" through a computer that is artificially created by humans. A.I. is defined to be able to learn and use the information it learns to produce "thoughts" of its own, almost as if it were a thinking human. Though many may believe A.I. is just a robot which is able to speak and understand humans, it is much more than that. A.I. technologies are being implemented in smartphones, homes, cars, watches, headphones, and is also being developed to work in many more ways that help give humanity an easier life.
One of the biggest controversies with the advancement of artificial intelligence is the debate on job automation. Many people believe that artificial intelligence will advance to become better than humans and replace humans in most jobs. The opposite belief is that AI will be used to improve the standard of living and will be a tool to support humans, not replace them. Job automation has many benefits such as performing more dangerous jobs and complete tasks that humans do not desire to do. Even though job automation has benefits, there are many people who believe robots will take over the job market and the unemployment rate will skyrocket. There are multiple supporting factors for each side of the job automation debate, but the argument will never be settled until AI is further advanced and utilized.
Artificial intelligence is the development of a computer system that is able to perform tasks of human intelligence like visual perception, speech recognition, and decision-making. Computer scientists have made a substantial advancement in the
Throughout its history, artificial intelligence has always been a topic with much controversy. Should human intelligence be mimicked? If so, are there ethical bounds on what computers should be programmed to do? These are a couple of question that surround the artificial intelligence controversy. This paper will discuss the pros and cons of artificial intelligence so that you will be able to make an educated decision on the issue.
AI is a developing field of study that attempts to recreate human intelligence through the use of a computer. The most famous demonstration of AI was the IBM created Watson who beat all the top Jeopardy players in the country. The benefits of exploring AI in health care is the ability for the computer to assimilated data quickly, and provided feedback to the end-user that is evidenced-based (Bottles, 2012). AI could be used to gather data about a patient’s symptoms and suggest both nursing and medical care. For example, an alert for the early detection of sepsis and systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) has been proven to save lives since the detection of early sepsis and SIRS is so subtle (Amland & Hahn-Cover, 2014). At my organization, the sepsis and SIRS alert is used, using a programed decision support system (DDS) that crawls the EHR for documented data and values that suggest early signs of SIRS and sepsis. Using clinical criteria for the early detection of SIRS and sepsis, when 3 of 5 criteria are met, an alert is triggered. This alerts both the nurse and the rapid response team. From a personal perspective, the use of AI in health care is a bit sci-fi and scary. However, I do see the potential. Even with the amass of new technology, nurses and other health care providers still need to critically think. A computer or AI does not negate the need for the acquisition of knowledge or critical
Machines with AI could be used in medical facilities to diagnose illnesses or to search for symptoms or the presence of anomalies in the bodies of patients (Keiser, 2017). Doctors constantly lament the delays in diagnosing diseases in a developing country. The use Artificial
Artificial Intelligence is a topic within the public media that has existed for decades, but is now a concern due to the reality of human advancement and innovation in the field of science and technology. Many people believe that computers will become self-aware or sentient and view humanity as a disposable resource and gain supremacy. Reasoning that research on the technology should halt and not become more advance. Whereas others believe they will help catapult research and the economy forward, supporting the operations and innovations the technology offers. The complicated and divided solutions to the debate aren’t obvious, but there are more benefits to improving artificial intelligence than there is stopping it. Therefore, the negative effects people believe will occur can be resolved.
Most experts agree that Artificial Intelligence is on the increase in various fields. It has become one of the most controversial scientific issues of the twenty-first century. It raises the unemployment rate, workers will not find enough jobs for them and some of them may lose their work. As a result of technology, according to Wilson, Daugherty and Bianzino (2017), "The threat that automation will eliminate a broad swath of jobs across the world economy is now well established. As Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems become ever more
